Periodontal health and global public health.

Chronic diseases are a growing burden to people, to health-care systems and to societies across the world. The rapid increase in the burden of chronic diseases is particularly prevalent in the developing countries. Periodontal disease is one of the two most important oral diseases contributing to the global burden of chronic disease. In addition to social determinants, periodontal health status is related to several proximal factors. Modifiable risk factors, such as tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet and nutrition, obesity, psychological stress and insufficient personal/oral

Impact of sucking habits on dental occlusion in preschool children: A cross-sectional study.

AIM: To evaluate the relationship between sucking habits (such as thumb sucking and pacifier use) and dental occlusion in preschool children. BACKGROUND: The functional development of the oral cavity can be altered by sucking habits in infancy. It is important to know how these can influence the development of malocclusions in the primary dentition and, consequently, can help us to prevent them or reduce the risk factors in the permanent dentition. MATERIALS: This cross-sectional study was conducted between January 2022 to January 2023. The sample consisted of 314 patients aged 2 to 5 years

The Paradoxes of Phantom Bite Syndrome or Occlusal Dysaesthesia (‘Dysesthesia’).

Phantom bite syndrome was first described by Marbach over 40 years ago as a mono-symptomatic hypochondriacal psychosis. He used the term to describe a prolonged syndrome in which patients report that their ‘bite is wrong’ or that ‘their dental occlusion is abnormal’ with this causing them great difficulties. This strong belief about ‘their bite’ being the source of their problems leads to them demanding, and subsequently getting, various types of dentistry carried out by multiple dentists and ‘specialists’. Sadly, even after exhaustive, painstaking, careful treatment, none of the dental treatm

The face of a child: children's oral health and dental education.

Dental care is the most common unmet health care need of children. Those at increased risk for problems with oral health and access to care are from poor or minority families, lack health insurance, or have special health care needs. These factors place more than 52 percent of children at risk for untreated oral disease. Measures of access and parental report indicate unmet oral health needs, but do not provide guidance as to the nature of children's oral health needs. Children's oral health needs can be predicted from their developmental changes and position in the life span. their dependency

Racial Disparities in Access to Preventive Dental Services in Pediatric Population: A Secondary Data Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Though preventive measures are available to alleviate the burden of dental caries, there remain racial disparities in the utilization of preventative dental care. Our objectives were to determine whether racial disparities persisted in receiving preventive oral procedures between (1) Black children and white children; and (2) Hispanic children and white children. METHODS: We used pooled Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data in the United States from 2018 to 2021. The key outcome variable involved the use of preventive dental services (ie, examination, x-rays, cleani

Risk-based approach in preventive practice among Iranian dentists.

PURPOSE: To study risk-based preventive practice among Iranian dentists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted at two annual dental meetings in 2004 and 2005 in Tehran. Using a five-point Likert scale, respondents indicated their level of agreement with taking preventive measures including oral hygiene, use of fluoride, diet and dental check-up for a high- and a low-risk (HR and LR, respectively) hypothetical patient case. Respondent's smoking and activity in smoking cessation were enquired about as well. Of 1033 responding dentists, 980 (64% men) were eligible for this

Bibliometric Analysis on Enamel Remineralization Agents.

Dental caries remains a major global oral health concern, affecting almost 2.5 billion people. While restorative treatments remain widely used, modern dentistry increasingly focuses on preventive and minimally invasive approaches that strengthen the natural process of enamel remineralization. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed for enamel remineralization agents from 2015 to 2025. Clinical trials, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses published in English were included. After screening, 153 publications were retained. RStudio (Biblioshiny pac

The three-dimensionality of the "gummy smile".

The "gummy smile" is a complex developmental issue that requires a three-dimensional approach to diagnosis and treatment. This article explores the multifaceted nature of the gummy smile, tracing its origins to early childhood growth patterns and breathing dysfunctions. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the interplay between skeletal development, soft tissue function, and breathing modalities in the formation of craniofacial structures. The article discusses how early mouth breathing and tongue dysfunction can lead to maladaptive skeletal growth, resulting in vertical maxillary exc

Increasing dentists' capacity for secondary prevention of eating disorders: identification of training, network, and professional contingencies.

The incidence of eating disorders has increased substantially over the last forty years. Primary care physicians and dentists share a parallel challenge for secondary prevention of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The dentist, in particular, has a uniquely important and valuable role with respect to assessment of oral and physical manifestations, patient communication, referral, case management, and restorative care. Despite this crucial role, few dentists are engaged in eating disorder-specific secondary prevention. The purpose of this study was to explore beliefs, attitudes, and experie
