Development of a novel atrophic non-union model in rabbits: A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The currently available atrophic non-union models rely on wide segmental excision of bone diaphysis to impede the process of healing but lack resemblance to the clinical scenario. The present study focused on developing an in vivo model of atrophic non-union fracture in rabbit radius that can replicate the clinical scenario. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The atrophic non-union fracture model was developed by creating a 10 mm segmental bone defect in the radial diaphysis of five adult New Zealand White rabbits. The periosteum (2 mm) of the cut bone ends was cauterized using electr…

Estimation of bony orbit depth for optimal selection of the injection technique to correct the tear trough and palpebromalar groove.

BACKGROUND: Different techniques have been used for filler injection of the tear trough and palpebromalar groove. Most patients report good results; however, some patients here experienced variable degrees of side effects. OBJECTIVE: To assess if previous estimation of the bony orbit depth could affect the choice between bolus and serial puncture technique, and thereby the procedure outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 32 patients, the periosteum depth was measured by using a 28 G needle at 2 points: Point A at the midpupillary line and Point B at the outer canthus. The bolus technique was per…

Primary Extraskeletal Osteosarcoma in the Anterior Mediastinum: A Case Report and Review.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) is a malignant soft tissue neoplasm producing osteoid, without any continuity with the bone or periosteum. Primary ESOS presenting in the mediastinum is an extremely rare, yet aggressive malignant tumor associated with a poor prognosis. We report a case of primary ESOS arising from the thymus in a 63-year-old male patient.

The use of bonewax to control massive presacral bleeding.

Massive presacral bleeding during retroperitoneal resection is unusual, and can be difficult to control. We describe a technique for managing this complication whereby bonewax is pushed through the presacral fascia and periosteum directly into the bleeding point in the sacrum, followed by abdominal packing. This maneuver proved successful for achieving hemostasis when we recently encountered this intraoperative complication.

Periosteal suspension of the lower eyelid and cheek following subciliary exposure of facial fractures.

Following craniofacial procedures that involve stripping of the periosteum and soft tissue over the zygomatic maxillary complex, descent of soft tissue with a decrease in anterior projection over the malar area and increase in fullness in the nasolabial fold have been seen to be a problem by these authors. Simple repositioning of the soft tissues to their normal anatomic position may be used to alleviate this problem.

Periosteal ganglion: a cause of cortical bone erosion.

Three cases of periosteal ganglia of long bones are presented. These lesions are produced by mucoid degeneration and cyst formation of the periosteum to produce external cortical erosion and reactive periosteal new bone. They are not associated with a soft tissue ganglion or an intraosseous lesion. They may radiologically mimic other periosteal lesions or soft tissue neoplasms which erode bone.

Bone marrow-derived vasculogenesis leads to scarless regeneration in deep wounds with periosteal defects.

Deep skin wounds with periosteal defects, frequently caused by traffic accidents or radical dissection, are refractory. Transplant surgery i … static materials in clinical practice, allowed the regeneration of heterogeneous tissues, including periosteum, skin, and skin appendages, when used as scaffolds in deep wounds with periosteal defects in rats. Bone marrow transplantation in rats revealed the mechanism by which the microenvironment provided by GS enabled bone marrow-derived cells (BMDCs) to f …

A rare case of fistula: nasocutaneous fistula.

A three-year-old male patient was brought to our clinic by his family with the complaint of a non-healing wound with discharge on his forehe … en the nose and the eye. A subcutaneous forehead flap without skin tissue was removed including the periosteum from the left part of forehead after excision of the fistula tract. The flap was transferred to the nasal dorsum and the component of the forehead flap including the periosteum was used for reconstruction of the nasal mucosa. The wound healed withou …

Kelly procedure for exstrophy or epispadias patients: Anatomical description of the pudendal neurovasculature.

INTRODUCTION: Adequate penile length in males with bladder exstrophy or epispadias is a major challenge. Kelly previously described a surgic … n the NVB and the area of separation between the crus and the ischiopubic ramus at the level of the periosteum. The insertion of the crus to the ischiopubic ramus is inferior lateral, whereas the NVB lies at a superior medial position. This anatomical relationship is best visualized when the dissection is carried out starting from the distal portion of the N …

Periosteal Osteosarcoma: Emerging Clinical Concepts, Evolving Treatment Options: A Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Periosteal osteosarcomas are rare bone tumors that comprise less than 2% of all bone malignancies. The tumor was previously thought to affect the diaphysis of long bones solely, but Recent case reports have demonstrated its existence in the clavicle, mandible, and scapula. RECENT FINDINGS: Several factors, including stage, grade, and medullary invasion primarily drive survival and recurrence of periosteal osteosarcomas. Related to its rarity, little data currently exists regarding optimum treatment strategies, including limb amputation, surgical resection, and chemotherapy

Physiological periostitis in a 2.5-month-old baby.

Periosteal reaction has different etiologies in early infancy. Physiological periostitis is a well-documented X-ray finding seen in both preterm and term babies aged between 1-6 months and can easily be misdiagnosed as child abuse or pathological periostitis. Here, we present a 2.5-month-old infant admitted with a history of fever, swollen right upper arm after vaccination and X-rays findings revealing periosteal reactions on both sides of the humeri, radii, tibiae and femora. Initial diagnosis was child abuse or congenital syphilis. Due to the normal physical findings and normal serological-b

Editorial Commentary: Shifting More Than Just the Anterior Capsulolabral Tissue-Changing the Outlook on the Surgical Outcomes of the Anterior Labroligamentous Periosteal Sleeve Avulsions Lesion.

Anterior labroligamentous periosteal sleeve avulsions, or "ALPSA" lesions, have been shown to have inferior clinical outcomes in prior literature, often attributed to their increased difficulty in restoration of anatomy at the time of surgery. A challenge to this notion may lie in adherence to specific surgical techniques that allow for restoration of native anatomy, leading to similar imaging and clinical outcomes in the treatment of anterior labroligamentous periosteal sleeve avulsions lesions as compared with standard Bankart tears. The keys to success include adequate visualization, libera

Doppler Ultrasonographic Anatomy of the Midline Nasal Dorsum.

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to identify a safe method for filler injection to prevent blood vessel damage, by means of checking the … e midline of the radix. The dorsal nasal artery was located within 1.2 mm from the perichondrium or periosteum in three patients in whom it was detected in the rhinion. CONCLUSIONS: When performing dorsal augmentation, the injection of filler into the preperiosteal layer in the rhinion region should be avoided for the prevention of vascular embolism. During …

Inverted periosteal flap: an alternative to the buccal advancement flap for tension-free, watertight closure.

The buccal advancement flap has been universally used in oral and maxillofacial surgery for closure of alveolar ridge incisions. It involves scoring of the buccal periosteum to enhance flap mobility and then stretching the buccal tissues medially (palatally or lingually) to obtain tension-free, watertight closure of a wound. Its applications have included, but have not been limited to, alveolar ridge augmentation procedures and closure of oral-antral communications. However, the buccal advancement flap technique has several major disadvantages. First, because the buccal flap is advanced cresta…

Contouring the aging neck with submandibular gland suspension.

Submandibular gland suspension, a procedure designed to complement surgical rejuvenation of the aging neck, uses largely blunt dissection and suspension to the mandibular periosteum to elevate the gland, improving neck contour without excision of submandibular gland tissue. Although there is an increase in operative time, the risk of intraoperative and postoperative bleeding problems is very low, and the authors report high patient satisfaction.

Compression of the ulnar nerve and spasm of the ulnar artery in Guyon's canal caused by a hypermobile pisiform bone.

We describe compression of the ulnar nerve at Guyon's canal caused by a hypermobile pisiform bone and associated with spasm of the ulnar artery. Treatment included excision of the pisiform bone, and repair of the flexor carpi ulnaris, hypothenar musculature, and periosteum. Postoperatively, the patient reported complete relief of symptoms, which had still been maintained at final follow-up one year later.
