Pityriasis rosea is a common disorder of unknown etiology that may simulate a number of other dermatologic entities. Secondary syphilis should always be ruled out, particularly in adolescents. Pruritus occurs more frequently than is generally appreciated. The herald patch may not always be present. Secondary lesions occasionally occur distal to the elbows and knees and on the face. Over the more proximal parts of the body the secondary lesions will characteristically align themselves with the long axis following the skin lines of cleavage. The natural course is that of spontaneous resolution w…

Eighty-two patients with pityriasis versicolor were treated orally with ketoconazole in tablet form (200 mg). The tablets were taken at least 90 min before a meal, and patients who received only one tablet daily were told to refrain from bathing except immediately before ingestion of the drug and only once a day. Dosage of ketoconazole varied from a single dose of 400 mg to 200--400 mg per day for four weeks. Seventy-seven patients reported no adverse effects. There were reports from others of headache, gastralgia, nausea, dyspnea, dizziness, or tinnitus. In most affected patients, these sympt…

Pityriasis rosea is a common, self-limited disease which in its typical form should not raise diagnostic doubts. Nevertheless, its atypical presentations can be a challenge for the clinician, and hence it is important to be aware of them. Recognition of these forms may enable a correct diagnosis to be made and avoid unnecessary procedures. We present two patients for whom we believe atypical PR was the most likely the diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Pityriasis versicolor is a common epidermal mycotic infection, well known in its classic hypo- or hyperpigmented macular form. However, its atrophic variant, first described in 1971, remains rare and poorly documented. The underlying cause of this variant has yet to be determined.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report 3 cases of patients treated with topical steroids for inflammatory skin diseases (atopic dermatitis, cutaneous scleroderma, and mycosis fungoides) who developed erythematous and squamous atrophic lesions on their back during follow-up. Complete resolution of both patches an…
