Distribution of tremorogenic activity among the major superficial muscles of the upper limb in persons with Essential tremor.

OBJECTIVE: Peripheral tremor suppression has the potential to reduce tremor, but we do not currently know where best to intervene. The purpose of this study was to characterize the distribution of tremorogenic activity among upper-limb muscles. METHODS: Surface electromyography was recorded from the 15 major superficial muscles of the upper limb while 25 patients with Essential Tremor performed postural and kinetic tasks. We defined tremorogenic activity as power in the tremor band (4-8 Hz) and determined the distribution of this power among muscles. RESULTS: The distribution varied consider

Genetic variation in pure lines and crosses of large-bodied turkeys. 4. Body shape and carcass traits.

An experimental line (F) of turkeys selected long-term for increased 16-wk BW was reciprocally crossed with a primary breeding sire line (C) from a major international turkey breeder to study the inheritance of carcass traits and body shape. The birds were weighed and killed at 16 wk of age, and various measurements of muscling, leg bones, and body shape were made. The BW of males were 16.0 and 15.1 kg, respectively, in the C and F lines. The respective BW for females were 12.2 and 11.2 kg. Additive genetic variation, as indicated by differences between the F and C line, was a more important s

Glycemic variability and muscle loss in elderly type 2 diabetes: insights from continuous glucose monitoring and chest CT in 303 patients.

PURPOSE: Sarcopenia is common among older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although chronic hyperglycemia is known to contribute to muscle loss, it remains unclear whether glucose fluctuations-independent of average glucose levels-also play a role. This study aimed to investigate the association between glucose fluctuation and pectoralis muscle mass in elderly patients with T2DM. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 303 elderly patients with T2DM who underwent continuous glucose monitoring and chest CT between October 2022 and December 2025. Muscle elasticity in patients with neonatal brachial plexus palsy using shear-wave ultrasound elastography. Preliminary results.

Ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) is a noninvasive, reliable and reproducible method, used for the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of tissues. The aim of this study was to compare muscle elasticity between the healthy and the involved sides in children with neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP) using the elastography tool and to assess whether the difference was correlated with the Mallet grading system. We repeatedly measured the shear modulus coefficient of several muscles around the shoulder in stretched or passively relaxed positions on 14 patients. We evaluated the abductor

Comparison of the Electromyography Activity during Exercises with Stable and Unstable Surfaces: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The effect of electromyographic (EMG) activity on agonist muscles during exercises performed on stable and unstable surfaces remains uncertain. We aimed to review the literature regarding the comparison of the EMG activity of the agonist muscles of exercises performed on stable and unstable surfaces. Eighty-six studies that evaluated the EMG activity of 1783 individuals during exercises for the lower limbs, upper limbs, and core were included. The EMG activities of the pectoralis major (SMD = 0.28 [95% CI 0.09, 0.47]) and triceps brachii muscles (SMD = 0.45 [95% CI 0.25, 0.66]) were significan

Surgical landmarks for identification of the thoracodorsal pedicle during axillary dissection in carcinoma breast patients: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) plays a pivotal role in breast cancer surgery, serving both staging and locoregional control. The thoracodorsal pedicle (TDP), comprising the thoracodorsal artery, vein, and nerve are critical structures encountered during ALND. Preserving the TDP is essential to minimize postoperative complications, such as impaired shoulder function and arm lymphedema, and to support successful reconstructive outcomes, particularly when utilizing the latissimus dorsi muscle for flap procedures. Accurate identification and careful preservation of the TDP espec

Dose Constraints in Carbon-Ion Radiation Therapy to Minimize the Risk of Pectoral Myositis.

PURPOSE: Carbon-ion radiation therapy (C-ion RT) is an emerging nonsurgical treatment for early stage breast cancer, offering biological advantages such as high linear energy transfer (LET) and precise dose distribution. However, the risk of radiation-induced toxicity, particularly pectoral myositis, remains unclear. This study evaluates the relationship between RBE-weighted dose, LET, and pectoral myositis in patients receiving C-ion RT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fourteen patients with cT0-1N0M0 breast cancer were treated with C-ion RT (46-50 Gy [RBE]) in the prone position. Magnetic resonance i

Breast and subscapular pain following submuscular placement of breast prostheses.

The technique of placing the breast prosthesis beneath the pectoralis major and the serratus anterior muscles appears to minimize the incidence of the firm breast following breast reconstruction commonly seen with other techniques. However, in 8 of 146 individuals I have noted a problem with pain in the lateral aspect of the breast mound and the subscapular area, along with a depressed deformity superomedially and an unsightly bulge inferolaterally and/or laterally. Surgical exploration of the breast mound showed no abnormalities within the submuscular compartment. However, in all instances, t

Accessory lateral pectoral nerves supplying the pectoralis major.

Certain surgical treatment failures of the brachial plexus lesions are due to the presence of anatomical variations. Anatomical knowledge of the pectoral nerves is of clinical importance during mastectomy, neurotization or other surgical procedures in the axilla. The present case describes three nerves arising from the lateral cord of brachial plexus supplying the pectoralis major muscle one below the other which was observed during routine dissection for undergraduate students. Knowledge of certain variations as in the present case may be advantageous for cosmetic augmentations during radical

Moment arms of the shoulder musculature after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is known to increase the moment arm of the middle subregion of the deltoid during shoulder abduction; however, at present, comprehensive data regarding the shoulder muscle moment arm through the full range of abduction and flexion are not available. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to measure the instantaneous moment arms of thirteen subregions of major muscles spanning the glenohumeral joint during abduction and flexion of the shoulder after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty and (2) to compare these data with the muscle moment arms p

Thoracic skeletal muscle quantification using computed tomography and prognosis of elderly ICU patients.

In elderly ICU patients, the prevalence of skeletal muscle loss is high. Longitudinal effect of thoracic muscles, especially in elderly ICU patients, are unclear although skeletal muscle loss is related with the short- and long-term outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate whether pectoralis muscle mass loss could be a predictor of prognosis in elderly ICU patients. We retrospectively evaluated 190 elderly (age > 70 years) patients admitted to the ICU. We measured the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the pectoralis muscle (PMCSA) at the fourth vertebral region. CT scans within two days before ICU a
