Mental health and parenting characteristics of caregivers of children with spina bifida.

INTRODUCTION: Within the chronic medical illness literature, associations exist between caring for an affected child and parent mental health. The few studies examining both mothers and fathers provide mixed results. The purpose of this study is to examine associations between caregiver anxiety, depression, and parenting variables in caregivers of youth with SB as these relate to marital status, age, education, household income, work status, and child's severity of SB. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine associations between anxiety, depression, and parenting variables in caregiver…

Maternal anxiety, risk factors and parenting in the first post-natal year.

BACKGROUND: The antecedents and consequences of maternal post-natal anxiety have received comparatively less attention than depression despite being one of the most frequently reported mental health difficulties experienced by parents following childbirth. The aim of this study was to extend emerging literature on post-natal anxiety by investigating the prevalence of maternal anxiety symptoms, and its relationship with parenting behaviours (i.e. warmth, hostility) and experiences (i.e. parenting efficacy and satisfaction) within the first post-natal year. The psychosocial risk factors for post…

Temperament as a moderator of the effects of parenting on children's behavior.

This study examined the role of child temperament as moderator of the effect of parenting style on children's externalizing and internalizing behaviors. A series of structural equation models were fit to a representative sample of 2,631 Canadian children from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth. In addition to testing for the presence of Temperament × Parenting interactions, these models also examined the direct and indirect effects of a number of additional contextual factors such as neighborhood problems, neighborhood cohesion, social support, and maternal depression. The …

Validating the Voodoo Doll Task as a Proxy for Aggressive Parenting Behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Six studies (N = 1,081 general population parents) assessed the validity of the Voodoo Doll Task (VDT) as a proxy for aggressive parenting behaviors. METHODS: Participants were given an opportunity to symbolically inflict harm by choosing to stick "pins" into a doll representing their child. RESULTS: Individual differences in parents' trait aggression (Studies 1, 2, and 6), state hostility (Study 3), attitudes towards the corporal punishment of children (Study 4), self-control (Study 6), depression (Study 6), and child physical abuse risk (Study 6) were associated with increased p…

Depression and parenting by nonoffending mothers of children who experienced sexual abuse.

Parenting may be one mechanism by which depression in nonoffending mothers impacts child emotional and behavioral adjustment after sexual abuse. This study examined the relationship between self-reported maternal depression and parenting behaviors by nonoffending mothers of children who experienced sexual abuse. The participants were 204 nonoffending biological mother-child pairs recruited from a clinic providing services for children who experienced sexual abuse. The mothers completed pretreatment self-report measures of demographic information, depression, and parenting behaviors. Children (…

Child sex moderates the association between negative parenting and childhood conduct problems.

Although multiple dimensions of negative parenting behavior are associated with childhood conduct problems (CP), there is relatively little research on whether the association is equally robust in boys and girls. To improve the specificity of current models of negative parenting and offspring CP, we explored the potential moderating role of child sex in a sample of 179 5- to 10-year-old ethnically diverse boys and girls with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who were assessed using multiple methods (i.e., rating scales, semistructured interviews) and informants (i.e.,…

Partner abuse or violence, parenting and neighborhood influences on children's behavioral problems.

We examined the relationship between neighborhood characteristics, parenting behaviors, experiences of intimate partner abuse or violence (IPV) and children's behavioral problems in a socioeconomically diverse sample of 383 families residing in an urban environment. Data were collected in the Fall/Winter of 2002. The census block group of residence was used as our measure of neighborhood. Census block groups typically contain 1500 residents on average. IPV was measured using a modified version of the HITS (physically Hurt, Insult, Threaten, and Screamed at) scale, a short four item tool assess…

One hundred and nine children with ADHD were interviewed using the MINI Kid questionnaire. The children were divided into combined and inattentive subtypes. The level of parenting stress was measured with the self-report Parenting Stress Index and Parental Symptom Scale (Symptom Check List, SCL-90). The data were used to identify child and parental risk factors. Results. Combined subtype was highl…

Treating nicotine use and dependence of pregnant and parenting smokers: an update.

A growing volume of research since 1975 has demonstrated that clinically proven, effective interventions exist to produce long-term or even permanent abstinence from tobacco for all smokers. Achieving cessation is important for all smokers but especially for pregnant and parenting smokers because their smoking poses risks not only for themselves but also for their pregnancies and children. Treatments for smokers in general apply to parenting smokers, but special considerations regarding treatment need to be made for pregnant women. Due to the harms associated with exposure to environmental tob…
