This study investigated the effects of low-dose and high-dose alacepril on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and autonomic nervous system in healthy dogs. Six Beagle dogs received low-dose (2.0 mg/kg/day) or high-dose (6.0 mg/kg/day) alacepril for 4 weeks. Blood pressure, the urinary aldosterone-to-creatinine ratio (UAld: Cre), echocardiographic variables, and heart rate variability were assessed pre- and post-treatment. High-dose alacepril reduced blood pressure and left ventricular dimensions, indicating a reduced preload and afterload. Heart rate variability analysis showed an

BACKGRUOUND: The autonomic nervous system plays a crucial role in the brain's communication with metabolically important peripheral organs, modulating insulin sensitivity and secretion. Increased sympathetic tone is a common feature in prediabetes and diabetes. The parasympathetic nervous system activity might be improvable through resonance frequency breathing (RFB) with heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) training.
METHODS: We here investigated the effect of a 4-week mobile RFB-HRV-BF intervention on glucose metabolism and HRV of 30 healthy adults (17 females; mean age 25.77±3.64 ye…

OBJECTIVE: Medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) and related syndromes are common and place a substantial burden on both patients and society. Chronic psychological distress and dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system may be common factors associated with MUPS, although previous studies have reported mixed results. The aims of this meta-analysis are to provide an updated synthesis of studies investigating heart rate variability (HRV) indices associated with autonomic nervous system functioning in three common MUPS syndromes and to explain inconsistencies in previous study findin

Various devices have been developed to assess impairment of the autonomic nervous system, while other devices have been developed to evaluate the motor system. However, no devices have been developed to examine the interaction between the autonomic and somatic nervous systems. Therefore, the device described here, a square platform which was 0.7x0.7 m in length and 0.1m thick, was developed to examine somatic-autonomic interaction. The device can be used by placing it directly on the floor or on 1 of 2 pivots; one that allowed the platform to move 0.2m (+/-44.1 degrees) in the front to back or

Reproductive processes place significant physiological demands on animals, often accompanied by hormonal and neural changes. In this study, … ase in heart rate, often accompanied by increased RMSSD, was observed during egg-laying, suggesting parasympathetic nervous system dominance during this phase. This pattern is similar to observation reported in other species (e.g., horses and chum salmon), where bradycardia during reproductive events is associated with elevated parasympathetic tone. Our study reported an appare …

BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol consumption in alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with autonomic nervous system dysregulation, increasing cardiovascular risk, and high alcohol cravings. Heart rate variability (HRV), a marker of autonomic nervous system responsiveness to stressors, may mediate alcohol's impact on the cardiovascular system. While pregnenolone (PREG) has been shown to normalize heart rate and blood pressure in individuals with AUD, its effects on sympathetic and parasympathetic components of HRV and related alcohol craving are not known.

OBJECTIVE: One of the METHODS used to assess autonomic nervous system dysfunction in the etiology of panic disorder (PD) is heart rate variability (HRV). HRV is controlled by the sympathetic and parasympathetic (vagal) branches of the autonomic nervous system and reflects the capacity of autonomic stimulation by the parasympathetic system. The aim of this study was to evaluate heart rate variability (HRV) time domain parameters based on twenty four hour holter ECG analysis among drug-naive patients with panic disorder (PD) without any other medical and psychiatric comorbidity.

This review explores current and emerging neuromodulation techniques targeting the cardiac autonomic nervous system for the treatment and prevention of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. Arrhythmias remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, with the autonomic nervous system playing a crucial role in arrhythmogenesis. Interventions span surgical, pharmacological, and bioelectronic methods. We discuss the range of neuromodulation methods targeting the stellate ganglion, the spinal region, the parasympathetic system, and other promising methods. These include stellate ganglion block

Modulation of the parasympathetic tone leads to extensive physiological reactions at several levels, including the decreased production of proinflammatory cytokines. Many studies have demonstrated that chronic inflammatory diseases are associated with reduced parasympathetic and increased sympathetic activities. Moreover, it was demonstrated that a low parasympathetic and a high sympathetic activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) predicts a poor therapeutic response to anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) treatment compared to RA patients with a more balanced autonomic nervous system.

This study compared the nocturnal autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in seven sickle cell trait (SCT) carriers and six subjects with normal hemoglobin in response to exercise Sympathetic and parasympathetic indices of nocturnal ANS were measured in the two groups before and 24 and 48 h after a strenuous exercise consisting of the repetition of three maximal exercise bouts. Global ANS activity decreased 24 h after exercise in both groups and was lower before as well as after exercise in SCT carriers. Indices of parasympathetic activity were lower in SCT carriers at all times, indicating a

Aging is associated with structural and functional changes in the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which innervates the whole body, and its altered function may influence almost all body systems. Changes related to aging are found in autonomic nerves and ganglia, and ANS controlled functions including cardiovascular functions. Much of the current knowledge about age-related changes in sympathetic nervous function is derived from studies of circulating catecholamine levels, norepinephrine kinetics and microneurographic recordings from sympathetic nerves of skeletal muscle. Significant evidence s

Neurogastroenterology, a rapidly evolving field, investigates the intricate interactions between the nervous system and the organs of the gastrointestinal tract. This review offers a comprehensive summary of innervation of the gastrointestinal tract, focusing on both extrinsic and intrinsic components. Extrinsic innervation involves the autonomic nervous system, with sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers controlling various digestive functions, while intrinsic innervation, represented by the enteric nervous system, operates largely independently, orchestrating complex processes such as motili

To elucidate parasympathetic cerebrovascular innervation of the rat sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), we injected wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase into the SPG of one side and traced anterogradely labeled nerve fibers. Three days after the injection, the animals were killed and tissues including the SPG, major cerebral arteries, and ethmoidal arteries were reacted by the tetramethylbenzidine method. A number of cells and nerve fibers labeled with wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase were observed in the SPG. The nasal mucous membrane, the periorbital soft

An automobile accident left a 26-year-old man in stupor with a complete right third-nerve palsy. Although fixed to light, the right pupil (only) exhibited continual concentric oscillations, initially at 1 Hz but slowing to 0.3 Hz during 2 weeks' observation. The pathophysiologic characteristics of this unique movement are uncertain but may involve central parasympathetic nervous system dysfunction.

Individuals with obesity in Western societies often face weight-related stigmatization and social exclusion. Recurrent exposure to prejudice and negative social feedback alters one's behavior in future social interactions. In this study, we aimed to investigate autonomic nervous system and affective responses to social interactions in individuals with obesity. Women and men with (n = 56) and without (n = 56) obesity participated in episodes of social inclusion and social exclusion using a virtual ball-tossing game. During the experiment, heart rate was measured and parasympathetic activity (ov

Changes of neurotransmitter levels and autonomic nervous system parameters during sleep, such as variations in blood pressure, heart and respiratory rate are well known. REM and NREM sleep stage differences are created by neurotransmitter changes mainly generated in the brainstem, but several distinct subcortical areas, such as the amygdala, hippocampus, basal ganglia or anterior insula are involved. The neurotransmitter changes differ in sleep stages and define not only the stage of sleep, but also the autonomic alterations. During NREM sleep, there is a parasympathetic dominance, while durin
