The impact of embolic protection device and stent design on the outcome of CAS.

The importance of angioplasty and stenting in the treatment of carotid artery disease cannot be underestimated. Successful carotid stenting does not only depend on the operator's skills and experience but also on an adequate selection of cerebral protection devices, and carotid stents can help avoid neurological complications. A broad spectrum of carotid devices is currently on the market, and because each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages, it is virtually impossible to claim that one specific device is the best. The individual characteristics of each specific protection system

Consequences of increased rigidity in palatal implants for snoring: a randomized controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: Palatal implants have seen an increased role in the treatment of snoring. In this study, we evaluate the safety and possible treatment effect of adding further stiffness to the palate through the use of a more rigid implant. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized double-blind study of 20 patients with primary snoring. Three polyethylene teralphate implants were placed in the soft palate with the patient under local anesthesia. Ten patients received regular implants (rigidity 1.0) and 10 patients received stiffer implants (rigidity 1.8). The patients and their bed partners were followed for 6 mon

Effect of bilateral facetectomy of thoracolumbar spine T11-L1 on spinal stability.

Spinal stenosis can be found in any part of the spine, though it is most commonly located on the lumbar and cervical areas. It has been documented in the literature that bilateral facetectomy in a lumbar motion segment to increase the space induces an increase in flexibility at the level at which the surgery was performed. However, the result of bilateral facetectomy on the stability of the thoracolumbar spine has not been studied. A nonlinear three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of thoracolumbar T11-L1 was built to explore the influence of bilateral facetectomy. The FE model of T11-L1

Biomechanics of grade I degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis. Part 1: in vitro model.

OBJECT: The authors sought to create and to evaluate an in vitro model of Grade I degenerative (closed-arch) spondylolisthesis. METHODS: The model of spondylolisthesis was created by two primary procedures: 1) resection of the disc; and 2) stripping of anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments away from the vertebral bodies (VBs). In 13 vertebral levels obtained from three cadaveric lumbar spines, the tissues were resected sequentially in alternating order to determine the relative contribution of each resection to spinal instability. The entire specimens were loaded with nonconstraining

Light-curing reinforcement for denture base resin using a glass fiber cloth pre-impregnated with various urethane oligomers.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the flexural properties of denture base resin reinforced using glass fiber cloth and a urethane oligomer. The five types of oligomer used in this study were S5, S9, S3, U4, and U6, which have varying functional groups and viscosities. The flexural properties of S9 with glass fiber cloth could not be measured because S9 is elastic. In the heat-cured resin reinforced with S9, the reinforcement peeled away from the resin. In the self- and light-cured resins reinforced with S9, the flexural properties increased significantly. When reinforced with the ot

Clinical evaluations of dorsiflexion assist controlled by spring ankle-foot orthosis for hemiplegic patients.

To examine the usefulness of Dorsiflexion Assist Controlled by Spring Ankle-Foot Orthoses (DACS-AFO), 5 hemiplegic patients in Brunnstrom's recovery stage IV were prescribed the DACS-AFO, after which their gait with the DACS-AFO was clinically evaluated. Clinical observation did not reveal that their gait with the DACS-AFO was better than that with an AFO which the patients usually used, except when one patient walked on a slope. No significant difference in 10 m walking time was found between when the DACS-AFO and shoehorn type AFO were used. Subjective evaluations by the patients indicated t
