Evaluation of quality of life in children with precocious puberty.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the quality of life of patients with central precocious puberty (CPP) who required treatment and premature thelarche (PT) followed up without treatment and to compare the groups with and without treatment among themselves and with healthy children. DESIGN, PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENT: This study is designed as a case-control study. A total of 193 children including 59 children with CPP, 53 children with PT, 81 healthy children and their parents were included in the study. A questionnaire was applied to evaluate the sociodemographic characteristics that

Presentation and Care for Children with Peripheral Precocious Puberty.

Peripheral precocious puberty (PPP) refers to the early onset of sexual maturation that is independent of central nervous system control. The extensive differential diagnosis includes congenital and acquired causes. Presenting features depend on which class of sex steroids is involved, and diagnosis rests on hormonal and, if indicated, imaging and/or genetic studies. Effective treatment exists for nearly all causes of PPP. Ongoing research will advance our therapeutic armamentarium and understanding of the pathophysiologic basis of these conditions.

Pandemic and precocious puberty - a Google trends study.

BACKGROUND: Recent publications from several countries have reported that more young people (mainly girls) are experiencing precocious puberty (PP)/menarche during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic compared to the past. This variation is attributed to the stress of confinement, lack of exercise, obesity and disturbed sleep patterns. A common feature of the relevant papers, however, is the small number of reported cases of PP. Studies have shown that searches for diseases on the internet also reflect to some extent the epidemiology of these diseases. AIM: To estimate, through internet sear

National survey of referrals for precocious puberty in Germany.

An unusual high number of girls were referred to our paediatric endocrine clinic with suspected precocious puberty (PP) since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. We analysed our data and initiated a survey among German paediatric endocrinologists. At our centre, less than 10 patients were diagnosed of PP annually between 2015 and 2019. This increased to n=23 (2020) and n=30 (2021). A German survey confirmed this observation: Out of 44 centres which completed the questionnaire, 30/44 (68%) reported an increase of PP. Above this, 32/44 (72%) stated an increase in girls diagnosed with 'early n

Dental Age in Precocious and Delayed Puberty Periods.

OBJECTIVES: Precocious puberty indicates quick growth inception and delayed puberty indicates retardation in growth. This study aimed to investigate whether dental development is synchronous with somatic development. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 62 girls and 34 boys with precocious puberty aged 5 to 9, 29 girls with delayed puberty aged 13 to 16, and 43 boys with delayed puberty aged 14 to 17; 169 children (91 girls and 78 boys) with normal development were compared about their dental ages through their panoramic radiographs by using the Demirjian method and skeletal ages from hand-w

Möbius syndrome associated with obesity and precocious puberty.

Möbius syndrome is a neurological disorder involving underdevelopment of the sixth and seventh cranial nerves. Multiple associations have been described including dysfunction of other cranial nerves, limb abnormalities and hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism causing delayed puberty. We present the second reported case of Möbius syndrome associated with obesity and with precocious puberty. These features may be secondary to dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. We highlight the need to consider extraocular symptoms in these patients and for close liaison with physicians in their manageme

Causes, diagnosis, and treatment of central precocious puberty.

Central precocious puberty results from the premature activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. It mimics physiological pubertal development, although at an inappropriate chronological age (before 8 years in girls and 9 years in boys). It can be attributable to cerebral congenital malformations or acquired insults, but the cause in most cases in girls remains unknown. MKRN3 gene defects have been identified in familial disease, with important basic and clinical results. Indeed, genetic analysis of this gene should be included in the routine clinical investigation of familial and i

An update on the genetic causes of central precocious puberty.

Central precocious puberty (CPP) is caused by the premature reactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Genetic, nutritional, and environmental factors play a crucial role in determining pubertal timing. Recently mutations in kisspeptin (KISS1), kisspeptin receptor (KISS1R), and makorin RING finger protein 3 (MKRN3) genes have been identified as genetic causes of CPP. In particular, the MKRN3 gene is known to affect pubertal initiation. The MKRN3 gene is located on chromosome 15q11-q13 in the Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) critical region. MKRN3 deficiency, due to a loss of function

Central Precocious Puberty: Update on Diagnosis and Treatment.

Central precocious puberty (CPP) is characterized by the same biochemical and physical features as normally timed puberty but occurs at an abnormally early age. Most cases of CPP are seen in girls, in whom it is usually idiopathic. In contrast, ~50% of boys with CPP have an identifiable cause. The diagnosis of CPP relies on clinical, biochemical, and radiographic features. Untreated, CPP has the potential to result in early epiphyseal fusion and a significant compromise in adult height. Thus, the main goal of therapy is preservation of height potential. The gold-standard treatment for CPP is g

Precocious puberty as initial presentation in mediastinal tumour.

Numerous disorders can cause precocious puberty in children, and germ cell tumours (GCT) are one of the rare causes . We report two cases of mediastinal malignant GCTs who presented with precocious puberty. Both patients had bulky and advanced disease, were aggressively treated with neo-adjuvant chemotherapy and surgery, and are surviving and free of disease.

[Klinefelter syndrome in a boy with symptoms of precocious puberty].

Klinefelter syndrome is one of the most frequent sex chromosomal aberration. It is usually not recognized before puberty and many patients remain never diagnosed. Delayed puberty and hypergonadotropic hypogonadism are typical in this syndrome. Early diagnosis and therapy with androgens is important for patients. We present case of 8-year old boy with Klinefelter syndrome who was admitted to our department because of precocious puberty.

Psychosocial aspects in girls with idiopathic precocious puberty.

OBJECTIVE: Precocious puberty leads to discrepancies between physical and chronological age. The aim of the present study was to evaluate behavioral patterns and social competences in 34 girls with idiopathic precocious puberty. METHODS: Height, body weight, and BMI were determined, and pubertal development was assessed. The Korean-child behavior checklist (K-CBCL) was completed by parents. RESULTS: 1) Body weight and BMI were significantly higher in precocious puberty group than in the control group. 2) T scores of total social competence and school scales of K-CBCL were significantly highe

Precocious puberty in children: A review of imaging findings.

OBJECTIVES: This review was aimed at determining the imaging findings in patients with precocious puberty. RESULTS: Within a period of 8 years (from 2002 to 2010) there were 53 patients diagnosed with precocious puberty. Out of the 53 patients, 37 had undergone diagnostic imaging to detect the possible organic causes of precocious puberty. Imaging findings were positive in 31 patients and out of that, 3 patients had 2 findings each (34 abnormalities). Of the patients with positive imaging findings, central precocious puberty (gonadotrophin-dependent) was more common (81%; 25/31) and the cause

Precocious puberty produced by an osteolipoma of the tuber cinereum.

Central precocious puberty (CPP) is fairly common in girls. In most girls, the etiology for the CPP is unknown. Among the more rare causes of CPP in girls are central nervous system tumors and hamartomas. Osteolipoma of the tuber cinereum, which is the most commonly diagnosed at autopsy, has been reported as a cause of CPP. We describe an 8-year-old girl with central precocious puberty in whom MRI demonstrated a lesion compatible with osteolipoma. Her symptom was breast development that begun at age 7 years and 9 months. Her case history, laboratory studies and imaging are presented. Her puber

A case of precocious puberty in a setting with limited resources.

Precocious puberty is a rare condition characterized by the development of secondary sexual characteristics before the median age for the sex. It is either gonadotropin dependent also called as central or gonadotropin independent also known as peripheral type. Hypothalamamic Hamartoma is a common cause of the central or precocious puberty due to organic brain lesion. Here we present a two year male who presented us with precocious puberty due to a hypothalamic Hamartoma.
