Lifestyle interventions for youth who are overweight: a meta-analytic review.

OBJECTIVE: Clear evidence suggests that lifestyle interventions can be helpful in the treatment of youth who are overweight, but translational research is needed to address the gap between treatment research and clinical care. DESIGN: This meta-analysis integrated the results of 66 treatment-control comparisons and 59 alternate treatment comparisons evaluating lifestyle interventions for children and adolescents who were overweight. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Between-groups differences in weight-related outcomes and other health-related behaviors at the end of treatment. RESULTS: Lifestyle inte

Stabilization of overweight prevalence in French children between 2000 and 2007.

OBJECTIVE: Over the past several decades, the prevalence of childhood obesity has increased worldwide. In France, the National Nutrition and Health Program (PNNS), implemented in 2001, was aimed at stopping this increase. The purpose of our study was to monitor changes in prevalence of overweight and obesity in 7-9-year-old children in France since the PNNS was set up. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2007 in France based on a comparable protocol used in 2000. Primary schools were randomly selected in 11 out of 26 administrative school districts. In each of these schools, two

Are racial disparities in pancreatic cancer explained by smoking and overweight/obesity?

Between 2001 and 2005, Blacks from the United States experienced a 32% higher pancreatic cancer death rate than Whites. Smoking, diabetes, and family history might explain some of this disparity, but prospective analyses are warranted. From 1984 to 2004, there were 6,243 pancreatic cancer deaths among Blacks (n = 48,525) and Whites (n = 1,011,864) in the Cancer Prevention Study II cohort. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models yielded hazards ratios (HR) for known and suspected risk factors. Population attributable risks were computed and their effect on age-standardized mortality rates

Everyday experiences of life, body and well-being in children with overweight.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Childhood overweight is presented as a complex problem to solve. To elaborate efforts required in striving for normal weight in overweight children healthy signs of life from the child's point of view should be identified and promoted. The aim of the present study is to describe everyday experiences of life, body and well-being in children with overweight. METHOD: A qualitative descriptive design based on lifeworld perspective was used in 16 open-ended interviews with overweight children aged 10-12 years. Child overweight was defined by body mass index (kg/m(2)) for each

The morbidity and mortality associated with overweight and obesity in adulthood: a systematic review.

BackgroundOverweight and obesity are generally thought to elevate morbidity and mortality. New data call this supposed association into question.MethodsThe Cochrane, Pubmed, and other databases were systematically searched for a combination of relevant terms and subject headings. Meta-analyses and cohort studies based on the German population were evaluated for possible associations between overweight/ obesity and adult morbidity and mortality. Case-control and cross-sectional studies were excluded.ResultsA total of 27 meta-analyses and 15 cohort studies were evaluated. The overall mortality o

Weight loss to treat urinary incontinence in overweight and obese women.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is an established and modifiable risk factor for urinary incontinence, but conclusive evidence for a beneficial effect of weight loss on urinary incontinence is lacking. METHODS: We randomly assigned 338 overweight and obese women with at least 10 urinary-incontinence episodes per week to an intensive 6-month weight-loss program that included diet, exercise, and behavior modification (226 patients) or to a structured education program (112 patients). RESULTS: The mean (+/-SD) age of the participants was 53+/-11 years. The body-mass index (BMI) (the weight in kilograms div

Socio-demographic and economic correlates of overweight status in Chinese adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate over-weight prevalence and socio-demographic and economic correlates in Chinese adolescents. METHODS: Weight, height, waist circumference, and socio-demo-graphic and economic variables of 6863 middle and high school students were measured. RESULTS: 10% of girls and 17% of boys were overweight. Waist circumference and overweight risk were significantly associated with pubertal status (P<0.05). High levels of parental education and family income were significant risk factors for overweight (P<0.05). DISCUSSION: Our findings underscore the need for development of evid

Shared risk and protective factors for overweight and disordered eating in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Weight-related problems, including obesity, eating disorders, and disordered eating, are major public health problems in adolescents. The identification of shared risk and protective factors for these problems can guide the development of relevant interventions to a broad spectrum of weight-related problems. This paper examines the prevalence and co-occurrence of overweight, binge eating, and extreme weight-control behaviors (vomiting, diet pills, laxatives, and diuretics) in adolescents and identifies shared risk and protective factors from within the socioenvironmental, personal,

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement in the overweight and obese patient.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement in the obese patient has been considered a relative contraindication due to the impedance of gastric transillumination and inability to approximate the abdominal and gastric wall. The aim of this study was to determine the overall success rate, morbidity, and PEG-related mortality in overweight and obese patients. METHODS: Three hundred fifty-five consecutive patients were retrospectively evaluated over a 1-year period at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center for postprocedure-related PEG and PEG/jeju
