Source contributions and mechanisms underlying reduced precipitation acidity in the Lingang New Area of Shanghai.

Dissolved sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and organic acids in precipitation can lower rainwater pH and affect ecosystems and infrastructure. Although precipitation acidity and acid rain frequency have declined in Shanghai in recent years, the factors driving this change remain insufficiently understood, especially in rapidly urbanizing coastal areas. In this study, precipitation samples were collected throughout 2024 in the Lingang New Area of Shanghai to investigate rainwater chemistry and the processes associated with reduced acidity. Major ions, dissolved organic carbon (DOC),

Relationship between number of human Japanese encephalitis cases and summer meteorological conditions in Nagasaki, Japan.

Analysis of epidemiological and meteorological data for Nagasaki Prefecture, southwest Japan, for the period 1950-1979, showed a correlation between size of epidemics of human Japanese encephalitis (JE) and weather factors. It was demonstrated that during the period 1950-1969 the epidemic size (ES) had two types of correlation: ES correlated inversely with total summer precipitation, and ES correlated directly with mean summer temperature. The fact that in the 1970s there were fewer cases of JE cannot be attributed to changes in the weather factors. Large epidemics occurred in summers with low

Identification of platelet proteins that bind alloantibodies and autoantibodies.

We have used the techniques of radioimmunoprecipitation (RIP) and Western blot to identify the membrane proteins that bind certain alloantibodies. Anti-PlA1 sera precipitated two bands, corresponding to platelet glycoproteins IIb and III, whether or not calcium was present during the procedure. By Western blot, this antibody bound only glycoprotein III. Anti-PlA1 serum does not precipitate proteins from the platelets of a patient with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia. Two monoclonal antibodies reacting with lymphocyte HLA antigens, as well as sera from highly allosensitized patients, precipitated ba

Caring for patients with acute intermittent porphyria.

The porphyrias are a group of metabolic disorders of heme biosynthesis genetically determined defects. Acute intermittent porphyria is the most common form of porphyria found in the United States. It is caused by a genetic defect in chromosome 11, where one of two genes for porphobilinogen deaminase is defective. Acute intermittent porphyria is characterized by intermittent, acute, occasionally fatal attacks of abdominal, neurologic, psychiatric, and renal symptoms. Attacks are often confused with acute abdomen or bowel obstruction. A variety of drug, hormonal, nutritional, and infectious fact

Factor VIII-related activities in therapeutic concentrates.

Recent studies have suggested that factor VIII exists in plasma as a complex containing two distinct antigens (VIII R:Ag and VIII C:Ag) and two different biological activities (VIII:C and VIII R:RCo). Concentrations of these four entities have been measured in all the different types of therapeutic material used for treatment of hemophilia and von Willebrand's disease. In all materials, the ratio of VIII R:Ag to VIII:C was greater than 1: however, there were significant differences between concentrates, and the lowest ratio was found in cryoprecipitate. In VIII R:Ag assays, the freeze-dried co

Natural history and determinants of clinical severity of sickle cell disease.

Some of the factors determining the extremely variable clinical course of homozygous sickle cell disease are being identified. Genetic factors include alpha-thalassemia, beta-globin gene haplotypes, heterocellular hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin, and high total hemoglobin. Other factors include a variety of environmental variables and socioeconomic status. These risk factors, when occurring in conjunction with apparently random precipitating events, produce features of the disease. Many complications--which are age specific, with highest morbidity and mortality in the first 5 years-

The role of biomechanical factors in ankylosing spondylitis: the patient's perspective.

Biomechanical factors including occupational joint physical stressing and joint injury have been linked to spondyloarthritis. We explored such factors in ankylosing spondylitis (AS). A retrospective, online survey was developed alongside the UK National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS). Questions on early entheseal symptoms, potential precipitating trauma, sporting activity, and physiotherapy were asked. A total of 1026 patients responded with 44% recalling an instance of injury or trauma as a potential trigger for their AS. After symptom onset, 55% modified sporting activities and 28% re

Hepatic encephalopathy in Saudi Arabia: retrospective analysis of 51 patients.

The clinical features, prognostic factors, and outcome of 51 patients with hepatic encephalopathy (HE), were retrospectively reviewed. The mean (+/- SD) age of patients was 47.2 (+/- 14.8) years. Seventy-five percent of patients were males and 73% were Saudi. All identified episodes of hepatic encephalopathy were associated with chronic underlying liver disease and no episode occurred as a result of acute fulminant hepatic failure. Most patients presented in advanced stage of hepatic dysfunction and had one or more precipitating factors. In-hospital mortality rate was 41% (21 out of 51 patient

Spontaneous Retroperitoneal Haematoma due to Polyarteritis Nodosa: Report of a Case and Literature Review.

Retroperitoneal haematoma is a rare clinical entity with variable etiology. It can happen spontaneously, without any obvious precipitating factors, the so-called spontaneous retroperitoneal haematoma. There is no general consensus as to the best management plan for patients with retroperitoneal haematoma. Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a rare cause of retroperitoneal haematoma. Here we report relationship between PAN and retroperitoneal haematoma and treatment approaches. However, an accepted and clearly defined treatment has not been established due to its rarity.

The use of isoproterenol and phenytoin to reverse torsade de pointes.

Torsade de pointes is a form of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia that differs from other forms of ventricular tachycardia in its morphology, precipitating factors, and therapeutic approach. Its recognition is of utmost importance, as the standard anti-arrythmic drugs not only might be ineffective in its termination but also may aggravate it. Herein, we report a case of antipsychotic-induced torsade de pointes and describe the use of magnesium sulfate, isoproterenol, and phenytoin and their proposed mechanism of action.

Rhabdomyolysis due to the additive effect of statin therapy and hypothyroidism: a case report.

We describe a patient with previously undiagnosed hypothyroidism who developed rhabdomyolysis while taking a statin. He had no other precipitating factors. The statin was stopped, intravenous fluids were started immediately and L-thyroxin was given after confirming the diagnosis of hypothyroidism. His symptoms improved over a few days. Because rhabdomyolysis is a rare but potentially life threatening disorder when complicated by acute tubular necrosis and renal failure, physicians must pay special attention when starting statins in patients with hyperlipidemia.

Portal-systemic encephalopathy and hepatic coma.

Decompensation in the cirrhotic patient is typically manifested as hepatic encephalopathy or coma. This may be precipitated by azotemia, gastrointestinal bleeding, infection, hypokalemic alkalosis, excess dietary protein, or the use of sedative, tranquilizer, or analgesic medications. The pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy associated with portal-systemic shunting is unknown, but theories purporting major roles for ammonia, AAAs, false neurotransmitters, and GABA have been advanced. Treatment is aimed at removing precipitating factors and eliminating nitrogenous substances from the gastroin

Inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion in premature infants with cerebral injury.

We describe 11 premature infants with the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). The syndrome is far more common than the single case report in the literature would indicate. All the infants had either asphyxiation at birth, intracranial hemorrhage, or meningitis. Of the nine children available for follow-up observation, seven demonstrated serious neurological sequelae. The diagnosis of SIADH in the premature neonate may be difficult to establish due to the complexity of precipitating factors.

Acute renal dysfunction in a patient presenting with rhabdomyolysis due to Hypothyroidism attributed to Hashimoto's Disease.

We describe a patient with rhabdomyolysis and acute renal dysfunction due to hypothyroidism, attributed to Hashimoto's disease. Though rhabdomyolysis could be life-threatening, it is a rare complication of hypothyroidism, especially when other precipitating factors, such as exercise, alcohol, medications or renal failure, are absent. Nevertheless, hypothyroidism can be an authentic cause of rhabdomyolysis and should always be considered when elevated creatine kinase (CK) and other muscle enzymes concentrations cannot be attributed to any major factor.

[Transient diplopia].

Transient binocular diplopia is a frequent complaint in an everyday ophthalmic practice. Since the objective clinical examination is most often within normal limits between the diplopia attacks, a thorough history is mandatory to determine the possible causes and precipitating factors. Although transient diplopia can herald visual or even life-threatening associated conditions, it is most often related to benign diseases. An appropriate work-up depends on the history and the clinical evaluation, targeting specific underlying causes.

Chronic pigmented purpura associated with odontogenic infection.

Five patients with chronic pigmented purpura associated with odontogenic infection are described. Four patients had Schamberg's disease, and one had itching purpura. These patients were resistant to topical corticosteroid treatment, but appearance of purpuric spots ceased after treatment for periodontitis, pulpitis, or both. No circulating immune complexes were detected, and neither immunoglobulin nor complement was deposited in the papillary vessels of the skin. Odontogenic infection might be one of the precipitating factors for chronic pigmented purpura.

[Removal of calcium and high-strength ammonia nitrogen from the wastewater of rare-earth elements hydrometallurgical process by chemical precipitation].

A lot of high-strength ammonia nitrogen wastewater is generated in the ion-type rare-earth elements hydrometallurgical process. Magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) precipitation was chosen to remove the ammonia nitrogen from the wastewater after Ca2+ was eliminated using Na2CO3 to generate CaCO3 precipitate, because the wastewater contained a lot of Ca2+, and Ca2+ was an important impact factor for MAP precipitation. Central composite design (CCD) is a principal response surface methodology (RSM) used in experimental design. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the factors in
