BACKGROUND: The Active School Flag (ASF) programme for second-level schools in Ireland is a whole-of-school physical activity initiative involving adolescents as peer leaders. This study explores how the peer leadership of this programme influenced adolescents' skills, competencies, perceived health, and school experience. Based on situated expectancy-value theory (SEVT), we examined how outcomes met peer leaders' expectations as this can influence motivation for their peer leader role.
METHODS: Data from peer leaders' focus groups and teacher interviews conducted at beginning and end of acad

As stress levels rise globally, it is critical to understand whether stress promotes or inhibits prosocial behavior. The literature to date provides inconclusive evidence on this question. Here, we investigated whether the effects of stress on prosocial behavior depend on the interaction partner's social role. Specifically, 121 young adults (59 men, 62 women, age range = 18 - 34 years) performed the Trier Social Stress Test for Groups (TSST-G) before dividing resources among themselves and either another participant (i.e., a peer) or a TSST-G jury member (i.e., the stressor). We found that par

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders affect approximately 27% of the global population, posing a major mental health challenge. Limited access to treatment due to resource constraints highlights the need for scalable solutions. Web-based self-help programs provide low-threshold access to evidence-based strategies. When guided by peers, these programs enhance engagement and acceptability by merging autonomy with support. Peer-guided self-help apps offer a cost-effective alternative to traditional care, reaching those who might otherwise remain untreated.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the dev

Peer roles have increased within mental health and alcohol and other drug services. However, there is a lack of understanding about the 'lived experience' necessary for success in these roles and how to recruit effectively. This study explores participants' views on the essential knowledge and skills derived from lived experience to inform the design of peer roles and support effective recruitment. This qualitative study involved 132 participants employed across five multi-disciplinary organizations in the United States. Participants represent three cohorts: designated peer workers, management

BACKGROUND: Glue-sniffing among street-connected children and adolescents is a neglected public health and social issue with acute toxicity, entrenched stigma, and long-term life-course harms. In Merauke (South Papua), everyday practices, peer dynamics, and social labeling remain under-described.
OBJECTIVE: To explore lived experiences of street-connected children and adolescents who use inhalants in Merauke, focusing on initiation, accessibility, peer processes, harms, return to glue use, and perceived stigma.
METHODS: We conducted an inductive descriptive qualitative study with children an

BACKGROUND: The transition from pre-clinical to clinical medicine is challenging, particularly in applying anatomical knowledge to patient care. Reductions in dedicated anatomy teaching time have compounded this. Near-peer teaching may help address this gap by reducing hierarchy and enhancing psychological safety, though few programmes have explicitly targeted the pre-clinical to clinical transition through the integration of anatomy with clinical cases.
APPROACH: A prospective educational evaluation examined a near-peer, case-based orthopaedic anatomy programme delivered to Year 4 medical st

There is a critical lack of exploration into the firsthand experiences of autistic children in the psychological literature. We sought to address this using baseline data from a wider mixed-methods study. A total of 136 autistic children (mean age = 10.35) completed an online questionnaire. Questions explored children's understanding of autism, their feelings about being autistic in different contexts and challenges experienced. Quantitative data revealed limited autism knowledge and understanding for some. Challenges included talking about being autistic and self-advocating for needs, especia

Adolescent aggression arises within developmental, cognitive, and emotional mechanisms embedded in cultural contexts that define which behaviors are acceptable and how they are sanctioned. Cross-cultural psychology provides critical insights into how values such as honor, collectivism, and relational harmony shape the forms and meanings of aggression, influencing developmental pathways toward partner maltreatment and violence (PM/V). This review synthesizes recent findings (2020-2025) on parenting, peer norms, cognition, and digital contexts to identify culturally responsive intervention lever

Peer workers have become increasingly incorporated into addiction services worldwide, yet mainstream frameworks continue to approach their work in terms of individual roles, clinical outcomes, or organizational barriers and facilitators to implementation. These approaches often overlook the relational and ethical dimensions through which peer support is practiced and experienced, particularly under conditions of stigma, social exclusion, and structural constraint. This study draws on 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork (February 2021-July 2022) in a nonpeer-led nonprofit organization in easter

Peer interaction plays a central role in social, emotional, and cognitive development across childhood and adolescence. For autistic individuals, difficulties in peer interaction are a defining feature and are associated with reduced participation, limited social learning, and adverse outcomes such as loneliness, rejection, and isolation. Despite its importance, the literature on peer interactions in autism remains fragmented, employing diverse measures, age groups, and study designs, with inconsistent attention to individual and environmental factors. The aim of this systematic review was to

BACKGROUND: Blended digital mental health interventions combining technology with human support are more effective than stand-alone treatments. However, limited research has examined how to train and supervise personnel delivering human support components. The Kuamsha app, a gamified digital intervention for adolescent depression based on behavioral activation, was designed to be paired with low-intensity telephone-based peer support. A structured training and supervision program for peer supporters was codeveloped through workshops with mental health professionals and youth with lived experie

PURPOSE: Research shows the potential for post-traumatic growth (PTG) following spinal cord injury (SCI). Growing evidence demonstrates the role of social processes in PTG development. However, the mechanisms through which social processes might influence PTG are not well established. The review aimed to synthesise current research to provide insights into social processes involved in PTG development following SCI.
METHODS: Searches were conducted using the following databases: PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Scopus, Citation Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, and EMBASE. Nine

Peers are individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges trained to provide support to others with similar challenges. Help@Hand was a multi-site project that integrated peers into digital mental health intervention (DMHI) implementation. This study uses the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) to frame challenges reported by peers when implementing DMHIs. Individuals leading the local peer workforce completed quarterly online surveys about perceived challenges to DMHI implementation. Biannual interviews probed for details on survey-reported challenges. 103

This study addresses the pivotal role of family and friends in supporting individuals experiencing suicidal distress. The research draws insights from a workshop at an Australian Lived Experience of Suicide Summit (2023) to explore how information and peer support should be presented and used in support programs and resources for family and friends supporting someone experiencing suicidal distress. The study engaged 52 delegates in an interactive workshop, comprising individuals with a lived experience of suicidal distress (30%), those bereaved by suicide (27%), family members or friends suppo

INTRODUCTION: Female sex workers (FSWs) remain highly vulnerable to HIV, other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and broader sexual and reproductive health challenges. Peer-led interventions are widely recommended, yet their specific contributions and implementation gaps are poorly synthesised. This scoping review mapped peer-education strategies used globally to promote sexual health among FSWs, with emphasis on intervention components, outcomes, and evidence gaps, including the role of peers.
METHODS: This scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) manual and Arksey and

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities due to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), such as leprosy and lymphatic filariasis (LF), often encounter situations of stigma and discrimination that significantly impact their mental wellbeing. Mental wellbeing services are often not available at the peripheral level in NTD-endemic countries, and there is a need for such services. Basic psychological support for persons with NTDs (BPS-N) from peers is an important potential solution for addressing mental wellbeing problems. As there was no written document advising delivery of such support, NLR India brou

INTRODUCTION: Peers in the alcohol and other drug sectors possess lived-living experience (LLE) crucial for shaping community care. However, genuine consumer collaboration is often confounded by stigma. This study examined peers' perceptions, exploring their experiences regarding workforce dynamics, policy implications, and impacts on health equity. In presenting the research, we sought to synthesise the research methods and illustrate the methodological innovation and knowledge production in substance use research through authentic collaboration.
METHODS: We purposively sampled peer networks

Peer alcohol use, commonly assessed via perceptions of how many drinks peers consume, is a robust predictor of college drinking. These perceptions are formed by in-person exposure to peer drinking but also may be affected by seeing alcohol-related content (ARC) shared on peer social media accounts. Most research assesses exposure by asking about the frequency of ARC sharing by a whole friend group, potentially missing influences from specific friends. Social network methods collect information about specific friends and their behavior but few studies have used these methods to examine the effe

Vicarious contact has often been used for studying prejudice-reduction in school contexts due to its relatively accessible application through written or audiovisual portrayals of positive intergroup contact. However, these interventions may sometimes prove ineffective, thus restricting their ecological validity and independent use in education. To contribute to the understanding of factors that might facilitate or mitigate the efficacy of vicarious contact in reducing ethnic prejudice among adolescents, the present study tested for the moderating effect of anti-prejudice motivation and friend

The invention of service robots has reduced the labor cost and improved enterprises' efficiency and service quality. However, it is still difficult to enhance consumers' intention to use robot-by-robot design efficiently. Based on social roles of anthropomorphic cues, service robots can be divided into peer (e.g., kind and amiable friends) or tutor (e.g., authoritative and professional experts) robots. From a matching perspective, this paper investigates (1) whether robot role and service type have an impact on consumers' intention to employ service robots in different ways, and (2) how cognit
