Child Maltreatment, Early Adult Substance Use, and Mediation by Adolescent Behavior Problems.

The purpose of the current study was to examine the potential mediating effects of internalizing and externalizing problems at ages 14, 16 and 18 between types of childhood maltreatment and alcohol and marijuana use problems and disorders in young adulthood. Data were from 473 young adults who participated in the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN). Path analysis was conducted to examine pathways between maltreatment type (birth through age 12), internalizing and externalizing problems at three time points during adolescence, and alcohol and marijuana problem use in youn

The roles of child maltreatment types and peer relationships on behavior problems in early adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Although previous research has established that child maltreatment (CM) and peer relationships (i.e., deviant peer affiliation, being ignored by peers) are strong predictors of adolescent internalizing (INT) and externalizing (EXT) behavior problems, no study has examined the above effects concurrently. Nor have researchers investigated the potential peer relationship differences in the effects of CM types on adolescent behavior problems. Thus, this study aims to examine the independent and combined effects of different types of CM and peer relationships on behavior problems. METH

Topography of behavior problems among children with neurodevelopmental conditions: Profile differences and overlaps.

BACKGROUND: This exploratory proof of principle study examined the extent to which behavior problems represent a functional characteristic that crosses diagnostic boundaries. METHODS: This cross-sectional study pertains to 179 caregivers of children, aged 4-13 years (M = 8.27) with cerebral palsy (n = 77), autism spectrum disorder (n = 58), and global developmental delay/intellectual disability (n = 44). Caregivers completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, which provides a measure of conduct problems, emotional symptoms, hyperactivity-inattention, peer problems, as well as total

Does self-efficacy moderate the effect of gambling advertising on problem gambling behaviors?

Problem gambling causes significant harm to individuals and society. Financial losses from gambling in Australia exceed those anywhere else in the world. Problem gamblers are overrepresented among substance users and rural and remote Australians. Limited research exists on the impact of gambling advertising on problem gambling among those seeking substance use treatment, in rural/remote areas, and protective factors that may guard against these impacts. This study examined whether self-efficacy to control gambling moderated the relationship between the perceived impact of gambling advertising

Behavioral problems may be associated with multilevel lumbosacral stenosis in military working dogs.

Behavioral and spinal problems have been reported to be important causes of early retirement in military working dogs, however studies on possible relationships between these two problems are currently lacking. The aim of this retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study was to test associations between reported behavioral problems and computed tomographic (CT) diagnoses of lumbosacral (LS) stenosis in a sample of military working dogs. Data archives at a tertiary referral military working dog hospital were searched for dogs that had LS CT scans acquired during the period of June 2013-

Outdoor air pollution pregnancy exposures are associated with behavioral problems in China's preschoolers.

There are mounting evidences indicated that maternal exposure to outdoor air pollutants in pregnancy affects children's neural development, but the researches on children's behavioral difficulties are seldom. We explored the association between maternal exposure to outdoor air pollution during different trimesters of pregnancy and the prevalence of behavioral difficulties among 657 preschool children aged 3-4 from three kindergartens in Wuhan, China. This is a cross-sectional study. Children's behavioral difficulties were assessed by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) (reported

Maternal and paternal physical abuse: Unique and joint associations with child behavioral problems.

Although there is a substantial amount of literature documenting the relationship between child abuse and behavioral problems in China, there is, on the other hand, a limited number of studies on the joint and unique associations of maternal and paternal physical abuse with child behaviors within the Chinese context. The present study, using the family systems theory as the theoretical framework, aims to examine these joint and the unique associations of maternal and paternal physical abuse with externalizing and internalizing behaviors among a community sample of Chinese children. Movement Disorders in Adults With Intellectual Disability and Behavioral Problems Associated With Use of Antipsychotics.

BACKGROUND: Antipsychotic drugs are prescribed to approximately 30% to 40% of adults with intellectual disability (ID) and behavioral problems despite lack of evidence of effectiveness and potential adverse effects, including movement disorders. AIMS: The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of movement disorders (dyskinesia, akathisia, dystonia, and parkinsonism) in in-patient adults with mild to borderline ID and behavioral problems associated with use of antipsychotics. METHODS: Prevalence of movement disorders was measured with a standardized protocol. The strength of the asso

A multimethod examination of negative behaviors during couples interactions and problem drinking trajectories.

Models of alcohol use disorder (AUD) are increasingly conceptualizing social and relationship factors as being critical to the understanding of problem drinking. Close relationships involving conflict have been a particular research focus, and partners' expressions of negative emotion are theorized to affect drinking among those with AUD. Although it has long been presumed that behaviors during couples interactions influence drinking-and this assumption has informed many modern treatments for AUD-this hypothesis has not been directly tested. We bring multiple methods to bear on this question,

Emotion regulation as a mediator of the relation between sexual abuse and behavior problems in preschoolers.

Maltreated children show poor emotion regulation competencies compared to non-maltreated children. Emotion regulation has been found to mediate the association between maltreatment and behavior problems in children. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationships among child sexual abuse (CSA), emotion regulation (ER), and internalized and externalized behavior problems in preschoolers using conditional process analyses. ER competencies were assessed in 127 children aged 41-79 months (62 abused, 65 non-abused) by their parents (N=124) and early childhood educators (N=88) using th

Executive dysfunction and the relation with behavioral problems in children with 47,XXY and 47,XXX.

Neuroimaging studies have shown that having an extra X chromosome is associated with abnormal structure and function of brain areas in the frontal lobe, which is crucially involved in executive functioning. However, there is little of knowledge of the type and severity of executive dysfunction, and the impact on emotional and behavioral problems. The present study aims to provide in this. In total, 40 children (23 boys with 47,XXY and 17 girls with 47,XXX) with an extra X chromosome and 100 non-clinical controls (47 boys and 53 girls) participated in the study. The participants were 9-18 years

Girls' childhood trajectories of disruptive behavior predict adjustment problems in early adolescence.

BACKGROUND: It is widely recognized that early onset of disruptive behavior is linked to a variety of detrimental outcomes in males, later in life. In contrast, little is known about the association between girls' childhood trajectories of disruptive behavior and adjustment problems in early adolescence. METHODS: This study used nine waves of data from the ongoing Pittsburgh Girls Study. A semiparametric group-based model was used to identify trajectories of disruptive behavior in 1,513 girls from age 6 to 12 years. Adjustment problems were characterized by depression, self-harm, Post Traumat

Gambling behavior and problems among older adults: a systematic review of empirical studies.

OBJECTIVES: With the rapid aging of the population and the increased availability of gambling facilities over the past three decades, older adults may gamble more and may be increasingly at risk for problem gambling (PG) or pathological gambling disorder (PGD). To facilitate a better understanding of gambling behavior among older adults that will inform preventive strategies, this article systematically examined empirical studies on issues related to older adults' gambling. METHOD: This article reviewed 75 empirical studies including data on the distribution and determinants of PG and PGD and

Infant temperament and high-risk environment relate to behavior problems and language in toddlers.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the role that easy infant temperament and cumulative environmental risk play in predicting cognitive, language, and behavioral outcomes in 3-year-old children at high social risk. METHODS: Subjects were 412 mother-infant dyads, recruited at birth, participating in a longitudinal study examining the effects of prenatal methamphetamine on child development. This analysis includes a subsample (n = 290) of the study with a completed 3-year visit. Temperament was assessed by the Infant Behavior Questionnaire at 12 months. Factor analysis from well-validated measures

Prenatal exposure to perfluorinated chemicals and behavioral or coordination problems at age 7 years.

OBJECTIVE: Potential neurotoxic effects of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) have been reported in highly exposed animals, but whether these chemicals are neurotoxic in humans is not known. We therefore investigated whether prenatal exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or perfluorooctane sulfate (PFOS), two of the most prevalent PFCs, are associated with behavioral or coordination problems in early childhood. METHODS: We used data from the Danish National Birth Cohort, which enrolled mothers in early pregnancy, and we measured maternal blood levels of PFOA and PFOS using specimens drawn ar

Vestibular pathology presenting as behavioral problems in a child with Down Syndrome: a case report.

Here we present a case of superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) in a non-verbal 17-year-old male patient with trisomy 21 that presented with behavioral problems, instead of the more typical symptoms of episodic noise-induced vertigo. SSCD syndrome is characterized by sound-, or pressure-induced vertigo. Patients often complain of vertigo or oscillopsia evoked by loud noises, which may be either external sounds or those elicited by the patients themselves when they are speaking. In cases of SSCD, auditory testing will typically reveal a conductive hearing loss on the affected side while
