Carryover effects of treadmill-based footstrike modification gait retraining on overground running biomechanics.

Gait retraining has gained attention as a practical intervention to improve running biomechanics and reduce injury risk. This study investigated the carryover effects of treadmill-based gait retraining on footstrike pattern, cadence, and vertical loading rate during overground running. Twelve recreational runners who habitually adopted a rearfoot strike (RFS) pattern participated in an eight-session treadmill-based gait retraining programme aimed at footstrike transition to a midfoot strike (MFS). The programme utilised real-time visual feedback and progressively reduced guidance to encourage

The Impact of Weekly Acceleration and Deceleration Loads on Neuromuscular Performance in Soccer: A Session-to-Session Analysis.

This study examined weekly variations in accelerations, decelerations, and neuromuscular performance in male under-19 soccer players. It also explored the relationship between accumulated acceleration and deceleration loads and fluctuations in neuromuscular performance across a weekly microcycle. A repeated-measures observational design was used over two consecutive weeks, involving 39 outfield players monitored via Global Navigation Satellite Systems. Neuromuscular performance was assessed through countermovement jump (CMJ), hamstring strength (HS), and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), m

Intensity Gradients: A Novel Method for Interpreting External Loads in Football.

PURPOSE: Global navigation satellite system device-derived metrics are commonly represented by discrete zones with intensity often measured by standardizing volume to per-minute of activity duration. This approach is sensitive to imprecision in duration measurement and can lead to highly variable outcomes-transforming data from zones to a gradient may overcome this problem. The purpose of this study was to critically evaluate this approach for measuring team-sport activity demands. METHODS: Data were collected from 129 first-team and 73 academy matches from a Scottish Premiership football clu

Predefined vs data-guided training prescription based on autonomic nervous system variation: A systematic review.

Monitoring variations in the functioning of the autonomic nervous system may help personalize training of runners and provide more pronounced physiological adaptations and performance improvements. We systematically reviewed the scientific literature comparing physiological adaptations and/or improvements in performance following training based on responses of the autonomic nervous system (ie, changes in heart rate variability) and predefined training. PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science were searched systematically in July 2019. Keywords related to endurance, running, autonomic nervous sy

Physical training and exercise in myasthenia gravis.

Myasthenia gravis is characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue. As sustained muscle use increases the weakness, the value of physical training programs has previously been questioned. This is a review to clarify the safety and usefulness of systematic training in myasthenia gravis, based on a systematic search in available databases using the relevant key words. Ten intervention studies including 159 patients with generalized disease have been published regarding the effect of systematic physical training, three of them on respiratory muscles. Muscle strength improved, and in the majority o

Spontaneous Pneumomediastinum in a Teenager After Physical Exercise: a Benign and Rare, but Sometimes Challenging, Entity.

INTRODUCTION: Pneumomediastinum defines a condition in which free air is present in the mediastinum usually caused by alveolar rupture resulting from a sudden increase in the intrathoracic pressure and air tracking along the tracheobronchial tree. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 16-year-old male patient referred to our department due to persisting odynophagia, and retrosternal chest pain. A performed chest-CT revealed presence of free air in the mediastinum, without evidence of pneumothorax, or subcutaneous emphysema. Under the diagnosis of spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) the treatmen

Head Impact Exposure in College Football after a Reduction in Preseason Practices.

INTRODUCTION: Regulatory efforts toward reducing concussion risk have begun to focus on decreasing the number of head impacts (i.e., head impact burden) sustained by athletes in contact sports. To that end, in 2018, the NCAA decreased the number of preseason on-field team activities for Division I teams from 29 to 25. The objective of the current study was to quantify changes in practice schedule and head impact exposure between the 2017 and 2018 football preseasons. METHODS: Athletes from five NCAA Division I football teams (n = 426) were consented and enrolled. RESULTS: On average, athlete

Pulmonary hypertension and exercise training: a synopsis on the more recent evidences.

The benefits of exercise training in virtually all humans, including those with a clinically stable chronic disease are numerous. The potential value lies in the fact that functional capacity is oftentimes significantly compromised. Exercise training not only play a role in reversing some of the pathophysiologic processes associated with chronic diseases but also improves clinical trajectory. Given the significant pathologic consequences associated with pulmonary hypertension and its implications for deteriorating right ventricular function as well as the perceived potential for a precipitous

Effects of a dynamic core stability program on the biomechanics of cutting maneuvers: A randomized controlled trial.

Deficits in trunk control predict ACL injuries which frequently occur during high-risk activities such as cutting. However, no existing trunk control/core stability program has been found to positively affect trunk kinematics during cutting activities. This study investigated the effectiveness of a 6-week dynamic core stability program (DCS) on the biomechanics of anticipated and unanticipated side and crossover cutting maneuvers. Thirty-one male, varsity footballers participated in this randomized controlled trial. Three-dimensional trunk and lower limb biomechanics were captured in a motion

Socialization, and its modulation by sex, on the development and recovery of activity-based anorexia in rats.

The activity-based anorexia (ABA) animal model has been used in the laboratory to study the role of excessive physical activity in the manifestation of anorexia nervosa (AN) in humans. Factors of social context are crucial in human health and the emergence of many psychological disorders, which have also been observed in studies using different mammal species that, like human beings, set their lives in groups. In the present study, the animals' social condition was manipulated to observe the effect of socialization in ABA development, and the possible different influence of the variable sex on

Move to improve: protocol for a single-arm, pragmatic feasibility trial of an individualised physical activity programme for children with chronic conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity improves physical and psychosocial outcomes in healthy children and in children with a range of chronic health conditions. Unfortunately, children with chronic health conditions have lower levels of physical activity compared to their healthy peers due to multiple restrictions in physical activities and therefore tend to have lower levels of physical activity compared with their peers. This paper describes the protocol for Move to Improve, a pragmatic trial of an individualised physical activity intervention for children with chronic health conditions. METHODS

Changes in temperature inside an optomechanical model of the human eye during emulated transscleral cyclophotocoagulation.

Currently, many diseases of the eye are treated by laser surgery. An understanding of light propagation and the heating of eye tissue during laser exposure is crucial to improving the outcome of these procedures. Here, we present the development of physical and computational models of the human eye by combining optical light propagation and thermal characteristics. For the physical model, all parts of the eye, including cornea, lens, ciliary body, sclera, aqueous and vitreous humors, and iris, were fabricated using a 3D printed holder and modified polydimethylsiloxane. We also present a comput
