Neuropathies secondary to tophus compression in gout patients are well known; however, limited data exist on other types of peripheral neuropathies (PN). Our aim was to describe PN frequency, characteristics, distribution, patterns, and associated factors in gout patients through clinical evaluation, a PN questionnaire, and nerve conduction studies (NCS). This cross-sectional descriptive study included consecutive gout patients (ACR/EULAR 2015 criteria) from our clinic. All underwent evaluation by Rheumatology and Rehabilitation departments, with IRB approval. Based on NCS, patients were categ

Hansen's disease induces hypertrophic neuropathy. Computed tomography was performed on ulnar, median, peroneal and tibial posterior nerves where there is clinically presumed lesion. The CT findings (diameter and density) have correlated well with intra-operative findings. The computed tomography is a reliable method to study peripheral nerve lesions in Hansen's disease patients.

PURPOSE: Diabetic polyneuropathy (PNP) is an important risk factor for foot ulcers. Diabetic dermopathy is more frequent in patients with diabetic neuropathy. We compared clinical and electrophysiological characteristics of PNP localizations/recurrences of foot ulcers, and diabetic dermopathy (DD) between sexes.
METHODS: Eighty-eight diabetic patients (44 men, 44 women) had an evaluation regarding detailed history of their diseases, lesion-related data, and clinical examination. Nerve conduction velocities (NCV), compound motor action potentials (CMAP), distal latencies (DL), and sensory nerv

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) causes permanent disabilities, such as foot drop. This condition affects the gait pattern, increasing the metabolic cost and risk of falling. Robotics with serious games has shown promising results in the gait rehabilitation context. This paper aims to analyze the effects of using the T-FLEX exoskeleton with (1) Automated Therapy (AT) and (2) Serious Game Therapy (SGT) in two ABI patients. Each participant completed six assisted sessions for each strategy. Results showed that AT increases the user-robot interaction torque by 10% for the first patient and 70% for the

Gluteal compartment syndrome (CS) secondary to the superior gluteal artery (SGA) injury and pseudoaneurysm formation is a very rare condition. When it does occur, it usually manifests with acute and life-threatening hemorrhage resulting in early hypov-olemic changes. Delayed presentation of the gluteal CS (GCS) after trauma has been described in the literature seldom and these cases were demonstrated with sciatic nerve palsy, hemodynamic instability, decreased hemoglobin levels, increasing buttock pain, and a large gluteal hematoma. In this report, we present a case of GCS presenting with the

CASE: We present the case of a 71-year-old man with right knee osteoarthritis (OA) and a varus deformity who developed a progressive common peroneal nerve palsy that resolved after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). After decades of knee pain, the patient gradually developed a foot drop as well as numbness and paresthesias over the foot dorsum during the course of 1 month. The patient underwent TKA and within 6 weeks postoperatively had complete resolution of the peroneal nerve symptoms.
CONCLUSION: A progressive common peroneal palsy in advanced varus knee OA may resolve after a properly aligned

PURPOSE: A common peroneal nerve (CPN) palsy has been reported to complicate knee dislocations in 5-40 % of patients. Patients who suffer from a persistent foot drop have significantly worse functional outcomes. Reports on prognostic factors for nerve recovery or treatment-specific functional outcomes remain sparse in the literature.
METHODS: Two independent reviewers completed a search of Medline, Embase, PubMed and the Cochrane Library from 1946 to present. Motor strength was determined using the Medical Research Council (MRC) grading system or an equivalent description. A functional recove

A 72-year-old Japanese male developed disseminated herpes zoster and could not easily walk due to right drop foot and pain. He soon developed numbness and pain on the left side of his face, and noticed difficulty closing his left eye. The left angle of his mouth dropped. The patient was diagnosed as having a double mononeuropathy (a left facial nerve paresis and a right peroneal nerve paresis) following disseminated herpes zoster. Given that the patient was elderly and had diabetes mellitus, the patient appeared to be an immunocompromised host. We also describe other rare complications of herp

We investigated the pathological appearance of acute inflammation and its role in the development of demyelination in reperfused rat sciatic, tibial, and peroneal nerves after a 5-hour period of near-complete ischemia. Polymorphonuclear neutrophil migration was seen early in the endoneurial lesion. After 18 hours of reperfusion, there was maximal intercellular adhesion molecule-1 expression on endoneurial vessels, and polymorphonuclear neutrophil accumulation was then prominent, reaching a peak 24 hours after reperfusion. Endoneurial mononuclear macrophages increased nearly fourfold after 48 t

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) in patients with painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (PDPN).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-two patients underwent permanent SCS implantation and completed a 6-month post-operative follow-up. The primary endpoint was patient amputation rate, and secondary endpoints included Quality of Life (QOL LC V2.0) scale, pain visual analogue scale (VAS), limb nerve conduction velocity, latency and amplitude, and vibration perception threshold (VPT).
RESULTS: In patients with diabetic peripheral

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common surgical procedure aimed at relieving pain and restoring function in patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis. However, up to 25% of patients report persistent postoperative pain, which remains a major clinical challenge. While mechanical and biological causes are well-documented, neuropathic pain due to dynamic nerve compression is often overlooked, particularly involving the common peroneal and saphenous nerves.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to highlight the role of dynamic nerve compressions in persistent post-TKA pain and propose an enh

As superficial peroneal nerve (S-PN) entrapment neuropathy is relatively rare, it may be an elusive clinical entity. For decompression surgery addressing idiopathic S-PN entrapment, narrow-area decompression may be insufficient and long-area decompression along the S-PN from the peroneus longus muscle (PLM) to the peroneal nerve exit site may be required. To render it is less invasive, we performed S-PN neurolysis in a combined microscope/endoscope procedure. We report our surgical procedure and clinical outcomes. We microsurgically decompressed the affected S-PN under local anesthesia without

BACKGROUND: Adopting compensatory walking mechanisms by people with foot drop due to traumatic injury of the peroneal nerve costs altered gait kinetics and kinematics. Therefore, orthoses are generally recommended to minimize the deployment of compensatory gait mechanisms.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the immediate effects of a low-cost, Neoprene Ankle-Foot Orthosis (NAFO) and the thermoplastic ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) with the shoe-only condition on kinematics and kinetics of gait of people with foot drop following peroneal nerve traumatic injury.
METHODS: Seven people with foot drop due to

BACKGROUND: Intraneural Ewing sarcoma (ES) was first described in 1918 by Stout in a tumor of the ulnar nerve. These tumors are in the category of ES family of tumors, together with ES of bone, extraosseous ES, and primitive neuroectodermal tumor. ES typically occurs in the second decade of life; only 20% of cases affect elder people. The most frequently involved sites are the craniospinal vault and cauda equina, while the peripheral nerve location is extremely rare (only 11 cases mentioned in the literature to date).
CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report documents a rare case of a 46-year-old w
