Impact of the addition of clinical pharmacy services to the cardiac catheterization laboratory.

PURPOSE: Our cardiology pharmacy team recently expanded services to the cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) with the addition of a dedicated pharmacist; since that time, numerous process improvement initiatives have been implemented and medication review has been expanded. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective chart review. The primary outcome was the percentage of patients discharged from the CCL on appropriate guideline-directed medical therapy components after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) before and after integration of dedicated pharmacist services in the CC

An Integrative Review of Micro-Credentials and Digital Badges for Pharmacy Educators.

Micro-credentials (MCs) and digital badges (DBs) have gained popularity in recent years as a means to supplement traditional degrees and certifications. MCs and DBs can play a significant role in supporting student-centered learning by offering personalized and flexible learning pathways, emphasizing real-world relevance and practical skills, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth. However, barriers currently exist within health professions education, including pharmacy education, that could limit the full adoption and implementation of MCs and DBs. Research on the use of MC

Pharmacy Student Education Related to Opioids: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

OBJECTIVES: This scoping review explores and assesses the extent of the literature on the current state of opioid-related training and education of student pharmacists and identifies areas for further research to improve the preparedness of future pharmacists in managing care for patients using opioid medications. Role of pharmaceutical care in therapeutic regimens within the community pharmacy.

The concept of pharmaceutical care (PC) has existed as a professional philosophy for more than 30 years. However, for a long period of time, little had been done for its integration into the regular practice of healthcare provision. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting increase in patient influx in the community pharmacies (CP) encouraged the exploration and establishment of new healthcare services provided within the CP. Nevertheless, these services of PC are still novel, and more can be done to expand the community pharmacists' current role in primary healthcare. This can be achieved by i…

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dispensing medicines in the community pharmacy.

BACKGROUND: The world has faced an unprecedented challenge since COVID-19 emerged as a pandemic, which has led to quarantine and disruptions in drug services. During the pandemic, drug use habits and availability changed, causing a shift in behaviors and, in turn, medicine misuse. In Iraq, this is a major problem because many medicines can be easily obtained. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to describe the pattern of dispensing medications during the pandemic and to evaluate the biochemical and pathological consequences. METHOD: The analytical, observational, cross-sectional study was performed vi

A new clinical opportunity: Rechallenging penicillin allergy in an outpatient pharmacy.

In the United States, approximately 27 million people have a documented penicillin allergy, but 90% of the allergies are falsely labeled. By rechallenging suspected allergies, a pharmacist can optimize patient care, fulfill antimicrobial stewardship objectives, and educate patients on true allergies. We suggest a protocol that allows pharmacists to investigate the presence of an allergy and conduct a challenge when indicated. The protocol consists of a patient interview, a risk assessment, an oral rechallenge, and the potential for a skin test. The testing and delabeling of penicillin allergie

METHODS: Opioid-related activities were identified from the AACP opioid-related activities database and classified by two independent reviewers. The final activities included: (1) direct participation in drug disposal and/or naloxone outreach, (2) opio

Feasibility of a Centralized, Pharmacy-Led Penicillin Allergy Delabeling Program.

BACKGROUND: Penicillin allergy labels are often inaccurate in children and removing unnecessary labels results in improved outcomes and lower health care costs. Although the hospital setting is a frequent point of contact for children, strategies to evaluate penicillin allergies in the hospital are lacking. METHODS: We performed a prospective pilot study to determine the feasibility of a centralized, pharmacy-led approach to penicillin allergy evaluation. Children with a reported history of penicillin allergy admitted to our children's hospital were risk-stratified and those stratified as low
