Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) and middle ear barotrauma (MEB) are the two most common complications of clinical hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) treatment. The current grading system, the Teed's Classification, was first described in 1944 with modifications to this system over the years, but none are specific for the evaluation and treatment of patients undergoing clinical HBO2 therapy. Currently, the standard of care is a baseline otoscopic examination performed prior to starting HBO2 therapy. Repeat otoscopy is required for patients having ETD, pain or other symptoms during the compression and/o

Recent experimental studies have shown the suitability of silk fibroin scaffold (SFS) and porcine-derived acellular collagen I/III scaffold (ACS) as onlay graft materials for tympanic membrane perforation repair. The aims of this study were to further characterize and evaluate the in vivo biocompatibility of SFS and ACS compared with commonly used materials such as Gelfoam and paper in a rat model. The scaffolds were implanted in subcutaneous (SC) tissue and middle ear (ME) cavity followed by histological and otoscopic evaluation for up to 26 weeks. Our results revealed that SFS and ACS were w

OBJECTIVE: Otitis media with effusion is a common disease; it is primarily a disease of children. Otitis media with effusion was found as the most common cause of hearing impairment among children. The prevalence varied in different populations. Using otoscopy and tympanometry usually gives a valuable indication of the presence of otitis media with effusion. The aim of this study is to determine the point prevalence of type B tympanogram as a diagnostic and indication of the presence of otitis media with effusion.
METHODS: This study was carried out during the period September 1997 through to

The hearing of 51 female patients with the Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome was examined using otoscopy and standard audiometry. A unilateral or bilateral hearing loss of more than 15 dB Fletcher index was found in 13 of 51 (25.5%). Four of these 13 patients had a hearing loss of less than 20 dB in the worst ear. The remainder had a hearing loss of at least 30 dB in the worst ear. Five of the 13 patients had pure conductive hearing loss; in four of these five, a congenital origin was accepted. Two of the 13 had mixed hearing loss that was a residual symptom from previous otitis media; s

Otospongiosis of the otic capsule is a primary focal disease, which can be reproduced by both conventional multidirectional tomography and computed tomography. The final stage of otospongiosis, otosclerosis has a complete different appearance in radiography. When the otospongiosis focus is located at the oval window a progressive conductive hearing loss will result, which in its final stage will have the character of otosclerosis with fixation of the stapes in the oval window. The radiographic diagnosis with either conventional multidirectional tomography or CT is more or less pathognomonic an

Gout is the most common cause of monoarthritis in men occurring classically in the great toe and the knee. Extra-articular gout manifestations are rare. Only a few cases of head and neck urate crystals deposits have been described in the literature. Precipitations in the middle ear cause conductive hearing loss with common otoscopic anomalies and difficult imaging diagnosis. We report a case of a healthy 58-years-old man with a middle ear urate deposit causing a progressive hearing loss as the very first symptom of gout. The nature of the deposit was unsure on computer tomography (CT) due to a

Spontaneous herniation of the condylar head into the external auditory canal (EAC) through the foramen of Huschke is extremely rare, with approximately 30 cases reported in the international literature. The typical presentation is a constellation of non-specific symptoms including otalgia, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, malocclusion, otorrhea, tinnitus while chewing, and hearing loss. Clinical examination may reveal pain, granulation tissue in the EAC, or the exposed mandibular condyle with the mouth closed. With mouth opening, the tissue or exposed bone retracts anteriorly leaving an oft

Secretory otitis media (SOM) remains a common disease among children. Although its cause is not yet perfectly established, the pathology, often a sequel of acute otitis media (AOM), is mainly characterized by persistent fluid in the middle ear cavity. Twenty-two children with a diagnosis of SOM were treated daily for 90 days with an oral formulation containing the oral probiotic Streptococcus salivarius K12 (Bactoblis(®)). After treatment, the children were evaluated for AOM episodes and subjected to tone audiometry, tympanometry, endonasal endoscopy, otoscopy, and tonsillar examination. Subje

We report a case of middle ear adenoma (neuroendocrine adenoma of the middle ear) protruding into the external ear canal. The patient was a 65-year-old man with hearing alterations and a headache in whom an otoscopy disclosed a sessile, pea-sized, brown-reddish, focally bleeding mass located in the posterior-superior aspect of the right external auditory canal. Histopathologically, there was a neoplasm composed of closely packed, sometimes back-to-back glandular structures formed by small uniform cuboidal or cylindrical cells. Small solid islands were also present. Following the histopathologi

Pulsatile tinnitus is a sound from within the body, mostly of vascular origin, that stimulates the patient's hearing in the same way as an external sound does, generally at the same pace as the pulse. Although not frequent, the diagnosis of its cause is crucial because of its potential severity in some cases. This article describes some of the diagnostic clues for arterial causes (arteriosclerosis, aberrant carotid artery, arteriovenous fistula or malformations, increased vascularization in Paget's disease) and venous causes (benign intracranial hypertension, high jugular bulb). In some cases

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term effect on middle ear and eustachian tube function following the packing of the middle-ear space to prevent cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea at the termination of translabyrinthine vestibular schwannoma removal. This was an observational study of a sample of 14 patients examined between two and five years post-operatively. Photo-otoscopy and tympanometry were performed bilaterally to evaluate appearance and function. All operated middle ears were air-containing although eight out of 14 showed scarring as evidence of operative intervention.

UNLABELLED: Associations of possible risk factors with prevalence of otitis media with effusion (OME) were prospectively studied in a cohort of 250 infants, aged 0-2 years. In order to determine OME, otoscopy and tympanometry were performed at 3-monthly intervals beginning at term date. Eighteen epidemiologically relevant features were inventoried by means of standardized questionnaires. Multivariate analysis controlled for possible confounding factors. Prevalence of OME was most strongly associated with age (P-value < 0.001). Other factors significantly associated with the prevalence of OME (

OM and OME are common disorders of childhood. Middle ear disease is related to anatomic abnormalities, prior episodes of AOM, chronic rhinitis, allergy, age, sex, race, season, perinatal factors, viral infections, and irritant exposure. ET dysfunction plays an important role in OME, as does the presence of bacteria or bacterial products in the middle ear. Viral infection, nasal allergy, previous episodes of OM and primary mucosal disease all may contribute to this chronic disorder. Diagnostic evaluation involves an appropriate personal and environmental history, a physical examination, pneumat
