Predicting depression in middle-aged adults using kidney deficiency questionnaire: an exploratory machine learning study.

In Korean medicine (KM), kidney deficiency represents age-related physiological decline theoretically linked to depression. However, its empirical predictive value in modern clinical frameworks remains underexplored. This study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning model predicting depression in middle-aged adults by integrating kidney deficiency with psychosocial variables. We analyzed baseline data from 1000 community-dwelling adults aged 50-65 from the Korean Medicine for Aging Cohort study. Depression was defined using the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form (GDS-SF-K ≥ 5). Pr

Wearable Biosensing and Machine Learning for Data-Driven Training and Coaching Support.

Background: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are increasingly integrated into sport and exercise through wearable biosensing systems that enable continuous monitoring and data-driven training adaptation. However, their practical value for coaching depends on the validity of biosensor data, the robustness of analytical models, and the conditions under which these systems have been empirically evaluated. Methods: A structured narrative review was conducted using Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar (2010-2026), synthesising empirical and applied evidence on we

Dermatological impacts of urological cancer treatments.

Urological cancers-including prostate, bladder, renal, and testicular cancers-are commonly treated with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. While these therapies improve survival outcomes, they often induce significant dermatological side effects that impair patients' quality of life and treatment adherence. This review synthesizes current literature on the prevalence, mechanisms, and psychosocial consequences of dermatological toxicities associated with urological cancer treatments. Common adverse effects include dermatitis, alopecia, photosensitivity, hyperpigmentati

Preliminary findings on the experiences of care for parents who suffered perinatal bereavement during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic poses an unprecedented risk to the global population. Maternity care in the UK was subject to many iterations of guidance on how best to reconfigure services to keep women, their families and babies, and healthcare professionals safe. Parents who experience a pregnancy loss or perinatal death require particular care and support. PUDDLES is an international collaboration investigating the experiences of recently bereaved parents who suffered a late miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death during the global COVID-19 pandemic, in seven countries. In this study,

The need for additional mental health support for women in the postpartum period in the times of epidemic crisis.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study aimed to identify possible intensification of mental health difficulties among women seeking support in the postpartum period during the epidemic state in Poland. We assumed that the epidemic crisis, social isolation, and restrictions in hospitals which affect pregnant and postpartum women - lack of family labors, lack of the possibility to be with the newborn when he/she is hospitalized, may increase fear and reduce psychosocial resources of women, hinder their normal process of transition to motherhood and thus contribute to the intensified severity of de

Understanding Relapse in Bipolar Disorder at a Tertiary Mental Health Facility in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic psychiatric condition characterized by recurrent episodes of mania, hypomania, and depression, affecting approximately 1 in 150 adults globally. BD contributes significantly to disability and years of life lost, with a notable prevalence in Africa. The high relapse rates in BD, exacerbated by limited mental health resources and underdiagnosis, highlight the need for targeted interventions. This study explores the factors contributing to relapse among BD patients at Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital, Uganda, a crucial mental health facilit

Intergenerational trauma: A silent contributor to mental health deterioration in Afghanistan.

Multiple theories, including family systems, epigenetics, attachments, and many others, have proposed mechanisms for trauma transmission from generation to generation. Intergenerational trauma is today one of the most important psychosocial issues affecting Afghans' mental health and psychology, with the potential to affect subsequent generations. A variety of factors have impacted the mental health of the Afghan population over the years, including years of conflict, socioeconomic instability, natural disasters, chronic drought conditions, economic turmoil, and food insecurity, all of which h

[Alcoholism: relapse prevention].

Prevention of alcoholism relapse implies an early detection of the problem (abuse or dependence). This can be achieved through clinical interview, biological evaluation, psychological assessment (i.e. "The Drinking Habits"--I. Pelc) or according to the "Alcoholism Decision Tree" (The Plinius Maior Society). In order to prevent alcoholism relapse, strategies to control the clinical symptoms related to the "Post-Detoxification Syndrome" have recently been highlighted. Further are discussed the benefit of various psychotherapeutic modalities as well as psychopharmacological interventions. Accordi

Community-based care of individuals with schizophrenia. Combining psychosocial and pharmacologic therapies.

The treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with schizophrenia has undergone rapid change during the past decade. We now accept that individuals with this illness are able to regain a modest degree of social and occupational functioning if optimal care is provided. To design and implement such care, we believe that the treatment setting and system, as well as the content of the treatment, are key to success. Treatment systems should ensure that care is provided continuously and without interruption across service settings and should employ a comprehensive array of interventions. The compre

A scoping review of generative AI and digital twins in tackling loneliness during hospital-to-home transitions.

Loneliness is an important psychosocial concern for older adults and may be intensified during the transition from hospital to home, when established routines, professional contact, functional capacity, and social participation can change simultaneously. This scoping review examined how generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), AI-enabled technologies, and digital twins (DTs) have been investigated in relation to loneliness, social connectedness, and psychosocial support for older adults, with particular attention to their relevance to hospital-to-home transitions. Life satisfaction in later life: the role of health, social support, and social exclusion in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Examining the factors affecting life satisfaction among older adults in Türkiye is crucial for both scientific inquiry and social policy development. Population ageing in Türkiye has accelerated in recent years, and the increasing proportion of individuals aged 65 and over has begun to significantly reshape the demographic structure. Life satisfaction is a fundamental public health indicator that predicts disease development, psychosocial health status, mortality risk, and healthcare utilisation. Dynamics unique to Türkiye, such as the transformation of family structures and the gr
