Orthognathic Surgery and Orthodontics: Inadequate Planning Leading to Complications or Unfavorable Results.

Complications in orthognathic surgery are commonly a result of inadequate preoperative planning and communication between the surgeon and orthodontist. Unfavorable outcomes can often be avoided when overall treatment goals along with a surgical and orthodontic plan are developed and agreed upon by the orthodontist, surgeon, and patient before the start of active tooth movement or any surgical procedures. Continuous evaluation of the patient's progress throughout treatment and subsequent communication between the surgeon and orthodontist are recommended to prevent frequent errors, such as inade

Prospective clinical study of transverse development with orthodontics with self-ligating brackets.

Orthodontics with low friction, low force, passive self-ligating brackets produces alveolar-dental remodeling, resulting in an increase in the transverse diameter of the dental arches, especially in the premolar sector. The aim of this study was to compare the modifications of the transverse diameter in the pre- and post-dental alignment cast models with orthodontics with passive self-ligating brackets in patients with moderate to severe dental discrepancy. The study included 28 patients of both sexes aged 16 to 48 years with dental discrepancies between -6 and -16 mm, treated with self-ligati…

Treatment decision in adult patients with class III malocclusion: surgery versus orthodontics.

BACKGROUND: One of the most controversial issues in treatment planning of class III malocclusion patients is the choice between orthodontic camouflage and orthognathic surgery. Our aim was to delineate diagnostic measures in borderline class III cases for choosing proper treatment. METHODS: The pretreatment lateral cephalograms of 65 patients exhibiting moderate skeletal class III were analyzed. The camouflage group comprised of 36 patients with the mean age of 23.5 (SD 4.8), and the surgery group comprised of 29 patients with the mean age of 24.8 years (SD 3.1). The camouflage treatment cons

Orthodontics in Children and Impact of Malocclusion on Adolescents' Quality of Life.

Orthodontics is the dental specialty concerned with the position of teeth and the relationship between the maxilla and mandible. Much evidence regarding the characteristics of normal occlusion during childhood/adolescence, the timely referral of children/adolescents to orthodontic treatment, and the impact of orthodontic outcomes on individuals' physical, functioning, and psychosocial well-being exists in the literature. This body of evidence may be helpful for pediatricians and primary care physicians. For those willing to be skilled providers of health care to children/adolescents, knowledge…

Malocclusion as a Cause for Temporomandibular Disorders and Orthodontics as a Treatment.

This article explores the long-standing controversy between orthodontics and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). It reviews the history of this controversy and presents a discussion of the current literature concerning the potential role of malocclusion in the onset of TMDs. It also explores the potential role of orthodontic treatment as a possible cure for TMDs and concludes, based on the most current evidence-based literature, that there is no relationship.

Adult patient with hemifacial microsomia treated with combined orthodontics and distraction osteogenesis.

Distraction osteogenesis is an alternative treatment option for patients with facial asymmetry and mandibular hypoplasia. New bone is formed between bone segment surfaces that are gradually separated by incremental traction. The purpose of this article is to report the treatment of a 22-year-old man with hemifacial microsomia, facial asymmetry, and a skeletal Class II profile. The patient's left mandibular ramus was lengthened with distraction osteogenesis, and miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion was used to correct the maxillary transverse deficiency. Postoperative orthodontic treatmen

Undesirable dental hard tissue effects hypothetically linked to orthodontics - a microscopic study.

Like any other medical intervention, the orthodontic treatment may have, besides the positive effects, also unwanted secondary consequences. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes present in dental hard tissue associated with orthodontic treatment. The stereo-microscopic ex vivo analysis was performed on two sets of maxillary first premolars undergoing orthodontic treatment for a long period of time (12 and 23 months); five teeth with other clinical situations were used as controls. By analyzing the teeth undergoing orthodontics, enamel color alterations were mainly found adjacent t…

Use of laser technology in orthodontics: hard and soft tissue laser treatments.

AIM: Modern technology has perfected a new instrument that has become almost indispensable in modern dentistry, in accordance with the philosophy of minimally invasive therapy: the laser. The aim of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness and efficacy of laser technology to solve mucogingival problems associated with orthodontic treatment. Some laser wavelengths work both on hard and soft tissues (2780 nm, 2940 nm), other lasers, such as the 810 nm diode, have a very good surgical and haemostatic action on soft tissues and an important analgesic and biostimulating effect that can help the h

[Preparation of an implant site using orthodontics. Presentation of a clinical case].

Orthodontic movement of soft and hard tissues can facilitate the placement of a dental implant. A missing lower incisor is one of many situations where orthodontic management of the edentulous space prior to surgery can improve implant insertion. Multidisciplinary treatment must be carefully planned before tooth movement is begun in order to ensure the best possible aesthetic and functional outcomes.

Lingual orthodontics and forced eruption: a means for osseous and tissue regeneration.

An hopeless upper central incisor was subjected to forced eruption in order to improve and develop the implant site by distraction of the periodontal ligament-alveolar bone complex. The orthodontic extrusion was carried out with two aesthetic approaches: lingual orthodontics and a composite resin 2-2 veneer pontic. The first part of the extrusion was realized with lingual orthodontics alone, then, when the crown had been remodelled in its greatest part and the aesthetics was no more acceptable to the patient a composite resin 2-2 veneer pontic was bonded to the vestibular side of the other thr…
