OBJECTIVE: Narrow maxilla occurring due to various congenital or acquired causes creates major orthodontic problems and complicates prosthetic dental rehabilitation. The etiologic factors are mostly related to upper airway pathologies that restrict breathing and cause negative pressure at the base of the nose and nasopharynx. The upper and lower airway is a whole unit. Regional anomalies or acquired problems affect the entire system. This can lead to developmental issues and permanent disorders in childhood, which will last their real life. This study was planned to investigate the incidence o

INTRODUCTION: American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association (ACPA) teams consist of trained professionals collaborating in an interdisciplinary approach to optimize outcomes for patients with cleft palate. Orthodontic care is essential to correct dental malocclusion, guide maxillary growth, enhance surgical outcomes, and improve oral function and aesthetics. Although ACPA approval requires an orthodontist in the multidisciplinary team, the methods of delivering orthodontic care remain unclear. This project aims to elucidate how orthodontic care is integrated into ACPA teams.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion is a prevalent oral health concern worldwide, ranking third after dental caries and periodontal disease. Early identification and intervention in childhood can prevent its progression into adulthood. The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) is widely used to assess malocclusion severity. However, global studies using the IOTN have reported varying malocclusion prevalence rates, which are influenced by socioeconomic and ethnic factors. This study aimed to examine the orthodontic treatment needs among Iraqi children aged 10-12.
METHODS: A total of 384 children (17

Plasma levels of protein analytes might be markers to predict and monitor the kinetics of bone and tissue remodeling, including maximization of orthodontic treatment stability. They could help predict/prevent and/or diagnose possible adverse effects such as bone dehiscences, gingival recession, or root resorption. The objective of this study was to measure plasma levels of markers of bone turnover and inflammation during orthodontic force application in a rat model of orthodontic expansion. Two different orthodontic forces for bilateral buccal expansion of the maxillary arches around second an

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a common condition. Studies of TMD in relation to orthodontic treatment did not show an association, but longitudinal studies from adolescence to adulthood are lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between orthodontic treatment and TMD with a longitudinal study design.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted in South Wales, United Kingdom. The baseline investigation was carried out in 1981 and involved children aged 11 to 12 years (n = 1018). Follow-up investigations were done in 1984 (n = 792), 1989 (

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) relate to discomfort of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The disorder is multifactorial with a degree of psychogenic influence varying throughout an individual's life with phases of symptoms affecting the quality of life. In an attempt to treat this complex group of disorders many treatment modalities have been identified some of which are also considered in other Cochrane reviews. The disorder also has a normal cycle of events appearing to spontaneously improve without treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Tertiary crowding is common after orthodontic treatment. The role of third molars in their development remains a subject of controversy. We aim to evaluate whether third molar removal affects long-term anterior alignment after orthodontic treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Manual searches reference lists of included studies, selected orthodontic journals, and recent reviews. Included studies specifically addressed the following PICOT question: PICOT: In patients who do not wear retention devices

BACKGROUND: Eruption failure in the mixed dentition presents many challenges, but eruption disorders in a child patient offer solutions that are not possible in adult patients. The opportunity to remedy the occlusal outcomes for eruption problems in the mixed dentition depends on the type of problem; we consider three major categories of eruption problems and corresponding management strategies. The distinction between a mechanical failure of eruption (MFE), ankylosis of a single tooth, or Primary Failure of Eruption (PFE) due to a genetic defect that alters dental eruption is key to the poten

BACKGROUND: Diabetes, occasionally diagnosed in orthodontic patients, can impede orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) by accumulating advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in the periodontium. This accumulation impairs the osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) due to alterations in the force-loaded microenvironment, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive.
METHODS: Bioinformatics analysis of GSE112122 identified alterations in the mechanical regulation of histone methylation enzyme Lysine Demethylase 6B (KDM6B). OTM models were established in healthy and Nic

Adult patients with a Class II skeletal base are often treated by a combined orthodontic and surgical approach. Advancement of the mandible, most often including a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO), is preceded by orthodontic alignment and frequently the curve of Spee is levelled. When the chin is prominent, there is a risk of accentuating this as a result of surgery. An option to prevent this is to maintain a deep curve of Spee before surgical advancement. This will result in an opening rotation of the mandible during surgery and thus, a less prominent chin. The aim of this study was

In this review, typical clinical complications involving periodontal tissues are illustrated that can be encountered in conjunction with orthodontic therapy (OT). Special considerations are given for various clinical scenarios, such as the patient presenting in periodontal health, with periodontitis, or with mucogingival conditions. While some of the complications are seen as common side effects of OT, other, more severe, problems that could have been avoided may be viewed as treatment errors. Recommendations are made on how to prevent these complications, based on the currently available evid

A tooth normally erupts when half to three-quarters of its final root length has developed. Tooth impaction is usually diagnosed well after this period and is generally asymptomatic. It is principally for this reason that patients seek treatment later than optimal. Tooth impaction is a common problem in daily orthodontic practice and, in most cases, it is recognized by chance in a routine dental examination. Therefore, it is very important that dental practitioners are aware of this condition, since early detection and intervention may help to prevent many harmful complications. The treatment

Orthodontic treatment is planned on an individual, case-by-case basis after thoroughly considering the patient's overall facial and dental characteristics, the expected duration of treatment, costs, patient preferences, and the orthodontist's experience. This article reports the treatment of a patient with a maxillary premolar-molar transposition in the permanent dentition that was successfully managed with orthodontic treatment. A girl, aged 10 years 2 months, came for treatment with an ectopic maxillary left premolar. Radiographic analysis indicated a developing complete transposition of the

The cases presented in this paper share a common skeletal characteristic, hyperdivergence, a common therapeutic strategy, similar diagnostic elements, and a common choice of non-symmetrical extractions. Interceptive treatment is especially useful for this type of malocclusion to prevent deep over-bites, atypical habits, and severe malocclusion. In the Tweed-Merrifeld technique, orthodontists use careful dental, occlusal, cephalometric, and esthetic evaluations to establish an appropriate treatment plan and therapeutic strategy whose goal will be: to eliminate unhealthy compensations, re-positi

This study reviewed 199 cleft palate repairs resulting in 22 percent fistula formation. Of these, 49 percent were judged to be symptomatic. Of 44 fistulas, 21 required treatment, of which 14 had conventional type surgical closure with an overall success rate of 35 percent. Good surgical technique and good surgical judgment were felt to be important factors both in preventing postoperative fistula and in the success of their repair. Conventional methods of surgical repair of hard palate fistulas were seen to result in a very poor success rate. Orthodontic movement of maxillary segments was seen
