Many studies have been conducted to examine whether Caesarean Section (CS) or vaginal birth (VB) was optimal for better maternal and neonata … nd neonatal intensive care unit admission but significantly decreased odds of fresh stillbirth, and perinatal death. However, since the information on justification for mode of delivery (MOD) were not available, our results of the potential benefits and harms of CS should be carefully considered when deciding MOD in preterm births.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mortality according to birth weight has an inverse J-pattern. Our aim was to estimate the influence of familial factors on this pattern, applying a cohort sibling design. We focused on excess mortality among macrosomic infants (>2 SD above the mean) and hypothesized that the birth weight-mortality association could be explained by confounding shared family factors. We also estimated how the participant's deviation from mean sibling birth weight influenced the association.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We included 1 925 929 singletons, born term or post-term to mothers with more

Perinatal deaths (fetal or infant deaths from the 28th week of pregnancy up to the seventh day after birth) occur as a result of adverse conditions during pregnancy, labor, and delivery, or in the first few days of life. Placental malaria infection is known to increase the risk of delivery of a low birth weight infant, thus, potentially increasing the risk of perinatal and infant mortality. To better understand the relationship among the adverse events in pregnancy, including placental malaria infection, adverse conditions in labor, and birth weight to perinatal mortality, we investigated the …

BACKGROUND: Inter-pregnancy interval has been identified as a potentially modifiable risk factor to improve perinatal outcomes. We examined … pregnancies contributed by 570 145 women with a mean age of 28·4 years (SD 5·96). The overall HR of perinatal death was 2·72 (95% CI 2·52-2·93) times higher for an inter-pregnancy interval of less than 6 months compared with the WHO recommended optimal waiting time of 18-23 months following a livebirth. Overall HRs followed a context-related pattern, with the hig …

Multiple pregnancies pose a high risk of morbidity and mortality in both mothers and infants; thus, obtaining reliable information based on a large population is essential to improve management. We used the maternal and child health statistics, which are published annually, from the database of the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. The data obtained were aggregated in 5-year intervals, and we used them to analyze the proportion of the number of births for each week of pregnancy to the total of each singleton and multiple pregnancy. For perinatal health indicators (perinatal mortality, st

Over the past 30 years, the perinatal mortality rate (PMR) in Australia has been reduced to almost a quarter of that observed in the 1970s. To a large extent, this decline in the PMR has been driven by a reduction in neonatal mortality. Stillbirth rates have, however, remained relatively unchanged, and stillbirth rates for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander mothers have remained approximately twice that for non-Indigenous women over the last 10 years. The causes for this difference remain to be fully established. Fetal autopsy is the single most important investigative tool to determine the

BACKGROUND: In high-income countries, national mortality audits are associated with improved quality of care, but there has been no previous systematic review of perinatal audit in low- and middle-income settings.
OBJECTIVES: To present a systematic review of facility-based perinatal mortality audit in low- and middle-income countries, and review information regarding community audit.
RESULTS: Ten low-quality evaluations with mortality outcome data were identified. Meta-analysis of 7 before-and-after studies indicated a reduction in perinatal mortality of 30% (95% confidence interval, 21%-38

87 perinatal deaths which occurred out of 1484 births in a rural area of Northern Nigeria over a 9 month period were reviewed. The perinatal mortality rate was 58.6 per 1000 births. Babies born to very young adolescent mothers aged between 10-14 years had the highest perinatal mortality of 375 per 1000 births. Statistically significant relationships were also established between perinatal mortality and parity, educational status of the mother and birth weight. The leading cause of perinatal death was birth trauma which accounted for 48% of all perinatal deaths. Strategies for the reduction of …

Perinatal mortality rates are an important indicator of the overall obstetric and neonatal services available, and the socio-economic status of the community. These rates are also used to identify shortcomings in services provided. The aim of this study was to identify clinical causative factors of perinatal deaths (supported by post mortem evidence where possible). This was a prospective descriptive study. The total number of deliveries and perinatal deaths over a 6-month period were recorded and clinico-demographic data noted. Post mortem examination information, if available, was also recor…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of nationwide perinatal mortality audits in the Netherlands.
STUDY DESIGN: Over a one-year period, data for all cases of perinatal mortality were collected. Six perinatal audit panels of professionals within perinatal care investigated and classified causes of death and identified the presence of substandard care factors (SSF).
RESULTS: Out of 22,189 newborns, 228 cases of perinatal mortality were audited. Placental pathology, congenital anomalies and preterm birth were the main causes of perinatal death. SSF by caregivers were identified in 72 cases…

BACKGROUND: the perinatal mortality (PM) represents a partial expression of a developing country and its health programs. The aim was to determine the rate of PM in a second level hospital that lacks the support of a perinatal care unit, and to help with some epidemiological elements to plan strategies to give a better care in the perinatal stage.
METHODS: we collected all records of deaths within the parameters of perinatal death. DATA INCLUDED: maternal age, prenatal history, cause of the perinatal death and birth control information.
RESULTS: out of 117 deaths, 59.8 % were in the late fet…

This study investigated the factors associated with perinatal mortality in eastern Sudan from 2010 to 2011. Among 808 deliveries, there were 15 pairs of twins, giving 823 babies at risk of perinatal deaths. There were 761 live births and 62 perinatal deaths. Of the 62 perinatal deaths, 25 (40.3%) were stillbirths and 37 (59.7%) were early neonatal deaths. The stillbirth risk, early neonatal mortality risk and perinatal mortality rate were 30.9 per 1000 pregnancies, 48.6 per 1000 live births and 75.3 per 1000 births, respectively. In the logistic regression model, home delivery [odds ratio (OR)…

INTRODUCTION: Tanzania has one of the highest burdens of perinatal mortality, with a higher risk among urban versus rural women. To understand the characteristics of perinatal mortality in urban health facilities, study objectives were: I. To assess the incidence of perinatal deaths in public health facilities in Dar es Salaam and classify these into a) pre-facility stillbirths (absence of fetal heart tones on admission to the study health facilities) and b) intra-facility perinatal deaths before discharge; and II. To identify determinants of perinatal deaths by comparing each of the two group…
