Diagnostic value of profile photography in identifying departures from the norm of growth pattern and horizontal jaw relationship.

BACKGROUND: Although the importance of facial photography in orthodontics has been recognized, there is only one study on its validity and absolutely no studies on its diagnostic value. This study was conducted, therefore, to evaluate for the first time the diagnostic merit of photography in detecting growth pattern and jaw relationships. METHODS: Standardized lateral cephalographs and profile photographs were taken from 54 girls and 26 boys. On cephalometry, growth pattern (normal, horizontal, and vertical) and horizontal bimaxillary classification (Classes I to III) were determined. Using p…

The 360 photography: a new anatomical insight of the sphenoid bone. Interest for anatomy teaching and skull base surgery.

Skull base architecture is tough to understand because of its 3D complex shape and its numerous foramen, reliefs or joints. It is especially true for the sphenoid bone whom central location hinged with most of skull base components is unique. Recently, technological progress has led to develop new pedagogical tools. This way, we bought a new real-time three-dimensional insight of the sphenoid bone that could be useful for the teacher, the student and the surgeon. High-definition photography was taken all around an isolated dry skull base bone prepared with Beauchêne's technique. Pictures were …

Fundus photography as a convenient tool to study microvascular responses to cardiovascular disease risk factors in epidemiological studies.

The microcirculation consists of blood vessels with diameters less than 150 µm. It makes up a large part of the circulatory system and plays an important role in maintaining cardiovascular health. The retina is a tissue that lines the interior of the eye and it is the only tissue that allows for a non-invasive analysis of the microvasculature. Nowadays, high-quality fundus images can be acquired using digital cameras. Retinal images can be collected in 5 min or less, even without dilatation of the pupils. This unobtrusive and fast procedure for visualizing the microcirculation is attractive to

Natural history study of recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa wounds and patient reported outcomes using mobile application home photography.

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is a rare, blistering genetic disease where wounding and wound pain are the most reported problems by patients. The natural history of RDEB wounds, specifically spontaneous wound closure between chronic open vs. recurrent wounds, has not been prospectively studied, thus limiting the design of clinical trial endpoints. We conducted a prospective observational study in which participants used a mobile application to upload weekly photographs of multiple target wounds for up to 6 months and reported associated wound pain and itch (Photo Cohort, N

Multicolor imaging compared with red-free fundus photography in the detection of glaucomatous retinal nerve fiber layer thinning.

BACKGROUND: To compare the ability of multicolor imaging (MCI) with red-free fundus photography (RFP) to detect glaucomatous retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning. METHODS: A total of 127 eyes of 79 patients with glaucoma underwent MCI using blue light, RFP, and circumpapillary optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanning on the same day. Angular location and width of the RNFL defects (RNFLDs) identified on the MCI and RFP were independently measured, and compared with those of RNFL thinning indicated by abnormal color codes on OCT. RESULTS: The angular location and width of the RNFLDs de…

Increasing Skin Cancer Prevention in Young Adults: the Cumulative Impact of Personalized UV Photography and MC1R Genetic Testing.

Skin cancer has become increasingly common among young adults; however, this population does not consistently adhere to recommended methods for preventing the disease. Interventions in college settings have relied on appearance-focused appeals and have not been able to examine the cumulative effect of multiple behavior change and skin cancer risk communication strategies. The goal of the current study was to examine the unique and combined impacts of personalized ultraviolet (UV) radiation photographs, genetic testing for skin cancer risk, and general skin cancer prevention education. Particip

Homonymous Hemianopic Hyporeflective Retinal Abnormality on Infrared Confocal Scanning Laser Photography: A Novel Sign of Optic Tract Lesion.

Infrared confocal scanning laser photography of a patient with long-standing optic tract lesion revealed a homonymous hemianopic hyporeflective image contralateral to the visual field defect. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography showed thinning of the retinal nerve fiber and retinal ganglion cell layer and thickening of the inner nuclear layer (with microcystic degeneration) in the macular area, matching the infrared image. Hyporeflective image on infrared laser photography is associated with retinal degeneration secondary to anterior visual pathway disease and, when located in homonym…
