Indirect immunofluorescence was used for the localization of the primary collagens, fibronectin and laminin. Specimens were extracted from untreated teeth with periapical lesions from patients 20 to 30 years of age. An histological examination enabled the differentiation of granulomas and cysts, and 5 microns sections were used for the indirect immunofluorescence procedure. Antibodies against Type I, Type III, and Type V collagen and for fibronectin and laminin were obtained from glycoproteins of human cells. The antibody against Type IV collagen was prepared from Type IV collagen of beef reti

In the present study the "checkerboard" DNA-DNA hybridization technique was used to identify bacteria in periapical endodontic lesions of as … re detected in more than 60% of the lesions from both groups. Also, P. endodontalis was abundant in periapical tissue. The data supported the idea that following a marginal incision, bacteria from the periodontal pocket might reach the underlying tissues by surgeon-released bacteremia. The study provided solid evidence that bacteria invade the periapical tissue of …

The periapical tissues of adult teeth of monkeys were examined histologically after root canal treatment with calcium hydroxide. Healing, as evidenced by complete apical closure with a hard tissue bridge and an inflammation-free periodontal ligament, occurred more frequently where canals were instrumented 1 mm short of the apex. Overinstrumented canals exhibited a significantly decreased incidence of apical closure.

AIM: To evaluate the immunoexpression of tryptase, MMP-9 and MMP-13 in periapical lesions, correlating them with the type of lesion, intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate and thickness of the epithelial lining.
METHODOLOGY: Twenty periapical granulomas (PGs), twenty radicular cysts (RCs) and twenty residual radicular cysts (RRCs) were submitted to immunohistochemical analysis using antitryptase, anti-MMP-9 and anti-MMP-13 antibodies. Immunoexpression of MMP-9 and MMP-13 was quantitatively evaluated both in the connective tissue of all lesions and in the epithelial lining of RCs and RRCs. T

INTRODUCTION: Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) and their receptors (VEGFRs) are key players in vasculogenesis and are also involved in pathologic conditions with bone destruction. Vasculogenesis is critical for disease progression, and bone resorption is a hallmark of apical periodontitis. However, the localization of VEGFs and VEGFRs and their gene signaling pathways in human apical periodontitis have not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this study was to localize VEGFs and VEGFRs and analyze their gene expression as well as signaling pathways in human periapical lesions.

Dental mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play an essential role in the development of immature permanent teeth. Bacterial infection of the pulp and periapical tissues of immature permanent teeth, the associated oral pathogens, and their virulence factors affect the viability, proliferation, differentiation, and cytokine secretion of MSCs. Bacteria and virulence factors can also trigger an inflammatory response that induces pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion and destroys odontogenic MSCs in the pulp and periapical region, negatively affecting the development of immature permanent teeth. The presen…

Food particles get frequently impacted in the oral cavity in varying sites. Oral pulse granuloma develops as a consequence of implantation of food particles of plant or vegetable origin in oral tissues. The lesion might be central or peripheral. It has a differing histological picture and may be confused with many other lesions including parasitic infection. Impacted vegetable matter is rarely associated with multiple myeloma, bacterial and fungal osteomyelitis, and squamous cell carcinoma and has never been reported in the literature before. Thus, in the present case series, we have discussed

Pulp exposure due to traumatic injuries in the anterior permanent teeth of adolescents is a common occurrence. A vital permanent maxillary incisor with complex crown fracture and pulp exposure was treated by partial pulpotomy and assessed clinically through pulpal sensitivity tests and radiographically for periapical healing. Partial pulpotomy consisted of pulp tissue removal to a depth of only 1 to 2 mm, then capping the pulpal wound with calcium hydroxide, lining with resin-modified glass-ionomer cement, and restoration with resin composite. At each recall (7, 15, 21, 50, 90, 150, and 250 da

Presence of cholesterol clefts in apical periodontitis lesions is a common histopathological observation. However, a potential aetiological association of cholesterol crystals to non-resolving apical periodontitis lesions after endodontic treatment has been suggested only recently. This article is an attempt to explain the biological basis for the inability of body cells to eliminate the local accumulation of cholesterol crystals, and to consolidate available clinical and experimental data in support of the view that massive accumulation of cholesterol crystals in inflamed periapical tissues c…

External root resorption (ERR) is often a complication of traumatic injury to the teeth. Traditionally, external inflammatory root resorption is treated with calcium hydroxide. The outcome of ERR, especially replacement resorption, is unpredictable. The purpose of the present case report was to describe regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) for 1 replanted avulsed tooth with severe external root resorption and root perforation (tooth #9) and 1 extruded tooth (tooth #8). A 9-year-old girl was referred for the treatment of teeth #8 and #9 4 months after the initial trauma. Clinical examinati

Apical lesions are diseases of infectious origin that can cause destruction of the surrounding periapical tissue, including bone tissue and periodontal ligaments, resulting in the loss of the affected teeth. Currently, the microorganisms present in pulp and apical disease are mostly studied as bacteria. However, in recent years, interest has been aroused in the study of viruses that could be present in apical lesions, and how these could affect the progression of disease. In the present study, we conducted a systematic review of the literature to evaluate and synthesize the scientific evidence…

BACKGROUND: In equine dentistry periodontal diseases, especially periapical inflammation, are frequently occurring problems. Anachoresis is believed to be the most common cause for the development of such disorders. Nevertheless, there is still no substantiated explanation why settlement of pathogen microorganisms occurs in equine periodontal tissues. It is expected that excessive strains and stresses occurring in the periodontal ligament (PDL) during the horse's chewing cycle might be a predisposing factor. In this study this assumption was examined by finite element (FE) analyses on virtual

This report describes a rare case of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma initially presenting with clinical features resembling an endodontic lesion. A 15-year-old male presented with progressive right maxillary swelling initially treated as a dental abscess. Radiographic examination revealed a poorly defined destructive lesion associated with the apices of teeth #14-18, exhibiting expansion and destruction of the maxillary sinus walls. Additional imaging demonstrated a contrast-enhancing soft tissue mass with extensive local invasion. Histopathological examination confirmed alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma th

The present case describes the successful healing of a periapical lesion associated with the left maxillary lateral incisor (# 22, Federation Dentaire Internationale) having a type 3b dens invaginatus tooth morphology. The treatment was complicated by the presence of blunderbuss root apex and large periapical lesion (>10 mm) with through and through bone defect (Bucco palatal cortical bone perforation, Von Arx Type 1b). An adolescent boy reported palatal swelling and pus discharge in relation to tooth #22. A thorough clinical and radiographic examination revealed tooth #22 as having a type 3b

INTRODUCTION: Ossifying fibroma mimicking chronic apical periodontitis is extremely rare. This report describes a case of ossifying fibroma located in the periapical region of the mandibular right canine that was misdiagnosed as chronic apical periodontitis.
METHODS: A 40-year-old woman complained of slight pain in the right anterior mandibular region without mucosal abnormalities or swelling. Radiographically, a well-circumscribed, unilocular, radiolucent lesion was observed that was located in the periapical region of the mandibular right canine, which presented an endodontically treated ro
