A system for automatic feedback control of plasma potassium concentration.

A system is described for automatic feedback control of plasma potassium concentration in experimental animals. Plasma potassium was monitored continuously and the signal compared with the desired plasma potassium concentration. The resulting error signal controlled the infusion rates of a concentrated potassium chloride solution (50 or 200 mmol litre-1) and a solution of 50% glucose with insulin 200 u litre-1. Plasma potassium was increased or decreased to the desired concentration at various rates, dictated by the controller constants. Increases were achieved significantly faster than reduct…

Effects of ethanol, potassium metabisulfite, formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide on gastric carcinogenesis in rats after initiation with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine.

Ethanol, potassium metabisulfite, formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide were tested for tumor-promoting activity in a two-stage stomach carcinogenesis experiment. Male outbred Wistar rats were given N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) in the drinking water (100 mg/liter) and a diet supplemented with 10% sodium chloride for 8 weeks. Thereafter, they were maintained on drinking water containing either 10% ethanol, 1% potassium metabisulfite, 0.5% formalin (formaldehyde) or 1% hydrogen peroxide for 32 weeks and then sacrificed for necropsy and histological examination. In the pylorus of the

Direct effects of salicylate on renal function in the dog.

Sodium salicylate was administered to anesthetized dogs in doses sufficient to produce concentrations in plasma comparable to those common in human salicylate toxicity. Salicylate administration increased the rates of excretion of water, sodium, and chloride in the urine. Salicylate administration also increased the rate of excretion of potassium so that its clearance often exceeded that of creatinine. This enhancement of potassium excretion was dissociated from the alkalosis that accompanies salicyate toxicity. Administration of 5% CO(2) in inspired gas did not attenuate the excretion of pota

Effect of postpartum drenching on plasma parameters of cows at a large-scale dairy farm.

The aim of the present study was to explore the influence of postpartum drenching with a feed additive on the plasma concentration of biochemical parameters while factoring in prepartum rumination times (RT). One hundred and sixty-one cows were fitted with a Ruminact© HR-Tag approximately 5 days before calving. Drenching and control groups were established based on calving dates. Animals in the drenched group were treated three times (Day 1/day of calving/, Day 2, and Day 3 postpartum) using a feed additive containing calcium propionate, magnesium sulphate, yeast, potassium chloride and sodium…

Ventricular extrasystoles and intracellular electrolytes before and after potassium and magnesium infusions in patients on diuretic treatment.

Thirty-four patients suspected of being magnesium deficient were given intravenous infusions of potassium and magnesium. The muscle contents of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry on skeletal muscle samples obtained by percutaneous biopsies. The frequency of ventricular etopic beats (VEBs) was assessed from a 3-hour ECG tape recording before the infusions and after the completion of each infusion. The potassium infusions did not result in any changes in the cellular potassium content, nor in the frequency of VEBs. After the magnesiu

Exploring the Role of the SLC12A Cation-Coupled Chloride Cotransporters in the Cardiovascular System.

Cardiomyopathies are a major category of cardiovascular disease, significantly contributing to global morbidity and mortality. Their pathogenesis involves a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors, with multiple gene families playing critical roles in disease progression. Among these, the Solute Carrier 12A (SLC12A) family encodes membrane cation-coupled chloride cotransporters (CCCs), which are essential for ion transport and cellular homeostasis. By regulating intracellular chloride and potassium concentrations, SLC12A/CCC transporters may directly influence myocardial electro

Potassium supplements in patients receiving long-term diuretics for oedema.

Plasma, blood cell, and total body potassium levels were measured serially in 21 patients receiving long-term diuretics for the treatment of cardiac oedema and the results compared with similar measurements in 10 control subjects. Initially, all diuretic recipients received potassium chloride supplements. However, in 17 of the 21 subjects these were discontinued and measurements of potassium status were repeated regularly thereafter. No significant fall in the measured indicators of potassium status were observed in the patients in whom potassium was withdrawn; however, in one subject with per…

Differences of draining lymph node cell proliferation among mice, rats and guinea pigs following exposure to metal allergens.

Contact sensitivities of three well known metal allergens (nickel sulfate, potassium dichromate and cobalt chloride) were examined using the local lymph node assay in CBA/N mice, F344 rats and Hartley guinea pigs. The effect of various species sera on lymph node cell (LNC) proliferation was also investigated. Exposure to potassium dichromate and cobalt chloride induced significant LNC proliferative responses in the three species. The LNC responses to potassium dichromate in the rats were higher than those in the mice and guinea pigs. Mice exhibited the highest response to cobalt chloride among

Molecular actions of diuretics.

The criteria upon which diuretics are classified is based upon their site of action within the nephron. Carboanhydrase inhibitors act in the proximal tubule, high-ceiling diuretics in the ascending loop of Henle, the thiazides in the early distal tubule and the potassium-sparing diuretics in the late distal tubule and in the collecting duct. On the molecular level diuretics do not inhibit Na+-K+-ATPase but interfere with the permeability of the tubule membranes or transport systems for certain ions and thus also influence the potential differences in the different parts of the nephron. Since c

Potassium depletion and salt-sensitive hypertension in Dahl rats: effect on calcium, magnesium, and phosphate excretions.

Weanling male inbred Dahl rats (Jr salt-sensitive (S) and salt-resistant (R) strains) were placed on high (4%, HK) and low (0.2%, LK) potassium diets for 4 weeks. Both diets contained 8% sodium chloride, 2.5% calcium, 0.8% magnesium, and 2.0% phosphorous. Balance studies were carried out during the final week on the diets. Mean arterial blood pressure was determined, and dietary intake and urinary output of water, sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphate were monitored daily during this period. The data show that blood pressures of S rats were significantly higher than th

An improved terminology and classification of Bartter-like syndromes.

This Review outlines a terminology and classification of Bartter-like syndromes that is based on the underlying causes of these inherited salt-losing tubulopathies and is, therefore, more clinically relevant than the classical definition. Three major types of salt-losing tubulopathy can be defined: distal convoluted tubule dysfunction leading to hypokalemia (currently known as Gitelman or Bartter syndrome), the more-severe condition of polyuric loop dysfunction (often referred to as antenatal Bartter or hyperprostaglandin E syndrome), and the most-severe condition of combined loop and distal c

'Sick cell' hyponatraemia and gastrointestinal electrolyte loss.

A patient with protracted vomiting was noted to have hyponatraemia and hypokalaemia on admission. Isotope dilution studies before treatment revealed profound body depletion of sodium, potassium and water. Treatment with potassium chloride tablets produced a simultaneous rise in serum sodium and potassium concentration without change in urine volume or osmolality, or body weight. Potassium depletion appears to have contributed to the mechanism of hyponatraemia in this situation, and that replacement of potassium corrected hyponatraemia by effectively re-distributing solute and water across the …

Toxicity, bioaccumulation, and interactive effects of organotin, cadmium, and chromium on Artemia franciscana.

The effects of three organotin compounds-trimethyltin chloride, dimethyltin dichloride, and dibutyltin diacetate-and two heavy metals-cadmium and hexavalent chromium-on Artemia franciscana mortality are investigated in this study. Of all the compounds tested in this work, trimethyltin chloride was, by far, the most toxic. The toxicity order for the five compounds was trimethyltin chloride > potassium dichromate > dimethyltin dichloride > dibutyltin diacetate > cadmium chloride. The big difference in toxicity between dialkyltin and trialkyltin was not accompanied by an equally big difference in
