BACKGROUND: In HTLV-1-associated malignant disease, adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATLL), the interaction of virus and host was evaluated at the chemokines gene expression level. Also, IL-1β and Caspase-1 expressions were evaluated to investigate the importance of pyroptosis in disease development and progression.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The expression of host CCR6 and CXCR-3 and the HTLV-1 proviral load (PVL), Tax, and HBZ were assessed in 17 HTLV-1 asymptomatic carriers (ACs) and 12 ATLL patients using the reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), TaqMan method.

BACKGROUND: There is currently no commercially available method in Canada to identify bovine leukemia virus (BLV)-positive cows with high proviral load (PVL).
OBJECTIVES: First, develop a model to predict PVL using common, commercially available, cost-effective diagnostic tests. Second, investigate the relationship between lymphocyte count and PVL in BLV-positive cows.
ANIMALS: A total of 339 BLV-positive and 62 BLV-seronegative cows on 15 dairy farms.

We evaluated the HIV-1 reservoir in people with four-class drug-resistant (4DR) virus compared with those without drug resistance. Using the intact proviral DNA assay, we found that both groups had similar levels of intact HIV-1 DNA, suggesting that multidrug-resistant HIV does not significantly alter the size of the reservoir. These findings are a first step in studying the HIV-1 reservoir in the population with multidrug-resistant virus, and further studies are needed to confirm our results.

As part of epidemiologic studies of human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-I-associated malignancies in Jamaica, the authors evaluated 26 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for the presence of integrated HTLV-I provirus in their malignant cells.
