We describe the case of a 5-year-old boy who presented with parvovirus B19 associated arthritis of the left knee lasting for 6 weeks. Other features included flu-like symptoms, a mild "slapped cheek" sign, and a macular, erythematous, lace-like rash over the chest and limbs. The analysis of the synovial fluid showed a high white cell count with a predominance of polymorphonuclear cells. The characteristic features related to parvovirus B19 associated arthropathy in children are reviewed.

We previously described an acute dermatosis characterized by pruritic erythematous and slightly papular lesions on the hands and feet in a 'gloves and socks' distribution associated with oral aphthoid lesions and fever (papular-purpuric 'gloves and socks' syndrome = PPGSS). We strongly suspected a viral origin, but serologic tests for a large panel of viruses remained negative. Subsequently, 2 cases of PPGSS with serologic evidence of a parvovirus B19 infection have been reported in the literature. Since then we observed 5 additional patients with a PPGSS. Parvovirus B19 infection could be con…

Human parvovirus B19 (HPVB19) infects and replicates in erythroid progenitor cells. Its specific cytotoxic effect on these cells results in aplastic crises in patients with congenital hemolytic anemias. Aplastic crisis due to HPVB19 infection in a healthy girl revealed occult iron deficiency anemia. The condition is characterized by a high serum iron level in the aplastic phase and rapid recovery after administration of iron. Temporary HPVB19-induced red blood cell aplasia could occur in patients with other anemias, particularly those with non-inherited form of hemolysis.

The association between gestational infection with human parvovirus (B19) and fetal loss has increased interest in this virus and demand for diagnostic testing. However, serological assays for B19 are not yet widely available. Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) testing is commonly used during the second trimester to screen for various fetal defects. We attempted to determine whether an elevated level of MSAFP would be an appropriate indication for B19-specific tests. Over a 26-month period, MSAFP tests were performed at Michigan State University for 21 392 women. Sera remaining after tha…

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for detecting parvovirus B19 DNA in clinical specimens. A pair of oligonucleotide primers spanning the PstI-fragment of the B19 virus genome was used for PCR, and a PCR product of 727 bp was amplified. B19 virus DNA was detected in all sera (n = 26) of individuals in the incubation period and acute phase of infection. PCR was useful for detecting viral B19 DNA in amniotic fluid and fetal blood of hydropic fetuses, confirming fetal B19 virus infection.

An acute, transient aplastic crisis in a 15-month old boy revealed the presence of homozygous beta-thalassaemia. The crisis was very likely due to a parvovirus infection, in view of the presence of specific IgM at the onset and of seroconversion to total antibodies. Later, requirements for transfusions were in favour of an intermediate type thalassaemia. The responsibility of the parvovirus is discussed in the light of recent data concerning the inhibitory action of this virus on bone marrow erythropoiesis.

In utero inoculation of 15 sows at various stages of gestation with a local strain of porcine parvovirus (PPV) resulted in resorption, abortion or the birth of weak, dead, or mummified foetuses. Histopathological lesions observed in foetuses of sows slaughtered at various post-inoculation intervals consisted of a perivascular inflammatory reaction primarily observed in the brain and kidneys. The presence and extent of the inflammatory reaction were dependent upon the age of the foetus at the time of infection. In the sow a perivascular inflammatory reaction was found in the endometrium, while …

Bile salt export pump (BSEP) deficiency, also termed progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 2 (PFIC2), is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the ATP-binding cassette, sub-family B member 11 (ABCB11) gene, predisposing to cholestasis and progressive liver damage. Although parvovirus B19 is a recognized but rare cause of acute hepatitis in children, its role in adult liver disease remains uncertain. To expand the knowledge on this topic, we performed a narrative review of published adult cases of B19-associated hepatitis and report the case of a 46-year-old immunocompeten…

Pancytopenia is a diagnostic challenge due to its broad differential diagnosis, including infections and hematological malignancies. Parvovirus B19 infection is a recognized but uncommon cause of transient pancytopenia. However, positive viral serology or viremia may lead to diagnostic anchoring and delay the identification of underlying malignant disorders. We report the case of a 17-year-old previously healthy female presenting with persistent fever and tonsillitis. Laboratory investigations revealed pancytopenia with agranulocytosis. Blood serology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were p…

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a human ssDNA virus with ample pathogenic potential, characterized by a selective tropism for erythroid progenitor cells (EPCs) in the bone marrow. In vitro, in addition to EPCs, UT7/EpoS1 cells are widely used as a model cell system, permissive to viral replication, although in a restrictive pattern. In our work, we applied mRNA high-throughput sequencing technology (HTS) and a dedicated bioinformatic pipeline to investigate both viral and cellular expression profiles in the course of B19V infection of UT7/EpoS1 cells. Mapping of the viral transcriptome detailed the d…

Goose parvovirus (GPV) is a highly lethal infectious pathogen primarily affecting goslings under one month old, with infection resulting in nearly 100 % mortality. However, no recombinant vaccine has been proven effective in preventing GPV infection. This study aims to structurally characterize GPV virus-like particles (VLPs) produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae using cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) and three-dimensional reconstruction, to explore potential binding receptors, and to preliminarily verify the immunogenicity of GPV VLPs. The results show that GPV VLPs produced from Saccharom…

Human Parvovirus B19 is a single-stranded DNA virus responsible for generally mild and self-limiting infections. In children, it causes erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), while in adults it often presents as symmetrical peripheral polyarthritis. Transmission occurs primarily via respiratory droplets, especially in settings with close contact, leading to recurrent seasonal outbreaks. PVB19 can cause hematologic complications in individuals with underlying blood disorders. Rare but serious complications may affect the cardiac, hepatic, renal, and neurological systems, as well as lead to hydro…

Nonepisodic angioedema with eosinophilia (NEAE) is characterised by a single episode of angioedema localised to the extremities and peripheral eosinophilia. While NEAE can develop in response to infection or vaccination, NEAE associated with acute parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection is rare. We describe the case of a young woman with NEAE that developed during acute B19V infection. She presented with 1-week history of pruritus and polyarthralgia in the extremities, followed by the development of peripheral oedema, and was positive for anti-B19V IgM antibody. Her arthralgia improved within 2 weeks …

Parvovirus B19 is a common viral pathogen that commonly manifests with mild, flu-like symptoms or an erythematous rash. In rare instances, it may lead to hematological complications, even in immunocompetent individuals. This report presents a case of a 64-year-old male without prior hematological conditions who presented with generalized malaise, intermittent fever, and a pruritic rash. Initial laboratory findings revealed normochromic, normocytic anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and acute kidney injury. Extensive diagnostic workup excluded common bacterial and viral etiologies. Serology …

INTRODUCTION: Parvovirus B19V has been shown to be associated with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) with increased risk of post-infection anemia, especially in hemodialysis (HD) patients. This effect may be due to immunosuppression, insufficient erythropoietin, or short lifespan of red blood cells. Therefore, parvovirus infection should be investigated in this group of patients suffering from anemia or pancytopenia. We assessed the frequency of parvovirus B19 in HD patients attending Suez Canal University Hospital and analyzed the correlation of this infection with hematological parameters in th…

In this study, three different diagnostic tests for parvovirus were compared with vaccination status and parvovirus genotype in suspected canine parvovirus cases. Faecal samples from vaccinated (N17) and unvaccinated or unknown vaccination status (N41) dogs that had clinical signs of parvovirus infection were tested using three different assays of antigen tests, conventional and quantitative PCR tests. The genotype of each sample was determined by sequencing. In addition to the suspected parvovirus samples, 21 faecal samples from apparently healthy dogs were tested in three diagnostic tests to…

UNLABELLED: Parvovirus B19 has rarely been associated with acute liver failure (ALF), which has a high mortality. Plasma exchange that usually acts as a bridge to liver transplantation removes toxins, antibodies, cytokines, and can correct coagulopathy while maintaining a euvolemic state. Pediatric data regarding its use are scarce. We report a case of 16-year-old girl with acute liver failure in stage 4 encephalopathy with coagulopathy due to parvovirus B19 who was successfully managed with high-volume therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE). We tried to use it as a treatment modality due to nonava…
