Distortion-product otoacoustic emission suppression tuning curves in humans.

Distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) suppression data as a function of suppressor level (L(3)) for f(2) frequencies from 0.5 to 8 kHz and L(2) levels from 10 to 60 dB sensation level were used to construct suppression tuning curves (STCs). DPOAE levels in the presence of suppressors were converted into decrement versus L(3) functions, and the L(3) levels resulting in 3 dB decrements were derived by transformed linear regression. These L(3) levels were plotted as a function of f(3) to construct STCs. When f(3) is represented on an octave scale, STCs were similar in shape across f(2)

Abnormal visual motion processing in schizophrenia: a review of research progress.

Motion processing represents a perceptual domain in which dynamic visual information is encoded to support the perception of movement. Research over the last decade has found a variety of abnormalities in the processing of motion information in schizophrenia. The abnormalities span from discrimination of basic motion features (such as speed) to integration of spatially distributed motion signals (such as coherent motion). Motion processing involves visual signals across space and time and thus presents a special opportunity to examine how spatial and temporal information is integrated in the v

Growth of suppression in humans based on distortion-product otoacoustic emission measurements.

Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were used to describe suppression growth in normal-hearing humans. Data were collected at eight f(2) frequencies ranging from 0.5 to 8 kHz for L(2) levels ranging from 10 to 60 dB sensation level. For each f(2) and L(2) combination, suppression was measured for nine or eleven suppressor frequencies (f(3)) whose levels varied from -20 to 85 dB sound pressure level (SPL). Suppression grew nearly linearly when f(3) ≈ f(2), grew more rapidly for f(3) < f(2), and grew more slowly for f(3) > f(2). These results are consistent with physiological and m

Line bisection in left neglect: the importance of starting right.

When marking the subjective midpoint of a horizontal line, patients with left unilateral neglect typically deviate rightward. Different accounts of this pattern of performance refer either to a biased competition between the two hemi-segments of the line, with the right part being subjectively perceived as longer than the left part, or to a distortion of a cognitive representation of space, with spatial coordinates progressively relaxing from the right to the left. These accounts make different predictions about the role of the right part of the line, which is crucial in the biased competition

Masking-level differences in older adults: the effect of the level of the masking noise.

In Experiment 1, masking-level differences (MLDs) for a 500-Hz tone at five masker levels were obtained from younger and older adults. For both age groups, there were no reliable increases in MLD once the spectrum level of the masker exceeded 27 dB SPL. MLDs were larger for younger than for older adults over the range of masker levels tested. In Experiment 2, the levels of both the signal and the masker in one ear were attenuated by either 15 or 30 dB relative to their level in the other ear, which was fixed at a spectrum level of 47 dB SPL. MLDs for both age groups declined with increasing IA

Eye movement evidence for defocused attention in dysphoria--a perceptual span analysis.

The defocused attention hypothesis (von Hecker and Meiser, 2005) assumes that negative mood broadens attention, whereas the analytical rumination hypothesis (Andrews and Thompson, 2009) suggests a narrowing of the attentional focus with depression. We tested these conflicting hypotheses by directly measuring the perceptual span in groups of dysphoric and control subjects, using eye tracking. In the moving window paradigm, information outside of a variable-width gaze-contingent window was masked during reading of sentences. In measures of sentence reading time and mean fixation duration, dyspho

Event-related brain potential markers of visual and auditory perception: A useful tool for brain computer interface systems.

OBJECTIVE: A majority of BCI systems, enabling communication with patients with locked-in syndrome, are based on electroencephalogram (EEG) frequency analysis (e.g., linked to motor imagery) or P300 detection. Only recently, the use of event-related brain potentials (ERPs) has received much attention, especially for face or music recognition, but neuro-engineering research into this new approach has not been carried out yet. The aim of this study was to provide a variety of reliable ERP markers of visual and auditory perception for the development of new and more complex mind-reading systems f

Rapid orthographic and delayed phonological processing: ERP and oscillatory evidence from masked priming in Korean.

A central question in visual word recognition concerns whether orthographic and phonological codes are coordinated sequentially or in parallel during lexical access. Korean Hangul, an alpha-syllabic writing system with morphophonemic spelling principles, allows independent manipulation of orthographic and phonological syllable overlap. In a masked priming lexical decision task with EEG (N= 30), we contrasted orthographically identical primes (e.g., 식-식량), phonologically overlapping primes (e.g., 싱-식량), and unrelated primes. Event-related potentials and time-frequency representations (theta: 4-

Effects of Task-Irrelevant Talker Identity and Continuity on Spatial Selective Attention Under Interruption.

Task-irrelevant features can impact formation of auditory objects and influence the effectiveness of selective attention, including the buildup of attention over time. Using a previously established paradigm exploring the effects of random interruptions on spatial selective attention, this study explores how the task-irrelevant feature of talker identity impacts the buildup of spatial attention and whether it alters the impact of interruptions. Participants performed a sequence recall task in which participants were presented with two competing syllable sequences coming from different spatial

Impact of mask use on facial emotion recognition in individuals with subclinical social anxiety: an eye-tracking study.

Previous studies suggested that social anxiety is associated with interpretation bias, theory of mind deficit, and eye gaze avoidance when identifying facial emotions. We tested the hypothesis that socially anxious individuals would be more affected by mask use during facial emotion recognition. 88 healthy undergraduates with various levels of social anxiety were invited. Participants judged the emotions of masked and unmasked facial expressions. Eye Movement Analysis with Hidden Markov Models was used to analyze participants' eye movement patterns during the task. Potential confounders includ

The Influence of Speech Material, Intelligibility, and Masker Type on the Pupil Dilation Response in Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: The pupil dilation response is often used as a physiological measure of listening effort. One way to manipulate listening effort is to manipulate intelligibility. Only a few studies assessed the relationship between intelligibility and the pupil dilation response in cochlear implant (CI) users. Those studies did not consistently replicate the effects of intelligibility on the pupil dilation response evoked by sentence recognition in noise as observed in individuals with typical hearing or hard of hearing. Therefore, this study examined the effects of intelligibility on the pupil di

Reduced thalamic activity in ADHD under ABR forward masking conditions.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common chronic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, overactivity, and/or impulsiveness. The prevalence of ADHD varies in different settings and there have been voices raised to call for more objective measures in order to avoid over- and underdiagnosing of ADHD. Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is a method where click shaped sounds evoke potentials that are recorder from electrodes on the skull of a patient. The aim of this study was to explore possible alterations in the ABR of 29 patients with ADHD compare

Pattern Perception in Quiet and at Different Signal to Noise Ratio in Children with Learning Disability.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess pattern perception at different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in children with learning disability (LD) and typically developing children. The first objective of this study was to estimate the identification scores in quiet and at different SNR (0 dB SNR and -5 dB SNR) in children with LD and to compare the result with the typically developing children. The second objective of the study was to estimate identification scores for words differing in syllable length (monosyllable, bisyllable, and trisyllable) for both the groups of children with LD and typicall

Contralateral efferent reflex effects on threshold and suprathreshold psychoacoustical tuning curves at low and high frequencies.

Medial olivocochlear efferent neurons can control cochlear frequency selectivity and may be activated in a reflexive manner by contralateral sounds. The present study investigated the significance of the contralateral medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) on human psychoacoustical tuning curves (PTCs), a behavioral correlate of cochlear tuning curves. PTCs were measured using forward masking in the presence and in the absence of a contralateral white noise, assumed to elicit the MOCR. To assess MOCR effects on apical and basal cochlear regions over a wide range of sound levels, PTCs were measured

Interocular suppression in normal and amblyopic vision: spatio-temporal properties.

We measured the properties of interocular suppression in strabismic amblyopes and compared these to dichoptic masking in binocularly normal observers. We used a dichoptic version of the well-established probed-sinewave paradigm that measured sensitivity to a brief target stimulus (one of four letters to be discriminated) in the amblyopic eye at different times relative to a suppression-inducing mask in the fixing eye. This was done using both sinusoidal steady state and transient approaches. The suppression-inducing masks were either modulations of luminance or contrast (full field, just overl

A new method of calculating auditory excitation patterns and loudness for steady sounds.

A new method for calculating auditory excitation patterns and loudness for steady sounds is described. The method is based on a nonlinear filterbank in which each filter is the sum of a broad passive filter and a sharp active filter. All filters have a rounded-exponential shape. For each center frequency (CF), the gain of the active filter is controlled by the output of the passive filter. The parameters of the model were derived from large sets of previously published notched-noise masking data obtained from human subjects. Excitation patterns derived using the new filterbank include the effe

Contribution of consonant versus vowel information to sentence intelligibility for young normal-hearing and elderly hearing-impaired listeners.

The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of information provided by vowels versus consonants to sentence intelligibility in young normal-hearing (YNH) and typical elderly hearing-impaired (EHI) listeners. Sentences were presented in three conditions, unaltered or with either the vowels or the consonants replaced with speech shaped noise. Sentences from male and female talkers in the TIMIT database were selected. Baseline performance was established at a 70 dB SPL level using YNH listeners. Subsequently EHI and YNH participants listened at 95 dB SPL. Participants listened to ea

Attentional blink deficits observed in dyslexia depend on task demands.

The attentional blink (AB) refers to a deficit in the ability to identify a second target following a first target when both appear randomly within a rapid sequence of distractor items. The AB of five adults with dyslexia (ADys) was compared with that of a group of normal adult readers. Two tasks were completed which differed in the conceptual category of the target items (a red digit or letter) relative to the distractor items (all black digits). In the digit condition, all ADys cases showed a longer AB compared to the control group. In the letter condition, all participants showed improvemen

Binaural hearing, atresia, and the masking dilemma.

A masking dilemma occurs when energy from a non-test ear crosses over the head to a test ear. In cases of bilateral atresia, obtaining thresholds on the poorer ear is problematic. Near threshold, however, sufficient ear-bone isolation exists to test with validity but not so much above threshold, even for the ultra-high (> 10 kHz) frequencies. This aspect of the bone audiogram should not be overlooked. We suggest two uses of binaural bone conduction hearing to help resolve the dilemma--one an auditory brainstem response variation, the other a high-frequency lateralization procedure. Both are al

Limiting high-frequency hearing aid gain in listeners with and without suspected cochlear dead regions.

The purpose of this study was to compare threshold-matched ears with and without suspected cochlear dead regions in terms of the speech perception benefit from high-frequency amplification. The Threshold Equalizing Noise Test (TEN) was used to assess the presence of dead regions. Speech perception was measured while participants were wearing a hearing aid fit to approximate DSL[i/o] targets. Consonant identification of nonsense vowel-consonant-vowel combinations was measured in quiet using a forced-choice procedure. Phoneme recognition was measured at signal-to-noise ratios ranging from 0 to +
