Evaluation of the Effect of Surgery on Psychosocial Function and Quality of Life in Children with Simple Congenital Ptosis and Their Parents.

PURPOSE: Worldwide, limited information is available on the psychosocial function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children with congenital ptosis, nor the effect of corrective surgery on these parameters. This study aimed to evaluate the social anxiety and HRQoL of Malaysian children with primary simple unilateral congenital ptosis following ptosis surgery. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted among children with primary simple unilateral congenital ptosis and their parent/guardian who attended three tertiary hospitals from 2022 to 2024. The patients and their paren

Psychosocial predictors of change in sexual activity and sexual function after hysterectomy in women with pelvic pain.

BACKGROUND: Potential impact on sexual function is an often-cited concern for many patients considering hysterectomy. The existing literature indicates that sexual function remains stable to slightly improved for most patients who undergo hysterectomy, but most studies demonstrate a small subset of patients in whom sexual function declines after surgery. Unfortunately, there is a lack of clarity as to surgical, clinical, and psychosocial factors that may influence the likelihood of sexual activity after surgery or the magnitude and direction of change in sexual function. Although psychosocial

Unbiased Screening Identifies Functional Differences in NK Cells After Early Life Psychosocial Stress.

Early Life Adversity (ELA) is closely associated with the risk for developing diseases later in life, such as autoimmune diseases, type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In humans, early parental separation, physical and sexual abuse or low social-economic status during childhood are known to have great impact on brain development, in the hormonal system and immune responses. Maternal deprivation (MD) is the closest animal model available to the human situation. This paradigm induces long lasting behavioral effects, causes changes in the HPA axis and affects the immune system. However, t

Psychological training to improve psychosocial function in patients with major depressive disorder: A randomised clinical trial.

Cognitive and emotional remediation training for depression (CERT-D): a randomised controlled trial to improve cognitive, emotional and func … cial-cognition. Our findings demonstrate the efficacy of multi-domain cognitive training to improve psychosocial functioning in individuals with MDD. We suggest that the present treatment could be deployed at a lower cost and with minimal training in comparison to established psychological therapies.

Long-Term Effect of Multiple Operations on Psychosocial Function in Teenage Cleft Lip and Palate Patients.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate patients undergo a significant number of interventions during their childhood and adolescence. Although the intention of such interventions is to improve psychosocial functioning, there exists a paucity of data on the psychosocial outcomes of the burden of care on cleft children. In this work, the long-term effects of quantity and timing of childhood operations on teenagers with cleft lip and palate were evaluated. METHODS: Cleft lip and palate patients (aged 14 to 17 years; n = 55) and an age-matched unaffected cohort (n = 14) prospectively enrolled from two …

IMPROVEMENTS IN PSYCHOSOCIAL FUNCTIONING AND HEALTH-RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE FOLLOWING EXERCISE AUGMENTATION IN PATIENTS WITH TREATMENT RESPONSE BUT NONREMITTED MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER: RESULTS FROM THE TREAD STUDY.

BACKGROUND: Functional impairments often remain despite symptomatic improvement with antidepressant treatment, supporting the need for novel treatment approaches. The present study examined the extent to which exercise augmentation improved several domains of psychosocial functioning and quality of life (QoL) among depressed participants. METHODS: Data were collected from 122 partial responders to antidepressant medication. Participants were randomized to either high- (16 kcal/kg of weight/week [KKW]) or low-dose (4-KKW) exercise. Participants completed a combination of supervised and home-ba…

Longitudinal changes in postoperative physical activity are associated with psychosocial and functional recovery after hip fracture surgery.

BackgroundPhysical activity is markedly reduced after hip fracture surgery, but the clinical relevance of changes in physical activity during postoperative recovery remains unclear. This study investigated whether the rate of change in physical activity during the 1-4 postoperative weeks was independently associated with clinical outcomes at discharge.MethodsThis prospective observational cohort study included 70 patients after hip fracture surgery. Physical activity was measured using an accelerometer, and the slope of weekly mean physical activity over postoperative weeks 1-4 was calculated

Elucidating psychosocial outcome profiles as a function of aggregate genetic risk for suicide attempt and alcohol use disorder.

Genetic factors contribute to alcohol use disorder (AUD) and suicide attempt (SA) co-occurrence. Whether individuals with high genetic liability to one outcome versus the other, or to both, differ in terms of their risk for other psychosocial outcomes is unexplored. To this end, the authors conducted a cohort study of Swedish individuals born 1965-1985, with follow-up through December 31, 2018. Using deciles of family genetic risk scores (FGRS), a measure of aggregate genetic liability, they characterized individuals as being in a "risk" group with high/low FGRS or a "reference" with median FG

Exploring the Psychosocial Impact and Developing a Quality of Life Scale for Postpalatoplasty and Noncleft Patients With Functional Articulation Disorders.

This study was performed to develop and validate the quality of life scale for postpalatoplasty and noncleft FAD (Functional Articulation Disorder) patients and to survey their quality of life (QoL) status. A mixed-methods scale development process yielded a 20-item instrument. Psychometric properties were evaluated in 128 children (41 postpalatoplasty FAD, 87 noncleft FAD). Speech clarity was assessed in a subset (n=38). The scale demonstrated excellent reliability (Cronbach α=0.963) and validity. Postpalatoplasty FAD patients reported significantly poorer QoL than noncleft FAD patients, with

A comparison of parent-reported and self-reported psychosocial function scores of the PedsQL for children with non-severe burn.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life of paediatric patients after burn injury is often assessed through parents who may score differently to their child. Non-severe burns are the most common type of burn injury in Western Australia, however, despite low severity and high survival rates, they can cause long term physical and psychosocial problems which need to be detected early in order to provide patients with optimal holistic care. METHODS: Demographic and clinical data were collected from paediatric patients (5-16-year-old) with non-severe burns (<20% total body surface area), and Paediatric quality
