Studies on paragonimiasis: treatment with mebendazole, emetine with mebendazole and praziquantel.

One hundred cases of paragonimiasis from Saraburi province, Thailand were studied with respect to epidemiology, clinical manifestations, radiography and treatment. Highly endemic areas were Cha-om and Sum-pugpaew villages in Kang-koy district. The ratio of male to female was 48:52. Uncooked crabs and shrimps are the second intermediate hosts of Paragonimus. Hemoptysis and chronic cough were the main symptoms; with crepitations and rhonchi in both lungs. There was no specific changes in chest X-rays of the lungs, except in cases of hemoptysis where changes in pulmonary vessels were observed. To…

Results of decortication in chronic empyema with special reference of paragonimiasis.

During a recent 6 years period, we managed chronic empyema by decortication, either alone or in combination with thoracoplasty, in 58 patien … on to avoid the necessity for a second major procedure. Chronic empyema is a common complication of paragonimiasis in Korea and by inference in other parts of the world where PWI is endemic. As international travel increases, some patients with PWI and complicating empyema may be seen in the United States. American thoracic surgeons should be aware of this disea …

Pulmonary paragonimiasis in childhood. A cause of persistent pneumonia and hemoptysis.

A 4-year-old Filipino girl, a recent immigrant to Hawaii, had hemoptysis, and a chest roentgenogram disclosed diffuse infiltrates of the right lung. Microscopic examination of a morning gastric aspirate showed numerous golden-brown, operculated ova, and microscopic examination of sputum and stool specimens confirmed these ova to be those of the lung fluke, Paragonimus westermani. She responded favorably to bithionol therapy and was asymptomatic and growing normally 2 1/2 years after therapy.

[Immuno-Diffusion And Complement-Fixation Test In Paragonimiasis Of Cat].

In order to observe the complement fixation test and immuno-diffusion test of paragonimiasis, the sera taken at 10 days intervals up to 150 days from cats infected with Paragonimus westermani were examined by the above two immunological methods. The resultant findings were as follows: 1)The complement fixation test showed positive reaction 20 days after the infection with 20 metacercariae, and 40~50 days after the infection with 10 metacercariae. The highest titer was observed 110 days later following the acceleration at 80 days later. 2)In immuno-diffusion test, one are appeared 30 days after…

Degranulated Eosinophilia: An Unexpected Clue in Diagnosis of Ectopic Paragonimiasis.

INTRODUCTION: Paragonimiasis is an important food-borne parasitic zoonosis caused by Paragonimus spp. CASE PRESENTATION: This report details a case of Paragonimus infection in a 3-year-old boy in Southwest China, who presented with ectopic subcutaneous masses, which was originally based on an unexpected clue of degranulated eosinophilia, confirmed with a combination of epidemiological investigation and serum test for Paragonimus-specific antibody test. CONCLUSIONS: Our case indicates possible misdiagnosis of paragonimus-related disease in endemic climates, not to mention nonendemic areas, es…

A case of cerebral paragonimiasis misdiagnosed as eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis.

Paragonimiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Paragonimus westermani infection, and migration to the brain results in cerebral paragonimiasis. Cerebral paragonimiasis is now extremely rare, but a few cases are still reported. A 48-year-old Japanese woman presented with right-hand convulsion, right-hand numbness, sputum, and fatigue. Chest computed tomography demonstrated multiple nodular lesions, and head computed tomography revealed a hemorrhagic lesion in the left motor cortex. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple small ring-shaped lesions with surrounding edema. Laboratory evaluat…

Systematic teaching method to enhance the effectiveness of training for paragonimiasis.

The clinical symptoms of human paragonimiasis are complex and variable, and patients can easily be misdiagnosed. Pagumogonimus skrjabini is the species causing this disease found only in China. A 2002 epidemiological survey showed that the rate of paragonimiasis was 21·96% in the migration areas of the Three-Gorge Reservoir, Chongqing, China. Therefore, there is a need to train medical workers to treat individuals in these areas. The Third Military Medical University (TMMU) in Chongqing built a comprehensive and systematic teaching method, which included teaching students about the basic biolo…

Angiographic findings in 2 children with cerebral paragonimiasis with hemorrhage.

Hemorrhagic events associated with cerebral paragonimiasis are not rare, especially in children and adolescents; however, angiographic evidence of cerebrovascular involvement has not been reported. The authors describe angiographic abnormalities of the cerebral arteries seen in 2 children in whom cerebral paragonimiasis was associated with hemorrhagic stroke. The patients presented with acute intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Angiography revealed a beaded appearance and long segmental narrowing of arteries, consistent with arteritis. In both patients, involved vessels were seen in the…

MRI findings of intraspinal extradural paragonimiasis granuloma in a child.

Spinal paragonimiasis is a rare entity. We present a unique case of paragonimiasis involving the extradural space. MR imaging of the thoracic spine showed a bean-shaped extradural mass that extended through the left intervertebral foramen to paravertebral thickened pleura. This finding offers imaging evidence to support the theory that larvae of Paragonimus migrate through perivascular or perineural tissues into the extradural space. Another MRI finding was the hemorrhagic foci in the mass, which occurs frequently in the intracranial paragonimiasis and could also be a feature of the intraspina…
