Examination of cognitive appraisals, irrational beliefs, and challenge and threat evaluations in the prediction of tournament affective states and performance of competitive elite Indian golfers.

Researchers have intimated that cognitions and emotions can change in the lead up to important events. However, previous research has adopted atemporal cross-sectional designs, making it challenging to understand how cognitions and emotions unfold in the lead up to a competition. In the current study, we extended previous research by examining the temporal patterns of cognitive appraisals, irrational beliefs, and challenge and threat evaluations in predicting pre-competitive affective states (hedonic balance and anxiety) in the lead up to an actual competition, among competitive elite Indian g

Anxiety and the severity of Tension-Type Headache mediate the relation between headache presenteeism and workers' productivity.

The primary objective of this study was to explore the mechanisms and conditions whereby Tension-Type Headache (TTH) presenteeism relates to health-related loss of productivity as a result of both reduced physical and mental health. To this end, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to conduct a secondary data analysis of a randomized clinical trial involving 78 Tension-type Headache (TTH) patients. The results showed that TTH presenteeism did not directly relate to health-related loss of productivity, either due to physical, or mental health problems. However, through anxiety-state, TTH

Frequency domain source localization shows state-dependent diazepam effects in 47-channel EEG.

The topic of this study was to evaluate state-dependent effects of diazepam on the frequency characteristics of 47-channel spontaneous EEG maps. A novel method, the FFT-Dipole-Approximation (Lehmann and Michel, 1990), was used to study effects on the strength and the topography of the maps in the different frequency bands. Map topography was characterized by the 3-dimensional location of the equivalent dipole source and map strength was defined as the spatial standard deviation (the Global Field Power) of the maps of each frequency point. The Global Field Power can be considered as a measure o

Caffeine moderately antagonizes the effects of triazolam and zopiclone on the psychomotor performance of healthy subjects.

To determine whether caffeine antagonizes the decremental effects of triazolam and zopiclone on human performance, oral single doses of 0.250 mg triazolam, 7.5 mg zopiclone, or respective placebos, with and without 300 mg caffeine, were given to parallel groups of student volunteers in two double-blind studies. Objective tests and subjective visual analogue ratings were done at baseline and 30 min. and 90 min. after the intake. In Study I, triazolam produced drowsiness at 30 min. but did not differ from the placebo in other tests. Caffeine induced alerting effects in various tests and differed

[Effect of psychotropic drugs on vigilance and motor performances].

This review paper deals with the impact of psychotropic drugs on vigilance, awakening and motricity. Antidepressants can be divided into 3 categories, depending on the subject's awakening: sedatives with a strong anticholinergic component, compounds devoid of positive or negative impact on cognition and stimulating antidepressants. The principal effect of lithium is to lengthen the reaction time. Taken acutely, neuroleptics produce alterations of fine motor gestures, but when taken chronically they spare the functioning of cognition. Benzodiazepines act on vigilance in various ways, depending

Testing theoretical processes that maintain paediatric social anxiety: A comparison between children and adolescents with social anxiety disorder, other mental disorders, and non-clinical controls.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric social anxiety disorder (SoAD) responds poorly to treatment. Improved understanding of potential psychological maintaining processes may indicate fruitful directions to improve treatment outcomes. The current study compared self-reported psychological processes and state anxiety in response to two social tasks experienced by children and adolescents with SoAD against comparison samples. METHODS: 641 children and adolescents aged 6-17 years (Mage = 9.45 yr; 47.6% girls) engaged in a brief, impromptu speech and a social discussion with a confederate. Participants included

Development and validation of the socio-evaluative N-back task to investigate the impact of acute social stress on working memory.

Impaired working memory in response to social-evaluative stress might be a central cognitive mechanism underlying the persistence of mental health difficulties such as social anxiety. To investigate this, we developed the Socio-evaluative N-back Task (SENT), which can measure the impact of acute socio-evaluative stress on working memory (WM) performance. Moreover, we tested the SENT in a stratified sample with high (HSA) and low socially anxious (LSA) individuals (HSA = 30, LSA = 27, N = 57). Of the highly anxious individuals, thirteen were diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD). The soc

Modeling Short-Term Symptom Changes and Behavioral Subtypes of Depression and Anxiety in the General Population: Observational Study Using Smartphone Data.

BACKGROUND: Smartphone-based digital phenotyping has emerged as a promising approach for monitoring mental health using passive behavioral data. Prior studies have linked smartphone-derived features to depression and anxiety severity; however, knowledge regarding whether short-term changes in symptoms can be captured using passive smartphone data in general population samples remains limited, as does the understanding of how such findings should be interpreted vis-à-vis behavioral patterns and demographic variability. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to model short-term changes in depression and a

Enhancing the Efficacy of Cognitive Bias Modification for Social Anxiety.

Cognitive bias modification for interpretation (CBM-I) is a promising treatment modality for social anxiety disorder, but effect sizes are relatively small across investigations (Hallion & Ruscio, 2011). Additionally, the extent to which CBM-I impacts other cognitive, emotional, and behavioral outcomes is unclear. This study investigated whether two empirically supported treatment components for anxiety disorders, imaginal exposure (IE) and relaxation, augment the effects of CBM-I and increase the extent to which the effects of CBM-I generalize to behavioral and affective outcomes. We randomly

Breath-hold time and anxiety-related vulnerability: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Altered interoceptive processing and reduced tolerance to aversive bodily sensations are core features of anxiety disorders. Maximal voluntary breath-holding time (mvBHT) has been proposed as a simple, objective behavioral index of interoceptive tolerance. This PRISMA-guided systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated mvBHT as a performance-based marker of interoceptive tolerance in anxiety by examining whether this measure differentiates adults with anxiety disorders (AD) from healthy controls (HC), quantifying its associations with trait and state anxiety, and examining study-level moderat

Oxytocin and social functioning.

Social anxiety is a form of anxiety characterized by continuous fear of one or more social or performance situations. Although multiple treatment modalities (cognitive behavioral therapy, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors/selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, benzodiazepines) exist for social anxiety, they are effective for only 60% to 70% of patients. Thus, researchers have looked for other candidates for social anxiety treatment. Our review focuses on the peptide oxytocin as a potential therapeutic option for individuals with social anxiety. Animal research both in nonprimates
