The long-term administration of vancomycin has increased; however, the pulmonary adverse reactions of long-term vancomycin treatment remain under-studied. A 75-year-old male patient with vertebral osteomyelitis receiving long-term vancomycin therapy developed a fever. High resolution computed tomography showed irregular ground glass opacity and consolidation in the right upper lung. The patient developed organizing pneumonia. To investigate the effect of Cu deficiency on the distribution of metals in organs when Cd was administered, 8-week-old female rats of the SD strain were fed a Cu-deficient diet (0.5 ppm Cu) or a basal diet (3.5 ppm Cu) and given 50 oral doses of 200 micrograms/rat of Cd. Then, the concentrations of Cd, Zn, Cu, Fe, Ca, Mn and Mg in each tissue were determined. The role of the L-arginine-nitric oxide pathway in the pathogenesis of colonic inflammation was assessed using L-arginine and its competitive analogue N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) in a rat model of colitis. In the first study oral L-arginine 2 per cent (control: 3.4 per cent L-glycine) was administered with and without L-NAME 100 mg/l.
