Hepatitis A Person-to-Person Outbreaks: Epidemiology, Morbidity Burden, and Factors Associated With Hospitalization-Multiple States, 2016-2019.

BACKGROUND: Since 2016, the United States has experienced person-to-person hepatitis A outbreaks unprecedented in the vaccine era. The proportion of cases hospitalized in these outbreaks exceeds historical national surveillance data. METHODS: We described the epidemiology, characterized the reported increased morbidity, and identified factors associated with hospitalization during the outbreaks by reviewing a 10% random sample of outbreak-associated hepatitis A cases in Kentucky, Michigan, and West Virginia-3 heavily affected states. We calculated descriptive statistics and conducted age-adju

Exploring readiness to patient-centered goal-setting in stroke Rehabilitation-A qualitative study.

PURPOSE: This study aims to explore perspectives of stroke survivors, caregivers, and physiotherapists on goal-setting in stroke rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative study included in-depth interviews with 15 stroke survivors and seven caregivers and four focus groups with 16 physiotherapists. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: An overarching theme "Readiness to patient-centered goal-setting in physiotherapy" emerged, reflecting goal-setting as a clinician-led process with limited involvement of stroke survivors and caregivers. Four themes were ide

Opportunities to inform German residents about the possibility of skin cancer screening and to inform stakeholders to take appropriate actions: A qualitative approach.

BACKGROUND: The national skin cancer screening (SCS) was introduced in Germany in 2008. However, public awareness and participation rates remain low. There are no campaigns or target group-specific invitation strategies for SCS yet. Thus, our aim was to derive potential suggestions on how to best inform German residents about the possibility of SCS. METHODS: Semi-structured, individual interviews with male and female German residents aged ≥35 years were conducted in Erlangen (Germany) to explore opportunities on raising awareness of SCS. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and a

Population Genomic Screening for Genetic Etiologies of Neurodevelopmental/Psychiatric Disorders Demonstrates Personal Utility and Positive Participant Responses.

Genomic variants that cause neurodevelopmental/psychiatric disorders (NPD) are relatively prevalent and highly penetrant. This study aimed to understand adults' immediate responses to receiving NPD-related results to inform inclusion in population-based genomic screening programs. Nine recurrent, pathogenic copy number variants (CNVs) were identified from research exome data, clinically confirmed, and disclosed to adult participants of the Geisinger MyCode Community Health Initiative DiscovEHR cohort by experienced genetic counselors. A subset of in-person genetic counseling sessions (n = 27)

wANNOVAR: annotating genetic variants for personal genomes via the web.

BACKGROUND: High-throughput DNA sequencing platforms have become widely available. As a result, personal genomes are increasingly being sequenced in research and clinical settings. However, the resulting massive amounts of variants data pose significant challenges to the average biologists and clinicians without bioinformatics skills. METHODS AND RESULTS: We developed a web server called wANNOVAR to address the critical needs for functional annotation of genetic variants from personal genomes. The server provides simple and intuitive interface to help users determine the functional significan

Novel therapeutics in autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition with limited treatment options that address its full complexity. This review critically evaluates novel therapeutics across five key domains: behavioral and psychosocial interventions, psychopharmacology, digital and AI-driven tools, neuromodulation, and genetic therapies. The broad heterogeneity of ASD complicates clinical research, often obscuring treatment effects and limiting generalizability. Challenges across domains include identifying reliable biomarkers, defining meaningful outcomes, and ensuring equitable

Opioid-Involved Overdose Vulnerability in Wyoming: Measuring Risk in a Rural Environment.

BACKGROUND: Between 2009 and 2019 opioid-involved fatal overdose rates increased by 45% and the average opioid dispensing rate in Wyoming was higher than the national average. The opioid crisis is shaped by a complex set of socioeconomic, geopolitical, and health-related variables. We conducted a vulnerability assessment to identify Wyoming counties at higher risk of opioid-related harm, factors associated with this risk, and areas in need of overdose treatment access to inform priority responses. METHODS: We compiled 2016 to 2018 county-level aggregated and de-identified data. We created ris

Patient-Centered Care for Patients with Depression or Anxiety Disorder: An Integrative Review.

People have specific and unique individual and contextual characteristics, so healthcare should increasingly opt for person-centered care models. Thus, this review aimed to identify and synthesize the indicators for the care process of the person with depression and/or anxiety disorders, based on patient-centered care, going through the stages of diagnostic assessment and care planning, including intervention. An integrative literature review with research in seven scientific databases and a narrative analysis were carried out. Twenty articles were included, with indicators for diagnostic eval

Epilepsy liaison nursing.

The epilepsy liaison nurse's aim is to achieve a positive outcome in terms of clients' general well-being, social and physical activities, behavioural difficulties and other important issues in their lives. Many clients' problems stem from a lack of adequate information and support. A sound knowledge of the disorder can boost clients' and carers' confidence. They need information on what to do during a seizure, how to ensure that other people know what to do, and to understand the importance of being aware of precipitating factors. Clients and their families should also be encouraged to talk a

HIV-positive patient's choice of a significant other to be informed about the HIV-test result: findings from an HIV/AIDS counselling programme in the regional hospitals of Arusha and Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

Sharing the knowledge of infection is important for HIV prevention. But the HIV-infected person runs the risk of being blamed and rejected. The quality of relationships and their disruptions are important for disease progress. In order to cope with AIDS and related problems, the AIDS patient needs to identify a confidant, a significant other, who will be caring, supportive, and who can help share the diagnosis with others who should be informed. The present study on the HIV-infected patients' choice of significant others reveals the fallibility of traditional views on patterns of support. Pati

Wishing to be perceived as a capable and resourceful person-A qualitative study of melanoma patients' experiences of the contact and interaction with healthcare professionals.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore patients' experiences of contact and interaction with healthcare professionals (HCPs) during the diagnostic process of melanoma. BACKGROUND: In Sweden, most patients with suspected skin lesions seek care at the primary level of services in the first instance. Previous research describes the diagnostic process as a complex journey with uncertainty. Nonetheless, the importance of contact and interaction between patient and HCPs during the diagnostic process is rarely explored. DESIGN: This study adopted a qualitative design in which semi-structured interviews we

Dry Eye Disease and personality: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Dry Eye Disease (DED) is a widespread condition associated with ocular discomfort and reduced quality of life. Personality traits may influence symptom perception, disease course and patients' psychological adjustment, suggesting that subjectively experienced symptoms could be shaped by stable individual characteristics. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the available evidence regarding personality in individuals with DED. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search was conducted in November 2025 in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science using the terms "dry eye

Caregiver-identified strengths in children attending their first neurodevelopmental assessment: Findings from the Sydney child development research registry and development of a child strengths checklist.

There has been a growing focus on the importance of understanding strengths in children with neurodevelopmental conditions and how such knowledge can support clinical practices. However, limited research has explored systematic reports of strengths from caregivers of children with neurodevelopmental conditions, most commonly autism. In this study, we explored caregiver-identified strengths in children attending their first neurodevelopmental assessment. Caregivers of 686 children attending a tertiary assessment service answered a survey question about their children's strengths. Content analys

Effectiveness of personal protective measures to prevent Lyme disease.

After the manufacture of Lyme vaccine was discontinued in 2002, strategies to prevent Lyme disease (LD) have focused on personal protective measures. Effectiveness of these measures has not been conclusively demonstrated. The aim of our case-control study was to assess the effectiveness of personal preventive measures in a highly disease-endemic area. Case-patients were persons with LD reported to Connecticut's Department of Public Health and classified as having definite, possible, or unlikely LD. Age-matched controls without LD were identified. Study participants were interviewed to assess t

Earliest recollections in anorexia and bulimia.

Earliest Recollections (ER) are very useful as they reveal information about a person's main aims and lifestyle, according to the Individual Psychology assumption of the inner coherence of the personality. This paper looks at the utility of analyzing ER in psychopathological research, diagnosis and therapy. Its purpose is to compare particular ER in a group of anorectic outpatients, a group of bulimic outpatients and in a control group. The results provide further evidence that ER are a useful instrument to identify various aspects of family dynamics, particular pathological nuclei which are o

Sexuality and the adult with acquired physical disability.

A theme of this article is that sexuality is a broad concept that includes perceptions of one's self as male or female as well as sexual drives and behaviors, which are influenced by personal, societal, and cultural factors. Disability has demonstrable impact on sexuality and must be taken into account by nurses concerned with rehabilitative approaches to clients with disabilities. Self-assessment by professionals of their attitudes and feelings about sexuality was encouraged. Some strategies were offered by which nurses can define and identify their level of involvement in the sexual counseli

Profile of Persons Recently Infected with HIV-1 in Belgium: New Insights to Tailor Prevention Efforts.

Despite wide availability of prevention and treatment services, including the ongoing roll-out of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), the HIV epidemic is not under control in Belgium. Hence, there is a recognized need to improve case finding and early diagnosis to curb the further spread of HIV more effectively. The objective of the present study was to improve insight into the profiles of persons recently infected with HIV-1 and on their prevention trajectory. Between May 2018 and December 2022, we selected persons diagnosed in Belgium within three months of the presumed infection date. We then
