Between 1971 and 1975 we performed 1580 dynamic perfusion studies in 1411 patients. The patients were admitted to the nuclear medicine depar … ion between our study, the EEG-curves and results of the morphological brain investigations such as pneumoencephalography or ACT-scans.

Audiological and radiological advances and refinement of microsurgical techniques have facilitated the diagnosis and excision of very small acoustic nerve tumours with a low morbidity and mortality. Is this cost effective? In an attempt to answer this question, an analysis of 66 cases of surgically treated acoustic neuromas is presented. This represents a part of a series of otoneurosurgical procedures carried out at Addenbrooke's Hospital over the last five years. By studying the relative morbidity of early and late surgical intervention in these cases, and by costing the exercise, the justif

In a 27-year-old patient with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome a pineal tumor had been found 10 years previously and was apparently a coincidental finding. Minute calcifications were later detected around the third ventricle and the mesencephalic periaqueductal gray matter by high resolution computed tomography. It is argued that this observation may support Devinsky's speculations that midbrain involvement has pathological significance for the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

A case of the Joubert Syndrome is reported. This syndrome, of which 11 cases have hitherto been described, is characterized by aplasia of the cerebellar vermis in addition to episodic hyperpnoea, abnormal eye movements, rhythmic protrusion of the tongue, ataxia, and mental retardation. The diagnosis was made by the clinical symptoms, computerized axial tomography of the brain, and lumbar pneumencephalography. Bilateral typical colobomata of retina and choroid were an additional anomaly, described for the first time in association with the Joubert Syndrome. The possible relationship between the

A sibship consisting of three siblings, one male and two females with unrelated parents, showed a clinical syndrome including: infantile spasms with hypsarrhythmia, microcephaly, severe mental retardation and spastic quadriplegia. The pneumoencephalogram performed in two sibs showed agenesis of the corpus callosum and aqueductal stenosis with tri-ventricular dilatation. The disorder did not show a progressive course with deterioration of mental and neurologic functions. No biochemical or cytogenetic defect could be identified. Complement fixation for cytomegalovirus was negative. This syndrome

A 2 and a half year-old boy with neurofibromatosis developed unilateral proptosis, decreased visual acuity, and optic disk edema. After the discovery and removal of an optic nerve glioma, the patient had ten years of excellent health until he began having headaches, nausea, and vomiting. He had papilledema in his remaining eye. At exploration, a cerebellar astrocytoma and a neuroglial hamartoma were removed. The occurrence of a glioma of right anterior visual pathway associated with other primary intracranial lesions in patients with neurofibromatosis was not previously reported.

The angiographic cerebral midline is described. It is pointed out that the midline may be abnormally undisplaced despite the presence of a unilateral or bilateral expansive lesion. The causes of such abnormal non-displacement of the midline are reviewed in the light of examples, and the importance is stressed of bilateral carotid angiograms, sometimes with oblique series, in the case of head injuries and certain tumors.

Experience with 25 cases of tumour of the third ventricle in children is reviewed. The majority of the lesions were infiltrating astrocytomas of the anterior and mid-portions of the third ventricle. These tumours were generally inoperable. However, other tumours within the third ventricle were benign, encapsulated, and resectable. Surgical exposure was carried out through one of three routes: posterior fossa, transcallosal, or subfrontal. The radiological criteria by which the operative approach is determined are discussed.

This paper reviews the clinical findings in the Hakim-Adams syndrome and distinguishes it from the more general term of normal pressure hydrocephalus. The radiographic tests to diagnose these entities are discussed in their historical context. Computed tomography has recently replaced the pneumoencephalogram for evaluating ventricular size and configuration and computed tomographic metrizamide cisternography is beginning to replace the more traditional radionuclide studies of cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. A protocol is suggested for the future study of Hakim-Adams syndrome which emphasizes str
