Initial Experience with a Novel Pericardiocentesis Training Simulator Incorporating a Three-dimensional Printed Cardiac Model.

Pericardial effusion is a rare but serious complication in cardiac electrophysiology procedures. To avoid progression to acute tamponade and reduce the risk of adverse patient outcomes, emergent pericardiocentesis is often necessary. The conduct of more pericardiocentesis training may further mitigate this risk. However, teaching and practice opportunities are rare, creating the need for pericardiocentesis simulators. While various pericardiocentesis simulators exist, their applications have been limited; further, commercial simulators are anatomically realistic but can be expensive. As such,

[A Simulation Surgery of Valve-sparing Aortic Root Replacement Using a Three-dimensional Printed Model].

Aortic valve-sparing surgery is a delicate procedure that requires specialized skills to control aortic valve regurgitation. Therefore, simulating the surgery before performing it on a patient is good practice for inexperienced surgeons. Herein, we present our experience of a simulation surgery using a three-dimensionally printed aortic root model of a 60-year-old man with severe aortic regurgitation and aortic root enlargement. We fabricated the model using multi-slice computed tomography data. The model revealed the two pitfalls:unbalanced commissure position and lower coaptation height of t

A Fully Multi-Material Three-Dimensional Printed Soft Gripper with Variable Stiffness for Robust Grasping.

Multi-material three-dimensional (3D) printing has provided the possibility of direct 3D printing of soft actuators with high complexity and functionality in a fast and easy fabrication process. In this article, we present the design of a multi-material 3D printed variable stiffness soft robotic gripper to ensure grasping robustness during high acceleration. The proposed gripper contains two identical soft fingers, with each finger including a pneumatic actuator and an integrated layer jamming unit. Prototypes of the soft finger, with material hardness transfer from the soft-bodied actuator to

Apical Muscular Ventricular Septal Defects: Surgical Strategy Using Three-Dimensional Printed Model.

To evaluate the utility of a three-dimensional printed model (3D-model) for surgical decision planning in a complex case of multiple ventricular septal defect (VSD) (so-called Swiss-cheese septum). A 3 month-old-girl with diagnosis of multiple apical VSDs in the trabecular septum, perimembranous VSD, and atrial septal defect that resulted in congestive heart failure was referred for surgical intervention. Due to inconclusive understanding of the total number, openings and locations of the apical VSDs, there were concerns regarding the best surgical approach. Using computed tomography images, a

Three-Dimensionally Printed Individual Drill Sleeve for Depth-Controlled Sections in Third Molar Surgery.

During surgical third molar removal and coronectomy procedures, tooth sectioning is an important and, in some cases, an inferior alveolar nerve-endangering step. This article introduces a drilling sleeve that was printed according to the individual tooth-sectioning situation preoperatively, using diagnostic cone-beam computed tomography data. Not only did the sleeve function in our case as a mark on the drill; it was also a reliable physical limiter, serving as a determinant of the required depth during tooth sectioning. This fast and cost-effectively produced drilling sleeve may help younger

Three-dimensional printing as a technology supporting the treatment of lower limb deformity and shortening with the Ilizarov method.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of multiplanar deformities, especially in younger children, requires construction of a complex Ilizarov fixator, frequently with small dimensions. The aim of this study is to verify clinical application of a3D-printed bone model in treatment with the Ilizarov method. METHODS: The study involved a 6-year-old child in whom clinical and radiological examination revealed multiplanar deformity of the right leg. Then, 3D models of individual bones were printed by means of additive manufacturing and were used as a scaffold to install the Ilizarov apparatus. To compare the expec

Stenting of Complex Malignant Central-Airway Obstruction Guided by a Three-Dimensional Printed Model Of The Airways.

Conversion of anatomic images into physical objects using three-dimensional printing (3DP) is changing the way surgeons anticipate selected technical challenges. We report herein a case of malignant central airway obstruction in the right main bronchus. Because stenting of the primary right carina is difficult, as it depends on many diameters and distance measurements, we used 3DP to plan and guide the procedure. After virtual resolution of the extrinsic compression, a three-dimensional printed model of the airways helped us choose the model and dimensions of the stent, and allowed us to modif

Large Osseous Defect Reconstruction Using a Custom Three-Dimensional Printed Titanium Truss Implant.

Treatment of large osseous defects remains a difficult surgical challenge. Autografts and allografts have been known to undergo late collapse, because these options are not specifically designed to withstand the high loads of the foot and ankle. The inability to achieve the correct shape for reconstruction further limits their application. Large osseous defects will result during salvage after failed Lapidus bunionectomy, explantation of failed total ankle replacements, and nonunion of Evans calcaneal osteotomy. Each of 3 patients received a 4WEB custom 3-dimensional (3D) titanium truss implan

Optimization of print parameters for batch and continuous manufacturing of three-dimensional (3D) printed dosage forms using artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) holds significant potential for developing personalized pharmaceutical oral dosage forms (printlets). 3D printing has the advantage of fabricating complex geometric structures for versatile drug release profiles, enhancing patient preference, palatability and swallowability, reducing the pill burden, and increasing dose accuracy. Optimizing printing parameters is crucial in determining the quality of the printlets during dosage development. The integration of machine learning (ML) can reduce production costs and time through parameter optimization based on trai

Three-dimensional printing as a transformative platform for patient-centric pediatric drug delivery: technologies, formulation strategies and clinical translation.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric patients require age-appropriate dosage forms because developmental differences in physiology, pharmacokinetics and swallowing ability can significantly affect therapeutic outcomes. Conventional dosage forms are often unsuitable for children and practices such as tablet splitting, crushing or extemporaneous preparation may lead to dose inaccuracy, altered stability, poor palatability and reduced adherence. These limitations highlight the need for innovative formulation strategies that provide precise dosing while improving acceptability and therapeutic effectiveness. In t

Powder bed fusion- laser beam (PBF-LB) three-dimensional (3D) printing: layer by layer through different types of photoabsorbers.

Powder bed fusion-laser beam (PBF-LB) was used to investigate the influence of three Candurin® pigments (Gold Sheen, NXT Ruby Red and Orange Amber, 3 % w/w) on the fabrication of thin dosage forms composed of Parteck® MXP 4-88 and zolpidem tartrate (ZT). The effects of photoabsorber type, model thickness and build orientation were evaluated. Horizontally printed dosage forms generally showed greater dimensional accuracy, whereas vertical printing was associated with larger z-axis deviations and one-sided bending deformation, likely due to the greater number of deposited layers. A statistically

A Novel Strategy for Fabrication of Polyamide 66/Nanohydroxyapatite Composite Bone Repair Scaffolds by Low-Temperature Three-Dimensional Printing.

Due to the decomposition temperature of Polyamide 66 (PA66) in the environment is close to its thermoforming temperature, it is difficult to construct porous scaffolds of PA66/nanohydroxyapatite (PA66/HAp) by fused deposition modeling (FDM) three-dimensional (3D) printing. In this study, we demonstrated for the first time a method for 3D printing PA66/HAp composites at room temperature, prepared PA66/HAp printing ink using a mixed solvent of formic acid/dichloromethane (FA/DCM), and constructed a series of composite scaffolds with varying HAp content. This printing system can print composite m

Three-dimensional printing for preoperative rehearsal and intraoperative navigation during laparoscopic rectal cancer surgery with left colic artery preservation.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have shown that preserving the left colic artery (LCA) during laparoscopic radical resection for rectal cancer (RC) can reduce the occurrence of anastomotic leakage (AL), without compromising oncological outcomes. However, anatomical variations in the branches of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) and LCA present significant surgical challenges. In this study, we present our novel three dimensional (3D) printed IMA model designed to facilitate preoperative rehearsal and intraoperative navigation to analyze its impact on surgical safety. AIM: To investigate the effe
