Impaired decision making under ambiguity but not under risk in individuals with pathological buying-behavioral and psychophysiological evidence.

Pathological buying (PB) is described as dysfunctional buying behavior, associated with harmful consequences. It is discussed whether decision-making deficits are related to PB, because affected individuals often choose the short-term rewarding option of buying despite persistent negative long-term consequences. We investigated 30 patients suffering from PB and 30 matched control participants with two different decision-making tasks: the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) measures decisions under ambiguity and involves emotional feedback processing, whereas the Game of Dice Task (GDT) measures decisions

Psychophysiological responses to visceral and somatic pain in functional chest pain identify clinically relevant pain clusters.

BACKGROUND: Despite chronic pain being a feature of functional chest pain (FCP) its experience is variable. The factors responsible for this variability remain unresolved. We aimed to address these knowledge gaps, hypothesizing that the psychophysiological profiles of FCP patients will be distinct from healthy subjects. METHODS: 20 Rome III defined FCP patients (nine males, mean age 38.7 years, range 28-59 years) and 20 healthy age-, sex-, and ethnicity-matched controls (nine males, mean 38.2 years, range 24-49) had anxiety, depression, and personality traits measured. Subjects had sympatheti

Psychophysiological arousal and biased perception of bodily anxiety symptoms in socially anxious children and adolescents: a systematic review.

Cognitive models of social anxiety [Clark and Wells, Social phobia: Diagnosis, assessment, and treatment, Guilford Press, New York, 1995], diagnostic criteria and studies on adult samples suggest that both an overestimation of bodily anxiety symptoms and psychophysiological abnormalities play an important role in social anxiety. To date, less is known about such a perception bias and physiological characteristics in children and adolescents with social anxiety. We performed a systematic review of the literature in the electronic databases Medline, PsycINFO, and PSYNDEX. Additional studies were

[Features of the psychophysiological status of men with different levels of vestibuloautonomic resistance and their interrelation with motion sickness' etiology and pathogenesis].

The results of more than 600 observations of 200 healthy male-volunteers of 23-45 years old including parameters of electroencephalogram, sensorimotor reactions, and questionnaires of Cattell, Strelau and Taylor were analyzed. Division into groups with high, moderate and low vestibuloautonomic resistance (VAR) was done on base of endurance of rotary test with interrupted cumulation of Coriolis accelerations. It is shown, that VAR degree along with distinctions in sensitivity of peripheral compartment of a vestibular analyzer and other sensory systems is appreciably defined by the distinctions

[Psychophysiological mechanisms involved in the affective regulation and food restriction of women at risk of suffering from bulimia nervosa].

The aim of the study was to explore the effect of visualizing food images under different mood states and food restriction conditions on the emotional modulation of two defense reflexes (startle reflex and cardiac defense). 72 women at risk of suffering from bulimia nervosa were assigned to two groups: 1) a group under induced positive, neutral, or negative mood state and, 2) a 6-hour-food-deprived group or a non-deprived group. Second-by-second heart rate and electromyogram activity from the orbiculari oculi region were recorded after the auditory stimulus. The results showed that, while view

[Results of comparative studies of psychophysiological factors essential for self-evaluation of pain during oral therapeutic interventions].

The efficiency of infiltration, conduction, and intraligamental anesthesia with different anesthetics for oral therapeutic interventions was evaluated in 331 patients without concomitant somatic diseases. The levels of reactivity and personal anxiety, as well as the patient's mood have an essential impact on their own appraisal of the quality of analgesia, which the dentist should bear in mind when planning and carrying out anesthesia. Mean and high levels of anxiety are characterized by decreased subjective confidence in the quality of analgesia and can mislead the dentist, if he/she neglects

[Vibrational and coupling characteristics of psychophysiological function rhythms in patients with Fallot's tetralogy before and after correction of the cause].

In 24 patients (aged from 5 to 21 years) afflicted with the tetralogy of Fallot and in 11 healthy subjects of the same age, the authors studied, using correlation and spectrum analysis, the coupling and the vibrational behaviour of modulated oscillations (in a rhythm of ca. 1 min.) of some psychophysiologic functions (heart and respiratory rates, blood pressure, sensomotor reaction times, short-time memory for ten-digit numbers) as expression of the central nervous coordination. The examinations were performed when the individuals were in the lying position, in the erect position and again at

Identifying stress-relevant events in everyday nursing practice using psychophysiological outcomes - an observational multimethod study.

BACKGROUND: Stressful working conditions contribute substantially to nurses' sickness absence and workforce shortages. However, prior research has largely focused on general job demands and resources, providing limited insight into which everyday work events are associated with acute stress responses. This study examined event-related observer-rated and physiological stress indicators during nurses' work using ecological momentary assessment combined with ambulatory heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring. METHODS: A non-interventional, multimethod field study was conducted with nurses from a

Beyond Performance: Cognitive Overload and Related Cognitive, Psychophysiological, and Performance States in Competitive Esports-A Scoping Review.

Background: Competitive esports represents a rapidly developing digital performance environment in which players must regulate attention, affect, psychophysiological activation, and performance under dynamic, high-demand conditions. Although cognitive overload and related states are increasingly relevant to esports research, these constructs have not been consistently defined, operationalized, or measured. Objective: This scoping review aimed to map empirical evidence on cognitive overload and related states in competitive esports, with emphasis on cognitive demands, psychophysiological and ne

Patients with borderline personality disorder show initially reduced psychophysiological relaxation levels but intact relaxation response.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is associated with psychological as well as physiological dysregulation in patients, including reduced parasympathetic activity at baseline and difficulties returning to baseline after a stressor. Whether this impacts the relaxation response independent of a stressor has so far not been investigated. METHODS: In a within-subject design, we compared two relaxation interventions, a virtual reality nature video, and a paced breathing intervention. We assessed a female-only sample, with 20 BPD patients (meanage = 23.75 ± 4.39) during their inpat

Effects of Simulated Short-Haul Flights on Sport-Specific Performance, Sleep, and Psychophysiological Responses in Football Players.

The effects of two short-haul air travel (SHAT) of different durations on sport-specific performance, sleep, and psychophysiological indices in highly trained football players were examined. Nineteen participants completed, in a randomized order, two simulated SHAT, 1 week apart, each lasting 4 h and 2 h, followed by a control condition (CON). Generic (10-m sprint, repeated sprint ability; RSA, countermovement jump; CMJ), sport-specific performance (Hoff Test, Loughborough Soccer Passing Test; LSPT), and psychophysiological responses (sleep, heart rate variability [HRV], salivary cortisol and

The short-term relation between load and acute psychophysiological responses in football: a meta-analysis and methodological considerations.

Relations between load and acute psychophysiological responses have been widely studied in football. However, due to the large heterogeneity in contexts, operationalization, and results, the direction and strength of these relations remain unclear. In this meta-analysis, we examine the relation between load and typical acute (i.e. within one week) responses - wellbeing, recovery, and heart rate measures - in football players from all football codes (soccer, rugby, futsal, American football, and Australian rules football). We consulted PubMed, Web of Science, and CINAHL up to the 19th of June 2

Healthy versus unhealthy comfort eating for psychophysiological stress recovery in low-income Black and Latinx adults.

Low-income Black and Latinx individuals are disproportionately vulnerable to chronic stress and metabolic disease. Evidence suggests that these populations engage in elevated levels of comfort eating (i.e., eating comforting food to alleviate stress), which can harm diet quality. For this reason, many interventions discourage comfort eating. However, if comfort eating does indeed buffer stress, it may be a protective health behavior, particularly if healthy foods (e.g., strawberries) buffer stress as effectively as traditional unhealthy comfort foods (e.g., brownies). By choosing healthy foods

Emotional reactivity and expressivity in young children with sex chromosome trisomies: evidence from psychophysiological and observational data.

Although sex chromosomal trisomies (SCT) in children are highly prevalent and associated with an increased risk for neurodevelopmental difficulties including socio-emotional problems, little is known about underlying mechanisms that could drive this risk. Studying emotional reactivity and expressivity of young children with SCT in early childhood could identify deviations in early emotional development and potentially serve as risk markers to guide clinical care in developing interventions. Participants in the current study were 90 SCT children and 97 population-based controls, aged 1 to 7 yea

Psychophysiological responses to potentially annoying heating, ventilation, and air conditioning noise during mentally demanding work.

Exposure to noise-or unwanted sound-is considered a major public health issue in the United States and internationally. Previous work has shown that even acute noise exposure can influence physiological response in humans and that individuals differ markedly in their susceptibility to noise. Recent research also suggests that specific acoustic properties of noise may have distinct effects on human physiological response. Much of the existing research on physiological response to noise consists of laboratory studies using very simple acoustic stimuli-like white noise or tone bursts-or field stu

Callous-unemotional traits and fearlessness: A cardiovascular psychophysiological perspective in two adolescent samples using virtual reality.

There has been a longstanding debate about the link between callous-unemotional traits and fearlessness. However, biological evidence for a relationship in adolescents is lacking. Using two adolescent samples, we measured emotional reactivity and cardiac measures of sympathetic (pre-ejection period) and parasympathetic (respiratory sinus arrhythmia) reactivity during 3D TV and virtual reality fear induction. Study 1 included 62 community adolescents from a stratified sample. Study 2 included 60 adolescents from Emotional and Behavioral Difficulties schools. Results were consistent across both
