Circadian dysregulation as a factor in impaired hepatic protein-synthetic function under chronic photoperiod disruption: the role of sex and chronobiotic correction.

BACKGROUND: Liver metabolism is under tight control of the circadian system. Disruption of key clock gene expression (desynchronosis) leads to the misalignment of metabolic pathways. However, the relationship between circadian dysregulation and hepatic protein-synthetic function, as well as its sexual dimorphism, remains poorly understood. To evaluate the effect of chronic photoperiod disruption on hepatic protein-synthetic function (total protein, albumin) and to establish its relationship with the expression of key circadian proteins (BMAL1, CLOCK, PER2) in male and female rats, as well as t…

Effect of hCG Administration at the Second Cloprostenol Injection on the Reproductive Performance of Saanen Goats Previously Exposed to 16-h Photoperiod.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) on the second prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) injection in anestrous Saanen goats that had been previously exposed to a 16-h photoperiod. Seventy-two pluriparous goats were subjected to a 16-h photoperiod for 60 days. Ten days later, synchronisation of estrus was conducted with two injections of cloprostenol administered 11.5 days apart. At the second injection, goats received either 300 IU of hCG (hCG group) or no hCG (control group). Estrus response, ovarian structures, progesterone (P4) concentrations, and pregnancy ra…

Regulation of melatonin receptors in the pars tuberalis of Syrian hamsters transferred from long to short photoperiod: implication of melatonin and testosterone.

The exposure of long day seasonal breeders to a short photoperiod (SP) induces both sexual quiescence and a decrease in pars tuberalis (PT) melatonin receptor density. Therefore, we studied the respective roles of melatonin and testosterone on the regulation of PT melatonin receptors in Syrian hamsters transferred from long photoperiod (LP) to SP. Compared with intact sexually active animals in LP, the density of melatonin receptors was not affected by the absence of melatonin after removal of the pineal gland from animals kept in either SP or LP. In contrast, the presence of a long melatonin …

Low ambient temperature does not affect the pineal concentrations of either 5-methoxytryptamine or melatonin in golden hamsters kept under short photoperiod.

This work investigates the rhythmic synthesis of pineal 5-methoxytryptamine and related indoles in golden hamsters as a function of ambient … at 20 degrees C. These results suggest that low temperature, which is known to accelerate the short photoperiod-induced gonadal regression, acts at a level different to that of the pineal gland or affects another compound in the pineal gland.

Rapid adjustment of the pineal N-acetyltransferase rhythm to change from long to short photoperiod in the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

The dynamics of adjusting the pineal N-acetyltransferase rhythm from long to short photoperiod was assessed in the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). The transition from LD 16:8 to LD 8:16 was accomplished by symmetrical prolongation of the dark period. In LD 16:8, the period of elevated nocturnal activity lasted approximately 7 hours. During the first prolonged night, the evening N-acetyltransferase rise advanced by almost 3 hours relative to the rise in LD 16:8 and occurred at the same time as during the 3rd, 7th, and 14th day after the transition. The morning N-acetyltransferase d…

Transcriptome Analysis Revealed Long Non-Coding RNAs Associated with mRNAs in Sheep Thyroid Gland under Different Photoperiods.

The thyroid gland is a vital endocrine organ involved in the reproduction of animals via the regulation of hormone synthesis and secretion. LncRNAs have been proven to play important roles in reproductive regulation; however, the associated mechanism in the thyroid gland has not been clarified. In this study, we investigated to identify photoperiod-induced lncRNAs and mRNAs in the thyroid gland in Sunite ewes by comparing the expression profiles of short photoperiod (SP) and long photoperiods (LP). A total of 41,088 lncRNAs were identified in the thyroid gland through RNA-Seq. Functional analy…

Influence of altered photoperiods on serum melatonin and its receptors (MT1 and MT2) in the brain, retina, and ovary in carp Catla catla.

Daily variation in melatonin receptor (MT1 and MT2) density in three specific tissues-brain, retina, and ovary-and its temporal relationship with serum melatonin were evaluated for the first time in a freshwater teleost, the carp Catla catla, under natural as well as altered photoperiods in different reproductive phases of the annual cycle. Cosinor analysis was used to determine rhythmic features of the serum melatonin and receptors (MT1 and MT2) in different tissues. In each photoperiodic group, irrespective of season, the daily minimum serum melatonin level was noted at midday. However, the …

Swimming activity and behaviour of European Anguilla anguilla glass eels in response to photoperiod and flow reversal and the role of energy status.

To better understand migratory divergences among Anguilla anguilla glass eels, the behaviour of individuals caught at the time of their estuary entrance was studied through their response to a light:dark cycle and then to both water current reversal and light:dark cycle. In a first experiment, fish moving with the flow in response to dusk (M(+) fish) and fish that had not exhibited any movement (M(-) fish) were distinguished. Anguilla anguilla from these two groups were then individually marked and their response to water current reversal compared. M(+) individuals mainly exhibited negative rh

Neuropeptide Y: distribution of immunoreactivity and quantitative analysis in diencephalic structures and cerebral cortex of dwarf hamsters under different photoperiods.

The distribution of neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity (NPY-LI) was investigated by immunohistochemistry and radioimmunoassay (RIA) in the brain of the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus) held under either long or short photoperiods. In the diencephalic and telencephalic structures studied, distinct patterns of NPY-LI were basically consistent in male and female animals of both groups. NPY levels detected by RIA from tissue samples taken at six time points throughout the 24-hour cycle were in the range of 15-60 pmol/mg protein in the diencephalon or below 5 pmol/mg protein in cerebral cor…

The effect of different photoperiods on the methylating capacity of the pineal gland of adult, male golden hamsters, with special reference to 5-methoxyindoles.

Testes weight, plasma FSH and LH concentration and pineal methylating capacity were compared in hamsters housed under either long (LD14:10) or short (LD8:16) photoperiods. Hamsters housed for 14 weeks under short photoperiod showed gonadal atrophy, which was complete after 6 weeks. Also plasma FSH and LH concentration showed a marked decline after transfer to short photoperiod. However, after 14 weeks the concentration of FSH and LH as well as testes weight increased again. Under both photoperiods day/night rhythms in plasma FSH and LH concentration were measured. Under both light regimes the …

Circadian photosensitive phase and photoperiodic control of testis activity in the mink (Mustela vison Peale and Beauvois), a short-day mammal.

Evidence of a circadian photosensitive phase in male mink, whose annual reproductive cycle is characterized by the recrudescence of testicular development in autumn, was based on the study of testicular response after interrupting the dark period by light breaks (0.5 h) offered at various times. In this mammal, the experimental short days 4L:20D and 8L:16D stimulated testicular growth. Short photoperiods, including a main light period of 3.5 h and an additional 0.5 h light break 7.5 h after the beginning of the main photoperiod, were as effective as 8L:16D in stimulating testicular development…

[Study of the photoperiodic dynamics of the peripheral dopamine content in comparison with the thyroid profile in various groups of men from the European North].

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the physiological mechanisms of adaptation arising in response to changes in photoperiods is especially important for residents of the European North. In the literature, there is practically no information about photoperiodic dynamics of serum dopamine level, despite its significant role in the regulation of the body's activity. The mutual modulating effect of the dopaminergic and thyroid systems is known. AIM: To show the ratio of dopamine levels and the content of hormones, protines and autoantibodies of the thyroid system, taking into account photoperiod of the yea…

Pineal and pituitary involvement in the photoperiodic regulation of body weight, coat color and testicular size of the Djungarian hamster, Phodopus sungorus.

Hypophysectomy of 40-day-old male hamsters kept under long photoperiods resulted in a change in coat color from the brownish summer coat to the whitish winter coat, within 5 wk of the surgery, cessation of growth, and, most frequently, an additional loss in body weight. The testes of the hypophysectomized animals were involuted within 14 days after surgery. Continuous substitution of prolactin by implantation of two anterior pituitaries under the kidney capsule was able to reverse partly or totally the inhibitory effects of hypophysectomy on coat color and body weight, although there was no in…

Comparative transcriptome analysis reveals molecular mechanisms of the effects of light intensity and photoperiod on ovarian development in Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852).

Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) has important economic value in China and internationally. In this research, the comparative transcriptome analysis was used to reveal molecular mechanisms of influences of photoperiod and light intensity on ovarian development in P. clarkii for the first time. Some genes (such as laminin, collagen, integrin beta, catenin) and pathways (including TGF-beta signaling pathway, focal adhesion, ECM-receptor interaction) associated with ovarian development and oocyte maturation were significantly upregulated. Some genes related to circadian clock (such as CLK, PER)…

Characterization of melatonin synthesis in the gastrointestinal tract of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): distribution, relation with serotonin, daily rhythms and photoperiod regulation.

Melatonin is synthesized in peripheral locations of vertebrates, including the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). In teleost, information regarding this topic is scarce. Here we studied the presence and synthesis of melatonin at the rainbow trout GIT. Different sections of trout GIT (from esophagus to hindgut) were dissected out and assayed for contents of melatonin, serotonin (5-HT) and its metabolite, 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid, as well as for aanat1, aanat2 and hiomt mRNA abundance. A trout group was pinealectomized to evaluate changes in plasma and gut melatonin content. Finally, the daily pro
