Late reconstruction of orbital and naso-orbital deformities.

Acute orbital fractures and naso-orbital ethmoid fractures can result in chronic orbital and naso-orbital deformities. Understanding the acute injury is the first step in reconstructing the established late deformity. The best management strategy for reconstruction of orbital hypertelorism is to avoid late complications by repairing these deformities early near the time of the original fractures. New technologies from computer-guided surgical planning and additive manufacturing technology produce passive fitting implants tailored for patient-specific needs.

Congenital orbital encephalocele, orbital dystopia, and exophthalmos.

We present here an exceedingly rare variant of a nonmidline basal encephalocele of the spheno-orbital type, and this was accompanied with orbital dystopia in a 56-year-old man. On examination, his left eye was located more inferolaterally than his right eye, and the patient said this had been this way since his birth. The protrusion of his left eye was aggravated when he is tired. His naked visual acuity was 0.7/0.3, and the ocular pressure was 14/12 mm Hg. The exophthalmometry was 10/14 to 16 mm. His eyeball motion was not restricted, yet diplopia was present in all directions. The distance f…

Palliative orbital decompression for metastatic melanoma to the orbit.

Although relatively rare, metastatic carcinomas to the orbit are the second most common orbital neoplasm in the adult. There are only ten cases reported in the literature of cutaneous melanoma metastatic to the orbit and, of these, only two had disease involving both orbits. This paper presents the third case of bilateral orbital melanoma; however, in this case, the primary site was the uveal tract in the first eye, with contralateral involvement being a metastasis of the orbital primary. The patient developed severe unilateral proptosis in his only seeing eye with progressive loss of vision. …

[Orbital diameter, inner and outer orbital distance. A growth model of fetal orbital measurements].

AIM: Aim of this study was to establish a growth model for the intrauterine growth of the following fetal parameters: orbital diameter, interorbital and biocular diameters. METHOD: Data were measured in a prospective cross-sectional study with real-time ultrasound. The study group consisted of 1090 healthy fetuses between 12 and 41 weeks gestation. For curve standardisation a growth model for all parameters was used. RESULTS: Using this growth model growth profiles (5., 50., and 95. percentiles) were established. All orbital parameters showed a nonlinear growth. CONCLUSION: Since ocular and…

Outcomes in Orbit-Sparing Versus Orbit-Sacrificing Surgery for Sinonasal Malignancies With Orbital Involvement: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal malignancies with orbital involvement may be managed with orbit-sacrificing or orbit-preserving surgical approaches, with a recent shift towards orbital preservation to reduce postoperative morbidity while maintaining oncological success. The current clinical data on the most optimal approach for managing such locally advanced tumours remains inconclusive. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and SCOPUS were searched from inception to 12 June 2024 for longitudinal studies investigating oncological and functional outcomes in sinonasal malignancies with orbital involvement managed wit…

Orbital Roof Decompression and Transposition of Orbital Contents for Treatment of Orbital Deviation Associated With Fibrous Dysplasia.

A 25-year-old male was admitted to our institute complaining of caudal deviation of orbit. Surgery was performed through a coronal incision, a subtarsal incision, and a lynch incision. The periosteum of the orbital roof was raised, and the supraorbital wall was shaved cephalad in reference to the nonaffected side. Then the periosteum was incised from the inferior margin of the orbit to the medial and lateral palpebral ligaments, and the periosteum of the orbital floor was raised until the inferior orbital fissure. After the circumferential intraorbital periosteal detachment, the orbital conten…

Multi-Layer Low Earth Orbit Constellation Capacity Fundamental.

Multi-layer low Earth orbit constellations (ML-LEOs) have become a pivotal trend in the development of satellite network systems, where their layered orbital architecture improves system performance by strategically deploying satellites in distinct orbital layers. However, two critical issues remain open: how does the configuration of ML-LEO affect its performance, and how many layers are required to achieve optimal performance? This paper first investigates the impact of the number of layers L on the capacity of ML-LEOs. By analyzing the distribution of inter-layer inter-satellite links (ISLs…

Chirality-Induced Spin-Orbit Coupling and Spin Selectivity.

We show that a spinor traveling along a one-dimensional helical path develops a spin-orbit coupling as a result of the curvature of the path. We estimate the magnitude of the associated spin polarization and obtain values typical of many helical molecular structures that showcase the Chirality-induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) effect. We find that this chirality-induced spin-orbit coupling (χ-SOC), in conjunction with broken time-reversal symmetry, may be an important ingredient for the microscopic underpinning of the CISS phenomenon.
