Using a new protocol with varied exposure increments, we found that, in 18 of 20 patients with psoriasis vulgaris who were given ultraviolet (UV)-B phototherapy three times a week, the disease completely cleared. One patient's condition substantially improved, and one patient's condition failed to respond. Ten to 38 treatments were required during a three- to 13-week period. Antireticulin antibodies were studied in the sera of 32 patients affected by various clinical forms of psoriasis. The indirect immunofluorescence method was used on histological sections of human kidney and mouse liver and kidney. This method was also used with sera from children with coeliac disease and from healthy controls. In 10 these antibodies were positive, while in 22 they were negative, the intensity of the titres varying with the extent of the disease. These results support the notion that immunological phenomena may be involved in the physiopathological mechanisms of psoriasis.

Twenty-six outpatients with chronic plaque-type psoriasis vulgaris were treated five times weekly with topically applied white petrolatum and subsequent exposure to erythemogenic doses of ultraviolet radiation from fluorescent bulbs with a wavelength of 280 to 400 nm. All patients were cleared of psoriasis in ultraviolet-exposed sites in an average of 27 treatments. The combination of topically applied white petrolatum and ultraviolet radiation provides a convenient, cosmetically acceptable outpatient therapy for psoriasis.

The case report presented herein documents the unusual simulaneous occurrence of psoriasis and tinea corporis in a patient and reviews the diagnostic and therapeutic problems that arose during the treatment of these two morphologically similar papulosquamous diseases. The report emphasizes the need for careful re-evaluation of patients who have atypical response to therapy.

Presented in this series were seven men and three women. Ages when seen, ranged from 32 to 68 years (average 54). Psoriasis had begun in childhood in the women and in the late 20's and 30's in the men. Arthritis (ankylosing spondylitis) was present in only one. In 100 consecutive patients admitted to the hospital for control of severe psoriasis, 25 had radiologic changes characteristic of psoriatic arthritis. Twenty had erosions and mild sclerosis around the sacroiliac joint; in eight of these, asymptomatic sacroiliac changes were the sole manifestation of musculoskeletal disease. Twelve had vertebral syndesmophytes, 11 had terminal interphalangeal joint changes, and 10 had peripheral joint involvement.
