Specific and nonspecific panniculitis sometimes occurs during the course of connective tissue diseases. However, the association of panniculitis and dermatomyositis (DM) has only rarely been described. Previous reports have suggested that panniculitis may be an inherent part of DM but, because the cases reported are few, it is difficult to know the significance of this unusual association. We describe 2 patients with DM in whom panniculitis developed during the course of the disease, and discuss its clinical and diagnostic significance.

The differential diagnosis of panniculitis may be challenging due to the uniform clinical presentation of different panniculitis subsets. We describe a 45-year-old woman with a 30 year history of panniculitis, who had repeatedly failed to fulfill diagnostic criteria for various panniculitis subsets. Finally, erythema induratum was diagnosed and she was successfully treated with antituberculous chemotherapy. The wide spectrum of histological alterations of chronic erythema induratum as well as the sensitivity of polymerase chain reaction for Mycobacterium tuberculosis in erythema induratum lesi…

This study was undertaken to ascertain the histopathology and aetiology of cutaneous nodules observed in Parkinson's patients treated with continuous subcutaneous apomorphine. Ten patients were recruited, answered questionnaires, and underwent skin biopsies and full blood count, and nine were patch tested to apomorphine and its preservative. Six had serum IgE levels measured. A florid panniculitis was seen in all biopsies; five were predominantly eosinophilic, three lymphocytic and two neutrophilic; in seven cases the panniculitis was mixed and in three it was septal. Patch testing was univers…

Four cases of panniculitis ossificans were treated in 1978-1994. They all occurred at the distal phalanx. Pain, swell beneath nails, ulcer, pyorrhea, clark red skin were observed. X-ray examination of 2 cases showed dense shadows in the solft tissue of the distal phalanx. Pathologically the lesion was flatten-round, and separated with the bone. The cut surface was gray and sandy. Histological pictures were the same in 4 cases, namely atrophy of subcutaneons adipose tissue, the osteoid and new bone were seen. Two cases formed the cartilage and the background showed small vessels, proliferative …

In most western countries, scurvy has become a rare clinical entity. However, it may still be encountered in selected situations. It can mimic connective tissue disease, because of multiorgan involvement. Panniculitis has not previously been described in association with scurvy.

A case is presented of a 67-year-old man with chronic abdominal pain thought to be due to peptic ulcer disease. He developed nodules of panniculitis (nodular fat necrosis), resulting in extensive investigations for pancreatic disease. He was ultimately found to have low-grade pancreatitis associated with a pancreas divisum. Surgical treatment of this congenital anomaly resulted in complete resolution of the panniculitis and abdominal pain. Panniculitis as a manifestation of pancreatitis is well documented. However, panniculitis leading to the discovery of chronic pancreatitis with a surgically…

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is a rare primary cutaneous lymphoma characterized by infiltration of the subcutaneous tissue by neoplastic cytotoxic T cells mimicking panniculitis. There is a strong association between SPTCL and lupus erythematosus panniculitis (LEP). However, patients who were diagnosed with LEP with a preceding diagnosis of SPTCL have been scarcely reported. We herein reported a 21-year-old Thai woman presenting to a dermatology clinic for evaluation of a 1-month history of a painful mass on the right buttock and bilateral upper eyelid swelling. A sub…

We describe the clinical, histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings in an additional case of lipoatrophic panniculitis selectively involving the ankles in a 12-year-old boy. This idiopathic, rarely reported entity is presumed to have an autoimmune pathogenesis. Histological findings are a lipophagic lobular panniculits, that in our case featured focally increased numbers of lymphocytes rimming the adipocytes, and infiltration of vascular walls by mildly atypical lymphoid cells, raising the differential diagnosis of subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma.

Many cases of hemophagocytic syndromes with cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis (CHP) are being classified and considered as a natural disease progression of subcutaneous panniculitic T-cell lymphoma (SPTL). Review of the literature on both CHP and SPTL discloses distinct patterns suggesting these disorders may not be equivalent, even though a terminal hemophagocytic syndrome may be associated with each. Some SPTL appear to have association with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), show malignant histopathology in the skin, and may disseminate terminally, with a majority of cases showing a rapidly fatal …

We describe an experimental model of the fasciitis-panniculitis syndrome, which includes eosinophilic fasciitis and its related disorders. Rats were given a single or repeated subcutaneous injections of saline or a 10% lipase solution. The injection sites were studied histologically and histomorphometrically. With few exceptions, the subcutaneous-fascial unit of the saline-injected rats was normal. An acute necrotizing panniculitis with inflammatory involvement of the adjacent fascia was found 2 days after a single injection of lipase. Three to 6 weeks after a single injection of lipase, the s…
