Emphysematous Osteomyelitis: A Rare Manifestation of Osteomyelitis in Dogs. Multimodality Diagnostic Imaging and Evaluation of Clinical Progression.

While osteomyelitis is not uncommon in veterinary patients, emphysematous osteomyelitis, characterized by the presence of intramedullary gas, is scarcely reported in both veterinary and human literature. This report documents two cases in young, previously healthy dogs that were presented with clinical signs related to infection/inflammation. Multiple imaging modalities were utilized in the workup of one case, while computed tomography (CT) was used as the sole modality in the second. In both cases, peri-femoral abscessation with intramedullary gas was identified, and positive bacterial cultur…

A rare case of Salmonella Paratyphi C osteomyelitis: A genetic analysis and review of Salmonella osteomyelitis in England.

Salmonella osteomyelitis is rare in patients without sickling hemoglobinopathies. Invasive disease caused by Salmonella Paratyphi C is rarer still with only one case reported in the United Kingdom in the last 15 years. We report a case of relapsing S. Paratyphi C osteomyelitis in a newly diagnosed diabetic patient from Ghana. Our patient was initially treated successfully with surgical debridement followed by 6 weeks of IV ceftriaxone before recrudescence 9 months later. Due to the rarity of S. Paratyphi C and the lack of recent travel, genomic analysis was undertaken to assess possible source…

Epidemiology and Management of Acute Hematogenous Osteomyelitis, Neonatal Osteomyelitis and Spondylodiscitis in a Third Level Paediatric Center.

Acute hematogenous osteomyelitis (AHOM) is a rare pathology in pediatric population. The aim of this study is to analyse the epidemiological data and the management, compared to European Society for Paediatric Infectious Disease (ESPID, European Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases) guidelines 2017 of 216 children with AHOM, divided in three cohorts (neonatal-onset osteomyelitis, those with vertebral involvement and other types of osteomyelitis). We conducted a retrospective single center study, evaluating data from all the children (aged 0-18 years) consecutively admitted to the Meyer Ch…

Management of vertebral osteomyelitis over an eight-year period: The UDIPROVE (UDIne PROtocol on VErtebral osteomyelitis).

OBJECTIVES: Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) is a compelling clinical entity for clinicians because of its insidious and indolent course, which makes diagnosis difficult. METHODS: All patients with a suspected diagnosis of VO were analyzed over an 8-year period (January 2009 to January 2017). The UDIPROVE protocol (UDIne PROtocol on VErtebral osteomyelitis) was applied in all cases. The primary endpoint was the performance of the UDIPROVE protocol to obtain the causal bacteria of infection. RESULTS: During the study period, 133 episodes of confirmed VO were observed. The etiology of infection wa…

[An experimental study on Pseudomonas osteomyelitis with special reference to the production of experimental osteomyelitis in mice (author's transl)].

I) The author has successfully produced a model of experimental osteomyelitis caused by pseudomonas aeruginosa using the following procedure though such a demonstration has been said to be very difficult. After impregnation in a solution containing about 10(5) pseudomonas aeruginosa, 3 mm silk thread of No. 5 was dried under low-pressure atmosphere and then inserted into the metaphysis of right tibia of a mouse. This method can be produced experimental osteomyelitis in 100% of the animals. In the experimental osteomyelitis generated pathologically by this method, inoculated organisms do not tr…

Experimental osteomyelitis induced by repeated administration of soluble immune complexes: consideration of the fundamental pathogenesis of osteomyelitis.

Morphological changes of blood vessel walls including various kinds of capillaries have been induced by administration of soluble immune complexes. After repeated administrations, those experimental animals who survived the phase of initial anaphylactic shock developed osteomyelitis. In this paper, the formative processes of osteomyelitis will be discussed in relation to Aschoff's definition of inflammation. We will emphasize the importance of the capillarization of the sinusoidal endothelia for the formation of osteomyelitis.

Primary Mandibular Tuberculous Osteomyelitis Mimicking Ameloblastoma: A Case Report and Literature Review of Mandibular Tuberculous Osteomyelitis.

Primary tuberculous osteomyelitis involving the mandible represents less than 2% of skeletal locations. In this paper, we report a case of mandibular tuberculosis (TB) detected after histopathological analysis of the surgically resected specimen during surgical management of a suspected case of ameloblastoma. A 14-year-old male patient presented to us with history of right-sided chin swelling. The clinical examination revealed a swelling, involving right body and parasymphysis of mandible, measuring approximately 6 cm in length and 2 cm in width, extending from right lateral incisor till the f…

Tubercular osteomyelitis masquerading as acute dacryoadenitis.

A girl in her second decade of life presented with a painful, progressively increasing S-shaped swelling of the right upper lid, suggestive of acute dacryoadenitis. She had a history of close contact with a tuberculosis (TB) patient. Despite improvement in preseptal cellulitis with broad-spectrum (non-tubercular) systemic antibiotics, a fluctuant swelling persisted. After resolution of preseptal cellulitis, a CT scan revealed possible tubercular osteomyelitis of the lateral orbital wall and a cold abscess in the right orbit. Ultrasonography-guided drainage of the abscess was performed, and the…

[Chronic non-infectious osteomyelitis in children].

Musculoskeletal pain in common and the differential diagnosis is broad. It is important to recognize the harmful and/or treatable pathology, without performing unnecessary diagnostics. Pattern recognition is crucial. One of the differential diagnostic considerations is chronic non-infectious osteomyelitis (CNO). A relatively unknown auto-inflammatory disease. By presenting three cases, we want to draw attention to this condition and contribute to a better recognition of this disease. We emphasize the importance of doing a total body MRI, when CNO is considered.

Diabetic Pedal Osteomyelitis and Its Treatment.

Diabetes is a fast-growing chronic metabolic disorder that is widely associated with foot ulcers. The major challenge among these ulcers is … ected by the invasion of microorganisms extending to the bone and causing an infection called pedal osteomyelitis. This review details the pathophysiology, the biomaterials aiding in the infection cure and regeneration of bone along with their limitations, as well as their future prospects.

Osteomyelitis, Oxidative Stress and Related Biomarkers.

Bone is a very dynamic tissue, subject to continuous renewal to maintain homeostasis through bone remodeling, a process promoted by two cell types: osteoblasts, of mesenchymal derivation, are responsible for the deposition of new material, and osteoclasts, which are hematopoietic cells, responsible for bone resorption. Osteomyelitis (OM) is an invasive infectious process, with several etiological agents, the most common being Staphylococcus aureus, affecting bone or bone marrow, and severely impairing bone homeostasis, resulting in osteolysis. One of the characteristic features of OM is a stro…
