[Heterotopic ossifications after hospitalisation in intensive care for SARS-CoV-2 pneumopathy].

We report the case of a 63-year old patient admitted in the intensive care unit for 25 days because of a severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. With diverse symptoms of critical illness polyneuropathy the patient has been taken care of in a rehabilitation centre. Ankylosis and joint motion limitation led to a more extensive imaging assessment. The later showed advanced periarticular heterotopic calcification in both hips and in right shoulder. Although hypothesis about this complication's physiopathology remains unclear, early identification would allow a better management. It is the first time heteroto

Comment to: The utility of ultrasound examination in cubital tunnel syndrome caused by heterotopic ossification.

Ultrasound (US) could visualize the pathological anatomy of HO and the enlargement site and compression location of the nerve in the cubital tunnel [1]. We read with great interest the article of Jačisko et al[2]. In addition, we report rare US images of HO in direct contact with the swollen ulnar nerve in the cubital tunnel that was not detected by plain radiography. A 60-year-old female presented with a six-month history of elbow pain. Her pain was located at the medial side of the right elbow joint and accompanied by numbness of the fifth finger. She had a history of excessive manual labor

Goblet Cell Adenocarcinoma With Heterotopic Ossification: A Rare Case Report and Review of Literature.

Heterotopic bone formation is a rare phenomenon when associated with gastrointestinal neoplasms. Here we present a rare case of heterotopic ossification associated with goblet cell adenocarcinoma of the appendix, and a literature review of such cases associated with neoplasms within and out of the gastrointestinal tracts. We reviewed the clinical data and when available, immunohistochemical markers of osteoblastic differentiation. Our review shows similar findings to prior reports of apparent high association of heterotopic bone formation with neoplasms with mucinous features. Two, previously

The pathogenesis of heterotopic ossification after traumatic brain injury. A review of current literature.

Neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO), mostly defined as a benign process of formation of bone outside the skeletal system, after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a musculoskeletal disorder that causes pain and reduces the range of motion, often leading to marked impairment of quality of life. The pathogenic factors that link the brain and bone and cause the formation of heterotopic bone are largely unknown. This article will try to summarize the current literature on the pathogenesis of NHO and accelerated fracture healing after TBI. The heterotopic formation of bone after TBI seems to be

Neurogenic Heterotopic Ossifications Develop Independently of Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor and Neutrophils.

Neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHOs) are incapacitating heterotopic bones in periarticular muscles that frequently develop following traumatic brain or spinal cord injuries (SCI). Using our unique model of SCI-induced NHO, we have previously established that mononucleated phagocytes infiltrating injured muscles are required to trigger NHO via the persistent release of the pro-inflammatory cytokine oncostatin M (OSM). Because neutrophils are also a major source of OSM, we investigated whether neutrophils also play a role in NHO development after SCI. We now show that surgery transiently

Evaluation of Salivary Cytokines for Diagnosis of both Trauma-Induced and Genetic Heterotopic Ossification.

PURPOSE: Heterotopic ossification (HO) occurs in the setting of persistent systemic inflammation. The identification of reliable biomarkers can serve as an early diagnostic tool for HO, especially given the current lack of effective treatment strategies. Although serum biomarkers have great utility, they can be inappropriate or ineffective in traumatic acute injuries and in patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). Therefore, the goal of this study is to profile the cytokines associated with HO using a different non-invasive source of biomarkers. METHODS: Serum and saliva wer

Prevention of heterotopic ossification: an experimental study using a plasma expander in a murine model.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a frequent complication following orthopedic and trauma surgery. It often leads to substantial morbidity as many affected patients suffer from pain and joint contractures. Current prophylactic measures include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) and local radiation. However, several disadvantages such as delayed fracture healing and impaired ossification have been reported. For this reason, a novel approach for prevention of HO was searched for. We hypothesized that systemic administration of hydroxyethyl starch (HES), a substance known to

Influence of transcutaneous electrical stimulation on heterotopic ossification: an experimental study in Wistar rats.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a metaplastic biological process in which there is newly formed bone in soft tissues, resulting in joint mobility deficit and pain. Different treatment modalities have been tried to prevent HO development, but there is no consensus on a therapeutic approach. Since electrical stimulation is a widely used resource in physiotherapy practice to stimulate joint mobility, with analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, its usefulness for HO treatment was investigated. We aimed to identify the influence of electrical stimulation on induced HO in Wistar rats. Thirty-six

Massive heterotopic ossification around the ankle in a patient with macrodactyly of the foot: a case report.

A 40-year-old man with macrodactyly of the left great toe presented with progressive enlargement of the ipsilateral ankle and increasing pain after minor trauma. Radiographs and computed tomographic scans of the foot and ankle revealed macrodactyly of the great toe and a large heterotopic ossified mass in the anteromedial aspect of the ankle. The large osseous lesion in the ankle was operatively excised. The lesion was easily excised en bloc after releasing the adhesion and histologically diagnosed as normal mature bone with osteoarthritic changes. Massive heterotopic ossification developing a

Comparison of elbow contracture release in elbows with and without heterotopic ossification restricting motion.

We compared 16 patients with post-traumatic heterotopic ossification (HO) restricting elbow motion (but not complete bony ankylosis) after elbow trauma with 21 patients with capsular contracture alone to test the hypothesis that HO is associated with diminished motion after release. Patients with burns or head injury were excluded. The preoperative flexion arc averaged 59 degrees in the HO cohort and 52 degrees in the capsular contracture cohort. The mean flexion arc after the index surgery improved by 54 degrees to a mean arc of 113 degrees in the HO cohort and by 35 degrees to a mean of 87 d

Heterotopic ossification: review of histologic findings and tissue distribution in a 10-year experience.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) within tissues involved by a pathologic process is a well-recognized phenomenon. It is most frequently observed in atherosclerotic plaques, in soft tissue around joints, and in the central nervous system. Less frequently, carcinomas and some benign neoplasms will undergo heterotopic ossification. We performed a retrospective review of our experience with HO over a 10-year period to determine the frequency and tissue site distribution of heterotopic ossification. A computerized review of surgical pathology records of approximately 126,000 reports revealed 85 cases

Extended time to wound closure is associated with increased risk of heterotopic ossification of the elbow.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a well-recognized complication of burn injury that can result in significantly compromised limb function. The etiology and optimal treatment strategy for HO remain elusive. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between delay in elbow wound closure and the development of HO. We performed a case-control study to examine the relationship between delay in wound closure and development of HO. Cases (HO patients) were identified using our patient registry and matched with patients of similar age, burn size, and sex who did not develop HO. Time to

Acquired heterotopic ossification in the settings of cerebral anoxia and alternative therapy: two cases.

Acquired Heterotopic Ossification (HO) has been well described in the literature as a recognized complication following spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury and joint arthroplasty. Commonly, large proximal limb joints are affected. The underlying mechanisms for ectopic bone formation remain poorly elucidated. Post-stroke hemiplegia as a cause of neurogenic HO is rare, and no published reports of HO occurring after anoxic brain injury in adults have been documented. This study reports two unusual cases of acquired HO: (1) Polyarticular HO involving the ankle joint in a 24-year-old Chinese

[Treatment of neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHO) in brain injured patients: review of literature].

This article is a review of the literature about treatment of neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHO) in brain injured patients, from analysis of the main data bases (Medline, Embase, Reedoc). In spite of the hope they arouse in the seventies, biphosphonates, including etidronate, have not demonstrated their efficiency to inhibit NHO in clinical practice. In fact a very early diagnosis, with the scintigraphic overactivity of the joint area and the increase of serum alkaline phosphatases, must lead to begin passive motion and postures, and may contribute to save functional range of motion. The effect of etidronate on late development of heterotopic ossification after spinal cord injury.

Forty patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and heterotopic ossification (HO) were treated with etidronate and followed after therapy to determine the effects of long-term medication on heterotopic bone formation. Eighteen patients had tetraplegia and 22 had paraplegia. Early diagnosis of HO (positive bone scintigraphy and negative radiographic findings of HO) was established by 3-phase bone scintigraphy using 99m technetium-labeled methylene diphosphonate. All patients underwent treatment with etidronate, first with intravenous administration of 300 mg/day for 3 days followed by an oral admi

Utility of radiation in the prevention of heterotopic ossification following repair of traumatic acetabular fracture.

PURPOSE: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common problem following surgical repair of traumatic acetabular fracture (TAF), potentially causing severe pain and decreased range of motion. This report analyzes the role of radiation therapy for prevention of HO in TAF. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The charts of all patients who received RT to the hip following TAF repair between July 1988 and January 1998 were reviewed. Sixty-six patients were identified. RT was given in 5 fractions of 2 Gy in 45 patients, 1 fraction of 8 Gy in 17 patients, and other doses in 4 patients. Treatment fields encompassed

Risk factors for heterotopic ossification in children and adolescents with severe traumatic brain injury.

Previous reports on the incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) in children and adolescents with traumatic brain injury (TBI) have ranged from 3% to 20%. These studies mention HO briefly or address patient cohorts with coma more than three months. We reviewed the medical records of 90 children younger than 19 years old, who were comatose more than 24 hours after TBI. Mean followup was 33.1 months (range = 2 to 128 months). Incidence of HO was 14.4% (n = 13). One to five sites were involved, with hip and knee most frequent, followed by shoulder, elbow, and nonjoint sites. Children with HO we
