Plant-Dominant Low-Protein Diet for Conservative Management of Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects >10% of the adult population. Each year, approximately 120,000 Americans develop end-stage kidney disease and initiate dialysis, which is costly and associated with functional impairments, worse health-related quality of life, and high early-mortality rates, exceeding 20% in the first year. Recent declarations by the World Kidney Day and the U.S. Government Executive Order seek to implement strategies that reduce the burden of kidney failure by slowing CKD progression and controlling uremia without dialysis. Pragmatic dietary interventions may have a role i

Tolerance of the eriophyid mite Aceria salsolae to UV-A light and implications for biological control of Russian thistle.

Aceria salsolae (Acari: Eriophyidae) is being evaluated as a candidate biological control agent of Russian thistle (Salsola tragus, Chenopodiaceae), a major invasive weed of rangelands and dryland crops in the western USA. Prior laboratory host range testing under artificial lighting indicated reproduction on non-native Bassia hyssopifolia and on a native plant, Suaeda calceoliformis. However, in field tests in the native range, mite populations released on these 'nontarget' plants remained low. We hypothesized that UV-A light, which can affect behavior of tetranychid mites, would affect popul

[Synergistic Repair Effect of Calcite-Based Passivator and Low-Accumulation Maize].

In this study, a field experiment of soil passivation and low accumulation-crops was carried out for typical northern alkaline cadmium and lead compound-polluted farmland soil. Calcite was used as the main passivation material, and a small amount of slaked lime, zeolite powder, and biochar were combined to form a group passivation agent. The effects of passivators on soil physicochemical properties, bioavailability of the heavy metals Cd and Pb, and the yield and plant (stalk and seed) content of heavy metals Cd and Pb in low-accumulation maize were investigated under different grouping condit

Disease-induced changes in Panax ginseng phyllosphere fungal community assembly and functional adaptation.

INTRODUCTION: Phyllosphere microorganisms play essential roles in plant health and disease resistance, yet their responses to pathogen infections remain poorly understood. Panax ginseng is susceptible to multiple fungal diseases, which threaten its quality and yield. This study aimed to clarify the underlying disease resistance mechanisms of Panax ginseng by analyzing the phyllosphere fungal communities associated with fungal infections. METHODS: Phyllosphere fungal communities of healthy Panax ginseng plants and those with three fungal infections (gray mold, damping-off and root rot) were co

Genome-Wide Identification and Analysis of the AHL Gene Family in Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.).

AT-hook motif nuclear-localized (AHL) genes play critical roles in chromatin remodeling and gene transcription regulation, profoundly influencing plant growth, development, and stress responses. While AHL genes have been extensively characterized in multiple plant species, their biological functions in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) remain largely uncharacterized. In this study, we identified 45 CaAHL genes in the pepper genome through bioinformatics approaches. Comprehensive analyses were conducted to examine their chromosomal distribution, phylogenetic relationships, and the structural and func

Production of deuterated switchgrass by hydroponic cultivation.

The bioenergy crop switchgrass was grown hydroponically from tiller cuttings in 50 % D 2 O to obtain biomass with 34 % deuterium substitution and physicochemical properties similar to those of H 2 O-grown switchgrass controls. Deuterium enrichment of biological materials can potentially enable expanded experimental use of small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to investigate molecular structural transitions of complex systems such as plant cell walls. Two key advances have been made that facilitate cultivation of switchgrass, an important forage and biofuel crop, for controlled isotopic enrichm

De novo stem cell establishment in meristems requires repression of organ boundary cell fate.

Stem cells play important roles in animal and plant biology, as they sustain morphogenesis and tissue replenishment following aging or injury. In plants, stem cells are embedded in multicellular structures called meristems. The formation of new meristems is essential for the plastic expansion of the highly branched shoot and root systems. In particular, axillary meristems (AMs) that produce lateral shoots arise from the division of boundary domain cells at the leaf base. The CUP-SHAPED COTYLEDON (CUC) genes are major determinants of the boundary domain and are required for AM initiation. Howev

The pathology and haematological changes in experimental Pimelea spp. poisoning in cattle ("St. George disease").

Six young cattle were intoxicated with either stem or extracts of stem of Pimelea trichostachya or P. continua. Oral dosage with whole plant or alcoholic extracts was shown to reproduce all the clinical and pathological features of the various field syndromes known collectively as "St. George disease". Subacute intoxication resulted from relatively high oral dose rates, of the order of 60 mg of whole stem/kg body weight/day, maintained for about 2 weeks. Diarrhoea, weakness and anaemia were the predominant features of this sundrome. Lower dose rates, regulated according to the severity of diar

Brassinosteroids in Plants: Crosstalk with Small-Molecule Compounds.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are known as the sixth type of plant hormone participating in various physiological and biochemical activities and play an irreplaceable role in plants. Small-molecule compounds (SMCs) such as nitric oxide (NO), ethylene, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are involved in plant growth and development as signaling messengers. Recently, the involvement of SMCs in BR-mediated growth and stress responses is gradually being discovered in plants, including seed germination, adventitious rooting, stem elongation, fruit ripening, and stress responses. The cross

Cloning and Characterization of IbDREB1d and Its Role in Plant Growth Regulation in Sweet Potato.

DREB (Dehydration-Responsive Element-Binding Protein) transcription factors are a subfamily of the AP2/ERF transcription factor family and play a crucial role in the regulation of plant responses to abiotic stress. In this study, we successfully cloned the IbDREB1d gene from the leafy sweet potato cultivar Fucaishu18. The open reading frame (ORF) of the IbDREB1d gene comprises 792 base pairs and encodes a protein consisting of 263 amino acids. Protein sequence analysis indicates that IbDREB1d is characterized by acidic, hydrophilic, and unstable properties, with its closest phylogenetic relati
