Biological activity against reference and multi-drug resistant (MDR) clinical strains of fluoroquinolones (FQs): ciprofloxacin (HCp), norfloxacin (HNr), lomefloxacin (HLm) and sparfloxacin (HSf), phosphine ligands derived from those antibiotics and 14 phosphino copper(I) and copper(II) complexes with 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, 1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2'-biquinoline have been determined. In this work, we examined the proteolytic and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activities of venom from the opisthoglyphous colubrid Pseudoboa neuwiedii. Proteolytic activity (3 and 10 μg of venom) was comparable to that of Bothrops neuwiedii venom but less than Bothrops atrox. This activity was inhibited by EDTA and 1,10-phenanthroline but only slightly affected (≤30% inhibition) by PMSF and AEBSF, indicating it was mediated by snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs). Pseudallescheria boydii is an opportunistic filamentous fungus that causes serious infections in humans. Virulence attributes expressed by P. boydii are unknown. Conversely, peptidases are incriminated as virulence factors in several pathogenic fungi. Here we investigated the extracellular peptidase profile in P. boydii. Subunit interactions in the band 3 protein of the human red blood cell membrane have been examined by a combination of cross-linking, chemical labeling, and in situ proteolysis. We report a paper-based analytical device for total Fe detection in vitreous humor to estimate the post-mortem interval (PMI) for forensic applications. This method improves a previously reported approach by replacing 1,10-phenanthroline (o-phen) with bathophenanthroline (bato-phen) as the chromogenic reagent, enhancing analytical performance. Mucormycosis is an emerging disease with high mortality rates. Few antifungal drugs are active against Mucorales. Considering the low efficacy of monotherapy, combination-therapy strategies have been described. It is known that fungi are susceptible to zinc deprivation, so we tested the in vitro effect of the zinc chelators clioquinol, phenanthroline, and N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine combined with amphotericin B or posaconazole against 25 strains of Mucorales. Clioquinol-posaconazole was the most active combination, although results were strain dependent.
