Effects of dietary supplementation of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides on growth performance, immune status, antioxidant capacity and selected microbial populations of weaned piglets.

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) are a complex mixture of highly branched and partially characterised polysaccharides and proteoglycans extracted from the goji berry. This mixture has great potential as a novel feed supplement for pigs. Two trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of supplementation with LBPs on the growth performance, immune status, antioxidant capacity and selected intestinal microbial populations in weaned piglets. In trial 1, a total of 400 weaned piglets [(Yorkshire × Landrace) × Duroc] with an average body weight (BW) of 6.34 ± 0.16 kg (21 days of age) were di

Comparison of Cerebroplacental Ratio, Intergrowth-21st Standards, Customized Growth, and Local Population References for the Prediction of Fetal Compromise: Which Is the Best Approach?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to compare the accuracy of the cerebroplacental ratio (CPR), Intergrowth 21st standards (IG21), customized growth (CG), and local population references (LPR) in the prediction of intrapartum fetal compromise (IFC). METHODS: This was a prospective study of 714 fetuses that underwent an ultrasound examination at 34-41 weeks and were delivered within a 2-week interval. The CPR was converted into multiples of the median and the estimated fetal weight (EFW) transformed into CG, IG21, and LPR centiles. IFC was defined as a composite of abnormal cardiotocogram, in

Partially Hydrolyzed Whey Infant Formula: Literature Review on Effects on Growth and the Risk of Developing Atopic Dermatitis in Infants from the General Population.

Limited evidence is available regarding the effect of partially hydrolyzed whey-based formula (pHF-W) on growth and atopic dermatitis (AD) risk reduction in infants within the general infant population, and without a familial history of allergy as an inclusion or exclusion criterion. We reviewed the current evidence available from studies using pHF-W in the general population and summarized the data on safety (growth) and efficacy outcomes (reduction of AD), comparing the studies side by side. A total of 8 clinical trials were identified from the literature search, 7 of which used the same pHF

Effect of Disturbance on Population Structure and Regeneration of Abies fargesii var. faxoniana (Rehder & E.H.Wilson): Mild Disturbance Promotes Growth, Severe Disturbance Leads to Decline.

Plant population structure and regeneration are effected by species traits, environmental conditions, and anthropogenic disturbance. Abies fargesii var. faxoniana (Rehder & E.H.Wilson), As a major constructive tree species in extreme high-altitude habitats on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, the population structure, regeneration status, and development trends under different disturbance intensities remain unclear. We established plots of A. faxoniana natural forests under varying disturbance levels (seven each for mild, moderate, and severe disturbance), investigated population age s

Inhibitory binding to plastoquinone B site on D1 protein of photosystem II leading to decreased population growth rate via disruption of cellular energy metabolism.

Photosystem II (PSII) is essential for photosynthesis in primary producers, facilitating the primary photochemical reaction to oxidize water … d ATP production, resulting in reduced growth at the individual level, and culminating in decreased population growth rate in primary producers. By systematically linking molecular interactions to population-level outcomes, AOP #567 provides a transparent and biologically plausible framework to assess hazard and aid environmental risks of PSII-inhibitors.

Fetal cardiac remodeling in second trimester in pregnancies with pre-eclampsia and/or fetal growth restriction: deep-learning-based approach using population-wide data.

OBJECTIVE: Pre-eclampsia (PE) and fetal growth restriction (FGR) have been shown to impact fetal cardiac remodeling in the third trimester and postnatally, with evidence to suggest that this leads to increased long-term cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to examine fetal cardiac remodeling in pregnancies with PE and/or FGR during the second trimester. METHODS: This was a retrospective nationwide cohort study of ultrasound images from routine screening at 18-22 weeks of gestation in Denmark. We included 139 430 singleton pregnancies that were conceived spontaneously for which at least one r

Prenatal Exposure to Nitrate from Drinking Water and Markers of Fetal Growth Restriction: A Population-Based Study of Nearly One Million Danish-Born Children.

BACKGROUND: High levels of nitrate (NO3-) in drinking water cause methemoglobinemia in infants; however, few studies have examined the potential effects of low-level exposure on fetal growth, and the results have been inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the association between maternal exposure to nitrate in drinking water during pregnancy and offspring size at birth in a nationwide study of full-term (≥37 wk gestation) live-born singletons. METHODS: We estimated maternal nitrate exposure for 898,206 births in Denmark during 1991-2011 by linkage of individual home address(es) with

Mediating roles of preterm birth and restricted fetal growth in the relationship between maternal education and infant mortality: A Danish population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic disparities in infant mortality have persisted for decades in high-income countries and may have become stronger in some populations. Therefore, new understandings of the mechanisms that underlie socioeconomic differences in infant deaths are essential for creating and implementing health initiatives to reduce these deaths. We aimed to explore whether and the extent to which preterm birth (PTB) and small for gestational age (SGA) at birth mediate the association between maternal education and infant mortality. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We developed a population-based coh

Association study between keratinocyte-derived growth factor gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to vitiligo vulgaris in a Taiwanese population: potential involvement of stem cell factor.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo vulgaris is a depigmentary disorder resulting from the disappearance of functional melanocytes. Currently, the pathogenesis of this disorder remains obscure. OBJECTIVES: Genetic analysis of patients with vitilgo may provide important clues for elucidating the complex pathomechanisms involved in the disease process. Because dysfunctional keratinocytes have recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of vitiligo vulgaris, we conducted a case-control association study to investigate this phenomenon. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-one patients with vitiligo vulgaris and 118 he

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Seroprevalence and Incidence and Growth of Ultrasound-Diagnosed Uterine Fibroids in a Large Population of Young African-American Women.

Reproductive tract infections have long been hypothesized to be risk factors for development of uterine fibroids, but few studies have investigated the issue. In our 2016 cross-sectional analysis from the Study of Environment, Lifestyle and Fibroids (2010-2018), a large Detroit, Michigan, community-based cohort study of 23- to 35-year-old African-American women with ultrasound fibroid screening, we found no association between a very prevalent reproductive tract infection, herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), and fibroids. With prospective data from the cohort (ultrasounds performed every 20 m

Factors affecting the growth of children till the age of three years with overweight whose mothers have diabetes mellitus: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) during pregnancy and childhood obesity is increasing worldwide. Factors affecting the growth of children with overweight whose mothers had DM are complicated and inconclusive. Few longitudinal studies have focused on the growth of infants with macrosomia born to mothers with DM and the factors influencing their overweight. This study explored risk factors for childhood overweight/obesity (OWOB) among children of mothers with DM. Perinatal, maternal socio-demographic, infant care, and maternal body weight characteristics as well as child grow

Preterm birth and later insulin resistance: effects of birth weight and postnatal growth in a population based longitudinal study from birth into adult life.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: An increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with low birthweight after full-term gestation, including amplification of this risk by weight gain during infancy and adult body composition. Premature birth is also associated with insulin resistance, but studies conducted so far have not provided follow-up into adulthood. We studied the effects of (1) lower birthweight (as standard deviation score [SDS]) and infancy weight gain on insulin resistance in 19-year-olds born before 32 weeks of gestation, and (2) the interaction between lower birthweight SDS and infancy

Dietary seaweed-derived polysaccharides improve growth performance of weaned pigs through maintaining intestinal barrier function and modulating gut microbial populations.

BACKGROUND: Seaweed-derived polysaccharides (SDP) represent an attractive source of prebiotic nutraceuticals for the food and animal husbandry industry. However, the mechanism by which SDP from Enteromorpha mediates pig growth are not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate how SDP supplementation influences the growth performance and intestinal health in weaned pigs. RESULTS: In Exp. 1, 240 weaned pigs were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments and fed with a basal diet or a basal diet containing 200, 400 or 800 mg/kg SDP, respectively, in a 21-day trial. Population Growth of Varroa destructor (Acari: Varroidae) in Colonies of Russian and Unselected Honey Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Stocks as Related to Numbers of Foragers With Mites.

Varroa (Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman) is an external parasite of honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) and a leading cause of colony losses worldwide. Varroa populations can be controlled with miticides, but mite-resistant stocks such as the Russian honey bee (RHB) also are available. Russian honey bee and other mite-resistant stocks limit Varroa population growth by affecting factors that contribute to mite reproduction. However, mite population growth is not entirely due to reproduction. Numbers of foragers with mites (FWM) entering and leaving hives also affect the growth of mite populat…
