A haemorrhagic diathesis is described in infants; this is preceded and accompanied by constitutional symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, anorexia, and pallor. These children had a severe coagulation abnormality, due to deficiency of vitamin-K-dependent coagulation factors, and it was corrected by administration of vitamin K. No conclusion could be drawn as to the aetiology of this condition but some possible causes are discussed.

Normocytic anaemia is caused either by hypoproliferation of haemopoietic tissue or increased destruction of red cell. Osteopetrosis is a rare cause of anaemia. The leading clinical features are pallor, growth failure, hepatosplenomegaly.On hematological examination, anemia, thrombocytopenia, leucocytosis and myelophthisic anemia are commonly observed in this disease. We are highlighting osteopetrosis as a rare cause of anemia presenting to us for evaluation of anemia.

Malaria is an important vector-borne infectious disease, caused by plasmodium parasite. Congenital malaria, however, is rare and may be acquired either during pregnancy, at the time of delivery or after birth. A case of symptomatic congenital malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax and characterised by fever, irritability, pallor and jaundice, is presented in a 4-week-old infant.

A 10-year-old boy was admitted with complaints of fever, pallor, fatigue and skin bleeds of 10 days duration and diagnosed as very severe aplastic anemia. He was given intensive immunosuppressive therapy but showed no response to therapy. He later evolved into acute myeloid leukemia. The occurrence of AML is reviewed and possible pathogenesis is discussed.

A 61 year old man presented with abdominal pain typical of chronic cholecystitis of one month's duration. Pallor was noted on examination and investigation uncovered myelofibrosis and a small gallstone. Cholecystectomy relieved the pain and pathological examination of the gall bladder showed widespread myeloid metaplasia. This is the first reported case of myelofibrosis presenting as chronic cholecystitis.

Weekly intramuscular injections of slow-release, depot methyl prednisolone to 15 adult Dutch rabbits did not bring about an increase in the volume of their carotid bodies. However, they caused swelling of chief cells with discrete areas of pallor in the cytoplasm. Factors responsible for these changes appear to be increased storage of catecholamines and an increased number of swollen mitochondria.

In an infant of 15 months with the diencephalic syndrome, urinary excretion of norepinephrine was moderately raised and epinephrine greatly so. It is suggested that catecholamine secretion may be due to sympathetic stimulation at the level of the diencephalon, by a space-occupying lesion pressing on the thalamohypothalamic pathway. Some of the symptoms of the diencephalic syndrome such as euphoria, irritability, skin pallor, and hypertension may be the result of catecholamine secretion.

UNLABELLED: In patients with proliferative diabetic vitreoretinopathy the authors noticed tractive vitreoretinal distortion of the optic disk to the nasal side. As a result of this distortion a reduction in visual acuity, pallor of the optic disk, and changes in the visual evoked potentials were registered. We report a novel and simple application of skin conductance response (SCR) testing for diagnosis of a new-onset iatrogenic Harlequin syndrome in an infant. Isolated ipsilateral facial pallor, complicated by thermally induced systemic sympathetic vasodilatation, and preferential lateral decubitus positioning, mimics harlequin colour change. Correct diagnosis as Harlequin syndrome with facial sympathetic interruption was demonstrated by diminution of SCR.

The clinical symptom, perceived at body level, such as pain, dyskinesia, circulatory changes (tachycardia, blushing, pallor) is intrinsic and simultaneous with parallel changes at the mind level, such as anxiety, sorrow, instability, joy, depression and shame. Therefore, it has to be distinguished within the symptom, the overt component - somatic alterations - and the latent component - changes in mental processes. Hence, the global psychosomatic nature is intrinsic to the clinical symptoms.

Although the visual acuity was normal, there was a relative afferent pupillary defect, and a mild decrease in color vision, mild optic disk pallor, and a nasal field defect along the central vertical meridian. These hundred seventy-two Chinese patients with atopic dermatitis were compared with a Caucasian population for the basic features. Significant findings occurred: personal or family history of atopy, early age of onset, xerosis, ichthyosis, palmar hyperlinearity, and facial pallor. Laboratory findings of immunologic alteration and altered pharmacologic reactivity are relatively more important features for the diagnosis of atopic dermatitis.

The authors report 3 cases of epidural hematoma in infants under one year of age. The trauma had been minimal with a long symptom-free interval preceding the first clinical symptoms: anemia and its consequences, pallor, bradycardia, and finally shock. CT scan revealed the hematoma. In one case, it showed an asymptomatic hematoma which posed a therapeutic problem.

Effects of a single intravenous dose of highly purified staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA; 0.5 mg/kg) were studied in conscious rhesus monkeys. The mean survival time for four of five experimental monkeys was 8.7 h. Vomiting, pallor, abdominal distension, occasional diarrhea and dehydration were observed. Tachycardia and sustained hypotension developed prior to death. During vomiting, transient hypertension was induced.
