[Strigiphilus strigis (Mallophaga: Philopteridae) in a Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo interpositus) in Turkey].

In this study, a Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo b. interpositus) was brought to the laboratory of Parasitology Department and was inspected for ectoparasites. Five Mallophaga specimens were collected from the eagle owl and they were mounted on slides in Faure forte medium after being cleared in 10% KOH. Morphologic characteristics of the lice were inspected and measured under the light microscope. All of the specimens were identified as Strigiphilus strigis (Pontoppidan 1763). This paper presents the first detection of S. strigis in Turkey.

[Infestation with Linognathus africanus (Kellogg e Paine, 1911) (Linognathidae) and Bovicola caprae (Ewing, 1936) (Trichodectidae) in goat flock of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil].

Mixed infestations with Linognathus africanus and Bovicola caprae were diagnosed in a lot of 20 goats from a flock of 40, belonging to a farm from the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, RJ (22 degrees 44'38''S and 43 degrees 42'27''W). Animals were of both sexes, varied ages and different breeds (half blood Saanen/Boer, Saanen, cross breeds), were examined in April of 2004. With an exception of one goat, parasitized only by L. africanus, the remainders 19 (95%) were infested by the two species lice. Of 69 (71%) specimens of L. africanus and 28 (28.9%) of B. caprae co

[Mallophaga (Insecta) species occurring on storks (Ciconia ciconia Linnaeus, 1758)].

This study was carried out in order to determine the presence of Mallophaga species on storks in Konya, Turkey. For this purpose, 15 storks were inspected for chewing lice in March 2003. The lice collected from the storks were preserved in a vial containing 70% alcohol. They were cleared in lactophenol for a few days and mounted on slides in the Faure-Forte medium. Thirteen storks were found to be infested with lice. In addition, one tick was found on a stork. A total of 1316 lice were collected from the storks. They were identified as Colpocephalum zebra, Neophilopterus incompletus, Ardeicola

Mallophaga species on long-legged buzzards (Buteo rufinus): new records from Turkey.

This study was carried out on two long-legged buzzards that were brought for treatment to the surgery clinic of the Veterinary Faculty, University of Selçuk. A few lice were observed on the body surfaces of the birds. Forty-seven lice were collected from the buzzards. The lice were preserved in a tube containing 70% ethanol. They were mounted on slides separately after being cleared in lactophenol. Four species of lice (Laemobothrion maximum, Degeeriella fulva, Craspedorrynchus platystomus, and Colpocephalum sp.) were identified by microscopical examination. The specimens of Colpocephalum coul

Pediculosis.

Pediculosis can be caused by two distinctly different organisms, the head louse and the pubic louse. Although differing anatomically, they produce equivalent disorders, with itching, bites, and nits on the hairs. The head louse causes disease of the scalp, while the pubic louse lives in short hair in the pubic regions, the body, the axillae, the eyebrows, and the eyelashes. Both can be treated with gamma isomer of hexachlorobenzene, but various mixtures of pyrethrins seem more effective. The body louse, which exactly resembles the head louse, is the only one that can transmit disease. Treatmen

Distribution of Mallophaga on the body of Acridotheres tristis (Aves).

4 species of Mallophaga (2 Amblycera, Menacanthus eurysternus and Myrsidea sp., and 2 Ischnocera, Brueelia chayanh and Sturnidoecus affinis) coexist on the body of Common Myna, Acridotheres tristis. The distribution of eggs, nymphs and adults of these species on the body of host is discussed. The patterns of distribution coincides with their morphological adaptations.

Ecological factors shaping the ectoparasite community assembly of the Azara's Grass Mouse, Akodon azarae (Rodentia: Cricetidae).

Parasites are integral members of the global biodiversity. They are useful indicators of environmental stress, food web structure and divers … n of the rodent Akodon azarae. A total of 278 rodents were examined and mites (Mesostigmata), lice (Phthiraptera), ticks (Ixodida) and fleas (Siphonaptera) were determined. A multi-correspondence analysis was performed in order to analyze interactions within the ectoparasite community and the influence of environmental and host variables on this assembly. We f …

Integrative taxonomic description of the chewing louse Tricholipeurus lipeuroides infesting Odocoileus virginianus veraecrucis white-tailed deer in Veracruz, Mexico.

Chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Amblycera, Ischnocera) represent a component of the ectoparasite fauna associated with large sized mammals as deers. However, the diversity of chewing louse species infesting deer remains to be fully characterized in the Neotropics. Little is known about the chewing lice infesting the extant fourteen subspecies of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Mexico. Known to infest white-tailed deer (WTD) in Canada and the United States (U.S.), Tricholipeurus lipeuroides is a chewing louse species that was originally described in the nineteenth century infesting O.…

Resistance and the control of lice on humans and production animals.

Phthiraptera (lice) are specialised insects adapted to parasitise many warm-blooded vertebrates, including domestic animals and humans. Often, attempts by the host to alleviate the irritation created by lice, causes derangement of the hair/fur coat. Unless treated, this derangement may cause economic losses due to hide damage and/or downgrading of wool/hair/fur. In 1981, application of aqueous insecticide solutions (dipping) for the control of sheep body lice (Bovicola ovis) was largely superseded by off-shears pyrethroid "pour-on" treatments. By 1985, several field failures with these product…

High prevalence and low intensity of Echinophthirius horridus infection in seals revealed by high effort sampling.

Seal lice (Echinophthirius horridus) are bloodsucking ectoparasites of phocid seals and vectors of pathogens like the heartworm, Acanthocheilonema spirocauda. Grey and harbour seal populations are recovering in German waters and wildlife health surveillance is crucial for wildlife conservation. A new, high effort sampling protocol for seal lice was applied for grey and harbour seals along the German North- and Baltic Sea coast. Freshly dead seals were systematically sampled within a health monitoring of stranded seals over 12 months. Prevalence, intensity and distribution patterns of seal lice

Metal-Free Cortico-Pedicular Device for Supplemental Fixation in Lumbar Interbody Fusion.

OBJECTIVE: Pedicle screw fixation is a commonly utilized adjunct for lumbar interbody fusion, yet risks include screw malposition, pullout, loosening, neurovascular injury, and stress transfers leading to adjacent segment degeneration. This report describes the preclinical and initial clinical results of a minimally invasive, metal-free cortico-pedicular fixation device used for supplemental posterior fixation in lumbar interbody fusion. METHODS: Safety of arcuate tunnel creation was evaluated in cadaveric lumbar (L1-S1) specimens. A finite element analysis study evaluated clinical stability
