An unusual case of compound odontome associated with maxillary impacted central incisor.

Odontomas are the most common type of odontogenic tumor occurring within the jaws and are frequently associated with the retained deciduous teeth interfering with the eruption of permanent teeth. Compound odontomas are usually diagnosed in the anterior portion of the jaws and resemble tooth-like structure. These are usually asymptomatic. Complex odontomas are normally diagnosed in the posterior part of the jaws and consist of a disorganized mass with no morphologic resemblance to a tooth. The present case report of a 16-year-old female is a typical case of compound odontoma in the maxillary an

Dilemmas in Treatment of Recurrent Recalcitrant Dental Anterior Open Bite.

An anterior open bite is one of the most difficult occlusal abnormalities to treat. Quite often this aberration entails dental component and/or skeletal component. The skeletal open bite will require intrusion of the posterior sextants with the assistance of bite blocks, temporary anchorage devices, high pull headgear, and as a last resort - orthognathic surgery. The orthodontic treatment should be augmented with the orofacial myofunctional therapy. In this article, the author describes 3 different variations of treatment of the dental anterior open bite, first on acrylic models, and then on t

An unusual case of invasive cervical resorption after piezosurgery-assisted en masse retraction.

A 16-year-old patient sought orthodontic correction for profile improvement and labially inclined maxillary incisors. She had Class II malocclusion, protrusive maxillary and mandibular incisors, and increased overjet and overbite with an American Board of Orthodontics discrepancy index value of 25. She was treated with maxillary premolar extractions and miniscrew-supported en masse retraction assisted with piezoincisions. Extraction spaces (7.5 mm per side) were closed with maximum anchorage in 10 months. Total treatment time was 23 months. Twenty-seven months after debonding, a pink spot was

Orthodontic treatment of a patient with unerupted maxillary central and lateral incisors and canine: a case report.

AIM: The aim of this case report was to describe the orthodontic and periodontal management of a patient with three impacted anterior teeth. METHODS: An 18-year-old female with Class I crowding on a Class I skeletal base presented with the chief complaint of an unaesthetic smile. Clinical examination revealed an impacted upper right permanent canine (13), lateral (12) and central incisor (11), a retained deciduous incisor and moderate crowding in the lower arch. The impacted teeth were surgically exposed (closed exposure) and aligned with fixed appliances. The 12 was extracted due to root res

Multiple congenitally missing teeth treated with autotransplantation and orthodontics.

Treatment of children with several congenitally missing teeth is challenging, because growth and development of the oral structures must be considered. The treatment options include retaining the deciduous teeth and postponing treatment until later or extracting the deciduous teeth and doing one of the following: allowing the space to close spontaneously, closing the space orthodontically, or in patients whose growth is finished, using a prosthetic or implant replacement. One other viable option, if donor teeth are available, is autotransplantation. The treatment plan for patients with missing

Demystifying Maxillomandibular Fibrous Dysplasia and Its Impact on Dental Development.

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia of the jaw (FDJ) is a rare fibroosseous skeletal disorder that affects the maxilla and/or mandible, often resulting in significant dental complications. However, its impact on dentition and occlusion remains poorly characterized. This study aims to analyze the dental and orthodontic sequelae of FDJ to enhance clinical management and improve patient care. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients with FDJ seen at the authors' institution from 2015 to 2023. Medical records and computed tomographic imaging were reviewed to assess disease distri

Prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with unilateral complete cleft of the primary and secondary palate.

The goal of this paper was to present the orthodontic treatment of a patient with unilateral lip, alveolar and hard palate cleft (UCLP) and the agenesis of permanent teeth and prosthetic rehabilitation of two cases differing from each other in the extent of tissue deficiency. Both patients underwent a long, multi-specialist surgico-orthodontic treatment including derotation of the maxilla's smaller segment and restoration of space for the missing teeth. In the first case presented, cross-bite on the front teeth and the canine was eliminated during a late phase of orthodontic treatment in order

Distalization of maxillary molars using a lever arm and mini-implant.

This article describes the orthodontic treatment of a young woman with a Class II malocclusion and maxillomandibular prognathism. One orthodontic mini- implant was placed in the posterior area of the palate to provide anchorage for?a transpalatal arch. The force for molar distalization was applied using an elastic chain from the lever arm inserted on the transpalatal arch to the mini-implant. Two sliding jigs were applied buccally as a complement for Class II malocclusion correction. This system created an efficient mechanotherapy for maxillary molar distalization. The active treatment period

Skeletal alterations associated with the use of bonded rapid maxillary expansion appliance.

Bonded maxillary expansion appliances have been suggested to control increases in the vertical dimension of the face after rapid maxillary expansion (RME). However, there is still no consensus in the literature about its real skeletal effects. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate, longitudinally, the vertical and sagittal cephalometric alterations after RME performed with bonded maxillary expansion appliance. The sample consisted of 26 children, with a mean age of 8.7 years (range: 6.9-10.9 years), with posterior skeletal crossbite and indication for RME. After maxillary expan

Orthodontic space closure of lost traumatized anterior teeth - case report.

This case report refers to an 11-year-old boy with avulsion of the upper left central and lateral incisors. The teeth were replanted after 4 h, splinted with a semi-rigid splint for 12 days, and then endodontically treated. Severe progressive root resorption was seen after 2 years and the teeth were extracted. The boy had a normal occlusion with spacing in both jaws and slight protrusion of the anterior teeth. The treatment objectives were to close some of the spaces by mesial movement of the buccal segments in the upper jaw to minimize bone loss for a future single osseointegrated implant. Fi

Hypodontia, ankylosis and infraocclusion: report of a case restored with a fibre-reinforced ceromeric bridge.

Retained primary molars without permanent successors often undergo progressive infra-occlusion, without predictable exfoliation. Early prophylactic removal, after assessment of root resorption and adjacent periodontal support loss as well as age of onset, is often indicated. This article describes the joint orthodontic-restorative care of such a case and describes an alternative method of restoration using a fibre-reinforced ceromeric bridge. As well as a conservative preparation and good aesthetics, an overlay restoration provided a fully functional occlusion.

An overview of the intraoral features and craniofacial morphology of growing and adult Japanese cleidocranial dysplasia subjects.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment for cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) requires an understanding of the nature of the retained deciduous teeth, supernumerary teeth, delayed eruption of the permanent teeth, and craniofacial morphology from childhood to adulthood. This study aimed to provide an overview of the intraoral and craniofacial characteristics of growing and adult Japanese CCD subjects. METHODS: We assessed cross-sectionally the intraoral features of 28 CCD subjects (males, 15.3 ± 7.0 years; females, 15.2 ± 5.1 years) using orthopantomograms and photographs. Mean facial diagrams (profilog
