Preoperative treatment of a parotid hemangioma with 100% ethyl alcohol.

Hemangiomas are one of the most common childhood neoplasms, occurring in approximately 12% of infants younger than one year of age. The lesions typically appear shortly after birth, increase in size over the first year and characteristically regress over the next decade. Because hemangiomas can be visible during an important stage of a child's social development, numerous authors have pursued alternative treatment strategies to avoid or reduce this lengthy involution process. Unfortunately, no effective medical treatment has been reported for children with large, deforming hemangiomas of the p

Multiple Parotid Sebaceous Lymphadenoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare parotid gland neoplasm. Up to now, there have been several studies that have discussed the imaging manifestations of salivary sebaceous lymphadenoma. In this paper, we have reported a case of multiple parotid sebaceous lymphadenoma demonstrated by ultrasound, CT scan, and MRI examinations, including diffusion-weighted imaging. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first one on DWI findings of sebaceous lymphadenomas, and also the first report on multiple lesions in unilateral parotid gland. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old w

[Tuberculosis of the parotid gland: a rare differential diagnosis of parotid tumor].

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterial infection of the parotid gland is rare even in countries where the disease is rife. Because patients do not have specific symptoms of tuberculosis and tuberculosis of the parotid gland frequently presents as a neoplasm, most patients undergo parotidectomy. PATIENTS: In this text we present a case report and the review of 20 well documented cases from the literature. The problems of diagnosis and therapy, especially the problem of distinguishing tuberculous infection from another parotid swelling such as a benignoma or a granuloma, are analyzed. RESULTS: Eighty perce

PRISMA-Extracapsular Dissection Versus Superficial Parotidectomy in Treatment of Benign Parotid Tumors: Evidence From 3194 Patients.

Benign parotid tumor is one of the most common neoplasms in head and neck region. Its therapeutic methods have been debatable topics over the past 100 years. Recently, some surgeons suggest that extracapsular dissection (ECD) instead of superficial parotidectomy (SP) for treatment of benign parotid tumor. This study aimed to compare ECD with SP in the treatment of benign parotid tumors by a meta-analysis.We searched Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Ovid, and Web of Science databases on February 14, 2015 for studies that assessed clinical outcomes of SP and ECD as surgical techniques for the m

Lipomatous lesions of the parotid gland.

PURPOSE: Lipomatous lesions of the parotid gland are rare and seldom considered in the initial diagnosis of a parotid mass. We report our experience in the management of patients with lipomatous lesions affecting the parotid gland. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of all parotidectomies performed for neoplastic lesions in the maxillofacial unit between 1975 and 2003 and patients with lipomatous lesions involving the parotid gland were identified; 638 parotidectomies were performed in this period on 629 patients in which 660 neoplasms were identified. Eight patients were found to h

Salivary duct carcinoma of the parotid gland: a case report.

The authors report a case of a salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) of the parotid gland revealed by a facial palsy. The clinical and pathological features of this highly malignant neoplasm are described. The aggressive nature of this form demands a combined chemo-radio-surgical treatment; only early recognition and treatment are likely to result in a favourable outcome.

Parotid gland tumors in a Korean population.

Salivary gland tumors occur in about 3% of the head and neck tumors, and among the salivary gland tumors, parotid gland tumor occurs in about 80%. Because of its low frequency and small cases, it is hard to establish the epidemiologic characteristics of the tumors. This study was performed retrospectively from February 1987 to August 2010. There were 95 male, and 76 female patients. Most of the patients complained of the painless and progressively enlarged mass in the preauricular area. Peak incidence of benign parotid gland tumor was at the fifth decade of life. In the malignant tumors, peak

Papillary cystadenoma of the major salivary gland: A case report and review of literature.

Papillary cystadenoma (PC) of the salivary gland is an uncommon benign epithelial neoplasm that shows predominantly multicystic growth pattern with intraluminal papillary proliferation and areas of oncocytic differentiation. We report a case of papillary cystadenoma of the parotid gland in a 44-years-old female. The patient presented with painful nodular swelling in the right parotid region for two months. Ultrasonography revealed a well marginated oval lesion with altered signal intensity involving the superficial lobe. The excision specimen showed a neoplasm with multicystic spaces having pa

Challenges in the differential diagnosis of interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma of intraparotid lymph node vs. metastatic malignant melanoma with unknown primary site.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is an uncommon form of malignant histiocytosis affecting dendritic cells. The parotid gland more frequently than other salivary glands has metastasis from extraparotid tumours, which in 80% of cases are melanomas and squamous cell carcinomas. Herein we report our case, a 64-year-old woman who presented with a short history of fluctuating in size swelling below her right ear. Ultrasound scan showed a loculated cystic lesion extending in the parotid parenchyma. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) revealed appearances that were highly suspicious of malignanc

Sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare benign salivary gland tumor of uncertain histogenesis. We report such a case in a 37-year-old female presenting with a parotid swelling. Recognition of key histological features will readily allow differentiation of this neoplasm from its benign and malignant mimics. The prognosis is excellent following excision.

Basal cell adenocarcinoma of the minor salivary gland - A rare case report involving the upper lip.

Minor salivary gland neoplasms constitute up to approximately 25% of all salivary gland tumors. The incidence of malignancy of these tumors is slightly greater than half. Basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCAC) is a rare salivary gland malignancy that occurs most commonly in the parotid gland. In this report, we describe a case of an older woman presenting with BCAC of the upper lip arising from the minor salivary gland.

Amylase as an additional marker of salivary gland neoplasms. An immunoperoxidase study.

The presence of amylase in normal and neoplastic salivary gland tissue was investigated by immunoperoxidase techniques. Apart from normal and inflamed parotid glands, different kinds of tumours were studied with regard to amylase: acinic cell tumours, adenocarcinomas, adenoidcystic carcinomas, salivary duct carcinomas, mucoepidermoid tumours and squamous cell carcinomas. Amylase could be seen in acinic cell tumours, but not in other neoplasms. The results were discussed with respect to the diagnostic implications.

Nodular Oncocytic Hyperplasia of Bilateral Parotid Glands With Parapharyngeal Space Extension.

Oncocytic tumors comprise a group of rare benign neoplasm of salivary glands, accounting for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. Nodular oncocytic hyperplasia characterized by multiple unencapsulated oncocytic nodules in the salivary glands is an extremely rare condition. We report a case of bilateral nodular oncocytic hyperplasia of parotid glands with parapharyngeal space extension in an 80-year-old woman whose initial presentation was recurrent parotitis. Our case may be the first report of nodular oncocytic hyperplasia in the parapharyngeal space, arising from the parotid gland. The

Epithelioid schwannoma of the facial nerve masquerading as pleomorphic adenoma: a case report.

Schwannomas arising in the parotid gland or peri-parotid region is frequently misdiagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma on cytologic preparations. The epithelioid variant of schwannoma is particularly susceptible to misdiagnosis because this neoplasm typically has epithelioid and spindled cells, which are associated with fibrillar stroma and mimic the epithelial, myoepithelial, and stromal components of a pleomorphic adenoma. Preoperative diagnosis of schwannoma is critical in order to plan appropriate management and to avoid inadvertent injury to the associated nerve during surgical resection. Thus

[Capabilities of ultrasound study in the differential diagnosis of neoplasms of the major salivary glands].

Seventy patients aged 20 to 75 years with suspected parotid gland disease were examined to study the capabilities of an ultrasound study in the diagnosis of neoplasms of the major salivary glands. B-mode ultrasonography and color Doppler imaging presented a means of detecting the presence of masses in the gland, their topography and dimensions, and specific vascularization, which allowed the option and scope of treatment to be planned.

Two malignant salivary gland tumours of different type in one patient.

The synchronous or metachronous occurrence of two tumours of the salivary glands in one patient is rare. These are mainly benign and of the same histological type. Here we report a 56-year-old man who developed a mucoepidermoid tumour of the left parotid gland four years after diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the right submandibular gland. This combination of neoplasms has not to our knowledge been reported before.

Basal cell adenoma in the deep portion of the parotid gland: a case report.

Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare, benign neoplasm that most frequently arises in the parotid gland. We treated a 54-year-old female patient with BCA that had developed in the deep portion of the left parotid gland. The patient presented with gradual facial swelling with no other symptoms. We performed a total parotidectomy to excise the mass, but we preserved the facial nerve. Histopathology revealed a well-encapsulated mass. The tumor was composed of islands of comparatively uniform, small, dark, basaloid epithelial cells in the stroma. Histologic and immunohistochemical studies concluded t
