Psychometric delineation of the most discriminant symptoms of depressive mixed states.

Recent studies have shown that depressive mixed state (DMX), i.e., a major depressive episode (MDE) plus 3 or more intra-MDE hypomanic symptoms, is prevalent in bipolar-II disorder (BP-II) and not uncommon in major depressive disorder (MDD) outpatients. The main aim of the present analyses was to find the most discriminant intra-MDE hypomanic signs and symptoms predicting depressive mixed state. Consecutive 602 MDE outpatients (348 BP-II, 254 MDD) were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, the Hypomania Interview Guide, and the Family History Screen, by a senior psychi

The psychometric properties of the Interpersonal Sensitivity Measure in social anxiety disorder.

The Interpersonal Sensitivity Measure (IPSM) was developed to assess hypersensitivity to interpersonal rejection, a suggested trait of depression-prone personality (Aust NZ J Psychiatry 23 (1989) 341). Although studies of the IPSM and interpersonal rejection sensitivity have primarily been conducted in depressed populations, it is important to investigate interpersonal rejection sensitivity as a relevant construct in the assessment of social anxiety. This study examined the psychometric properties of the IPSM in treatment-seeking individuals with social anxiety disorder. The results of this in

The role of psychometric testing and psychological treatment in tension-type headache.

Tension-type headaches are a common occurrence for many people. Psychological issues such as stress, depression, and anxiety have been shown to coexist with tension-type headaches. The relationship between psychological factors and headaches is supported by literature, and treatments that combine a pharmacologic and psychological approach address the needs of the whole person. In this article, the role of psychometric testing and the application of psychological interventions for use on patients with tension-type headaches are reviewed. Recommendations are made about approaches that are design

Psychometric properties of the schedules for clinical assessment in neuropsychiatry (SCAN-2.1).

BACKGROUND: The Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN), the successor of the ninth version of the Present State Examination (PSE-9), is one of the latest instruments developed by the World Health Organisation for the assessment of psychiatric disorders. So far, the psychometric properties have only been established for certain sections of the instrument. The present study is the first to test the psychometric properties of SCAN-2.1 for most of the disorders covered by the SCAN, and was carried out prior to a survey conducted in the Nijmegen Health Area (the Netherlands).

The development and psychometric characteristics of the Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire (SDQ-20).

According to 19th century French psychiatry and contemporary clinical observations, dissociation pertains to both psychological and somatoform components of experience, reactions, and functions. Because such an instrument was lacking, we aimed to develop a self-reporting questionnaire measuring what we propose to call somatoform dissociation. Patients with dissociate disorder and with other DSM-IV psychiatric diagnoses completed a list of 75 items that, according to clinical experience and expert judgment, could reflect instances of somatoform dissociation. Separate logistic analyses and deter

Psychometric characteristics of the MMPI-2 Cook-Medley Hostility scale.

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI; Hathaway & McKinley, 1943) Cook-Medley Hostility scale (Ho) has been studied a great deal because of its relation to coronary disease and mortality. However, little research has been conducted with the Ho scale on the revised MMPI (MMPI-2; Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989). This study examined the psychometric characteristics of the MMPI-2 Ho scale. Only nine of the original 50 Ho items were slightly changed in the revision. Ho scores were highly correlated with MMPI-2 scales CYN, K, TPA, and ASP, supporting the interp

Some clinical and psychometric characteristics of primary and secondary premature ejaculators.

Patients with premature ejaculation (PE) were subdivided into primary (PPE), individuals who had suffered from PE since the beginning of their sexual lives, and secondary (SPE), those who developed the condition after years of satisfactory sexual functioning. PPEs differed from SPEs on a number of clinical and psychometric variables. Clinically SPEs were significantly more likely to manifest a coexisting erectile disorder, reduction in sex drive, and a decrease in arousal during sexual stimulation than SPEs. They were significantly less likely to report high levels of anxiety during coitus. Ps

[Psychometric speech studies in Alzheimer's dementia with the Aachen aphasia test].

Dementias of the Alzheimer type seem to be frequently accompanied by language disturbances. These may represent a feature which can be of help in distinguishing them from other types of dementias. We used the Aachen aphasia test in 32 patients suffering from Alzheimer dementia according to research criteria, and a mixed sample of 35 patients suffering from other dementias. From these 2 groups 2 subsamples of 21 patients each were gathered which were comparable with regard to age, disease onset, level of education, verbal intelligence and severity of senility. Nevertheless it was possible to di

Neurasthenic complaints and psychometric function of toluene-exposed rotogravure printers.

In 1985, 30 rotogravure printers exposed to toluene for 4-43 years (median 29) were examined by means of interviews and psychometric testing. They were 33-61 years of age (mean 50). Comparisons were made with a reference group of 72 men aged 27-69 (mean 47). The referents had never been exposed to solvents and were all in good health. The printers were employed by two Swedish companies. The mean exposure levels were 43 and 157 mg/m3 of toluene, respectively, at the two printing shops. Before 1980 the exposure levels had exceeded 300 mg/m3. On Monday mornings, before psychometric testing at the

Psychometric ante-natal predictors of post-natal depressed mood.

One hundred and nine women were studied during the course of pregnancy in an attempt to predict which of them would later rate themselves as suffering from depressed mood up to twelve months post-natally. The psychometric measures used comprised the Zung Self-Rating Scale to measure depression, the DSSI/SAD sub-scale to measure anxiety and the Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire. Post-natal depression observed up to twelve months post-partum was positively associated with first trimester ante-natal scores on all three measures. The HDHQ and the DSSI/SAD measures were good predic

A Comparative Study of the Psychometrics and Feasibility of Artificial Intelligence Algorithms Versus the Standard Screening Methods for Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in Older Adults: A Scoping Review.

Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) is highly prevalent (35.6%-47.4%) in hospitalized older patients but clinical screening is slow and labor-intensive, leading to an 80% underdiagnosis. The aim of this study was to describe and compare the psychometrics and feasibility of current OD clinical screening methods versus artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for OD. A scoping review was performed using PubMed Central and Web of Science databases (January 2009-August 2025), focusing on psychometric data for OD screening methods in older adults (>65 years) and comparing them with AI-based tests, includin…

Assessing appearance-related disturbances in HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM): psychometrics of the body change and distress questionnaire-short form (ABCD-SF).

Appearance-related disturbances are common among HIV-infected MSM; however, to date, there have been limited options in the valid assessment of this construct. The aim of the current study was to assess the structural, internal, and convergent validity of the assessment of body change distress questionnaire (ABCD) and its short version. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses indicated that both versions fit the data well. Four subfactors were revealed measuring the following body disturbance constructs: (1) negative affect about appearance, (2) HIV health-related outcomes and stigma, (3)

Adolescent dating violence measurement and psychometric terminology: a bibliometric review.

Adolescent dating violence is a multidimensional public health problem encompassing physical, sexual, psychological, relational, coercive, stalking, and technology-facilitated behaviors within current or former dating relationships. As prevalence estimates, risk profiles, prevention priorities, and clinical decisions depend on how the construct is defined and operationalized, the organization of the measurement literature warrants systematic mapping. This bibliometric review mapped scientific production at the intersection of adolescent dating violence and measurement or psychometric terminolo

Development and psychometric testing of the urostomy peristomal skin symptom questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE: While current assessment tools for peristomal skin complications (PSCs) provide valuable assessment of clinician-observed signs, a comprehensive understanding of the condition requires the integration of the patient's perspective on their symptom experience. This study aimed to develop and validate the Urostomy Peristomal Skin Symptom Questionnaire (UPSS), a novel patient-reported outcome measure designed to comprehensively assess the symptom experience in urostomy patients. METHODS: Following established methodological standards, this study was conducted in three sequential phases

Psychometric evaluation of the GHQ-28 in a South African recidivist sample.

This study evaluated the psychometric performance of the 28-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) in an archived South African recidivist sample. Data from 385 respondents were examined using item descriptives, corrected item-total correlations, confirmatory factor analysis, internal-consistency estimates, exploratory network analysis, and post hoc reduced-item sensitivity models; the network analysis used 327 complete cases. Among the full-scale models, the correlated four-factor model showed the best relative fit, chi-square(344) = 543.81, CFI = .944, TLI = .939, RMSEA = .042, and SRMR

A network psychometric evaluation of the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire - III and PsyFlex.

Psychological flexibility and inflexibility are core processes in the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model and are consistently associated with well-being and emotional distress. However, the validity of widely used measures, particularly the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire - II (AAQ-II), has been questioned due to potential overlap with indicators of distress and neuroticism. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire - III (AAQ-III) and the PsyFlex in a general population sample from Colombia (N = 785) using network psychometrics. …
