Bruxism is an abnormal repetitive movement disorder characterized by jaw clenching and tooth gnashing or grinding. It is classified into two overlapping types: awake bruxism (AB) and sleep bruxism (SB). Theories on factors causing bruxism are a matter of controversy, but a line of evidence suggests that it may to some extent be linked to basal ganglia dysfunction although so far, this topic has received little attention. The purpose of this article was to review cases of bruxism reported in various movement disorders. The biomedical literature was searched for publications reporting the associ

Harlequin ichthyosis is the most severe congenital keratinizing disorder. It is caused by mutations in the ABCA12 gene leading to defective lipid transport. The infants are born with ectropion, eclabium and fissured plate-like skin. Today these infants can survive with neonatal intensive care and retinoid therapy and need long-term interdisciplinary treatment in order to improve quality of life. However, the outcome in our case is impaired by severe psychomotor developmental delay, which has not yet been associated with Harlequin Ichthyosis.

Cardiofaciocutaneous (CFC) syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by psychomotor and growth retardation, a typical facial dysmorphism, congenital heart defects, and ectodermal abnormalities. Pulmonic stenosis, atrial and ventricular septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are cardiac findings identified in patients with this syndrome; however, tetralogy of Fallot has never been associated with CFC syndrome. CFC should be considered in patients with skin abnormalities in addition to phenotypic features and a congenital heart defect, including tetralogy of Fa

Joubert syndrome is a rare disorder, characterized by hypoplasia, or aplasia of the cerebellar vermis, hypotonia, ataxia, and psychomotor retardation. The molecular basis underlying the disease is still unknown. There are various syndromes, which are associated with malignancies. Previously known associations between Joubert syndrome and tumors, are benign soft tissue tumors of the tongue and laryngeal lymphangioma. This report describes a 17-year-old boy known with Joubert syndrome, who was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma. The boy received chemotherapy, which successfully induced complete rem

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar ataxia, mental retardation, and disequilibrium syndrome type 4 (CAMRQ4) is a rare autosomal recessive neurological disorder caused by biallelic variants in the ATP8A2 gene. It is characterized by severe psychomotor impairment, hypotonia or spasticity, and intellectual disability. Despite increasing case reports, the full phenotypic spectrum remain incompletely defined.
METHODS: We report the case of a 7-year-old girl born to consanguineous parents, presenting with severe psychomotor delay, quadriplegia, and craniofacial dysmorphisms. Whole exome sequencing identified a

Pontocerebellar hypoplasia (PCH) is an autosomal recessive neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cerebellar and pontine hypoplasia, progressive microcephaly, and developmental delay. Ten types of PCH have been described; PCH type 2A (PCH2A) due to a mutation in TSEN54 is the most frequent. Seizures have been reported in the large majority of patients. The probability of epilepsy developing increases with age, along with difficulties in differentiating seizures from dyskinetic movements. The aim of the present report was to describe the clinical symptoms and electro

OBJECTIVES: Although major depression is characteristic of both bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, there is disagreement as to whether there are distinct features of depression that differentiate these two conditions. The primary aim of this study was to use methods based in item response theory to evaluate differences in DSM-IV depression symptom endorsement in an epidemiological sample of individuals with a history of mania (i.e., bipolar depression) versus those without (i.e., unipolar depression).
METHODS: Clinical interview data were drawn from a subsample (n = 13,058) of in

PURPOSE: The diagnostic validity of agitated depression (AD, a major depressive episode (MDE) with psychomotor agitation) is unclear. It is not classified in DSM-IV and ICD-10 classification of mental and behavioural disorder (ICD-10). Some data support its subtyping. This study aims to test the subtyping of AD.
METHODS: Consecutive 245 bipolar-II (BP-II) and 189 major depressive disorder (MDD) non-tertiary-care MDE outpatients were interviewed (off psychoactive drugs) with Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders--Clinician Version (SCID-CV), Hypomania Interview Guide (HIGH-

Iron (Fe) is a necessary trace element in numerous pathways of human metabolism. Therefore, Fe deficiency is capable of causing multiple health problems. Apart from the well-known microcytic anemia, lack of Fe can cause severe psychomotor disorders in children, pregnant women, and adults in general. Iron deficiency is a global health issue, mainly caused by dietary deficiency but aggravated by inflammatory conditions. The challenges related to this deficiency need to be addressed on national and international levels. This review aims to summarize briefly the disease burden caused by Fe deficie…

The occurrence of mosaic ring chromosome 13 is rare. The mechanism of ring chromosome formation is usually associated with loss of genetic material. We report 2 cases of mosaic ring chromosome 13, resulting in deletion of 13qter. The first patient, a 15 year-old boy, presented a delayed psychomotor development, mental retardation, dysmorphic features and bleeding disorders associated with a de novo terminal 13q34 deletion. The second case was a foetus of 31 weeks with prenatal diagnosis of severe malformation such as holoprosencephaly, congenital cardiac defects, gastro-intestinal abnormalitie

A review of the literature was made concerning the perinatal complications of children conceived through assisted reproduction technology. The main complications were due to the high frequency of multiple gestation and prematurity. There is convicting data for a twofold increase of the frequency of congenital malformations: neural tube defects, intestinal atresia and hypospadias. Chromosomal disorders are more frequent when Intracytoplasmic spermal injection is used. There is no evidence of increased risk of tumors. The psychomotor and intellectual development of the children conceived by assi

Cannabidiol (CBD), a nonpsychoactive cannabinoid of Cannabis, was given to 5 patients with dystonic movement disorders in a preliminary open pilot study. Oral doses of CBD rising from 100 to 600 mg/day over a 6 week period were administered along with standard medication. Dose-related improvement in dystonia was observed in all patients and ranged from 20 to 50%. Side-effects of CBD were mild and included hypotension, dry mouth, psychomotor slowing, lightheadedness, and sedation. In 2 patients with coexisting Parkinsonian features, CBD at doses over 300 mg/day exacerbated the hypokinesia and r

We report the case of an infant with facial dysmorphism, congenital hydrocephalus, severe hypotonia and absence of psychomotor development, with ocular and cerebral malformations consistent with the diagnosis of Walker-Warburg syndrome (WWS). Investigations included a cerebral CT scan indicative of type II lissencephaly and a muscular biopsy which showed findings of muscular dystrophy. The association of hypotonia, developmental delay and seizures with a neuronal migration disturbance and retinal involvement raised the suspicion of a peroxisomal disorder. The pertinent biochemical investigatio

Inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) are a group of genetic disorders characterized by dysfunction of an enzyme or other protein involved in cellular metabolism.(1) Most IEMs involve the nervous system (neuro-metabolic diseases or NMD). NMD often present with a complex clinical picture: psychomotor retardation and/or regression, pyramidal signs, ataxia, hypotonia and epilepsy and movement disorders.(1) Movement disorders are more frequently part of this complex picture than a predominant symptom, however in some instances the clinical picture may be summarized in an invalidating movement disorder

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity between depressive and anxiety disorders is common. From network perspective, mental disorders arise from direct interactions between symptoms and comorbidity is due to direct interactions between depression and anxiety symptoms. The current study investigates the network structure of depression and anxiety symptoms in Chinese female nursing students and identifies the central and bridge symptoms as well as how other symptoms in present network are related to depression symptom "thoughts of death".
METHODS: To understand the full spectrum of depression and anxiety, we

Pemphigus vulgaris is a rare autoimmune bullous dermatosis, and while Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the leading cause of hypothyroidism, their association falls within the spectrum of polyautoimmunity. A 50-year-old female patient with no specific past medical history presented with a four-month history of a clinical picture combining erosive mucocutaneous bullous lesions and significant asthenia. Further history-taking revealed that the patient exhibited significant psychomotor retardation, accompanied by subtle systemic signs (psychomotor slowness, bradycardia, and lower limb edema). A thyroid
