Visual evoked potential (VEP) latency to a sinusoidal grating pattern was measured in each eye of 103 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and compared with results in a control group of 56 patients hospitalized for other neurological conditions. Of the 50 patients classified as having definite MS, 90% showed prolonged latency (over 131 msec) in one or both eyes. In each eye of 24 of the MS patients, psychophysical measurement of the detectability of grating patterns was obtained. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to pattern reversal and psychophysical contrast sensitivity (CS) were tested in five patients with Uhthoff's symptom before and after exercise. Four of the cases were related to a demyelinating disease and one patient had a severe brain injury. Uhthoff's symptom occurred also in neuropathies without previous clinical neuritis and in eyes with normal latency time of the VEPs. PURPOSE: To report the 3-month results of our first cases of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) with Alcon's CustomCornea.
METHODS: Wavefront analysis was performed using the LADARWave aberrometer and ablation was performed with the LADARVision4000 system. Thirty-one eyes of 17 patients were analyzed prospectively, at 1 and 3 months after CustomCornea surgery. Psychophysical tests were performed, including high and low contrast acuity, and contrast sensitivity under scotopic and photopic conditions. In addition, psychometric testing was performed using a subjective vision questionnaire.
